Hi everyone,

On the interview day, Mr. Goodpaster had mentioned specific dates that require mandatory attendance for accepted students. Does anyone remember these (e.g. orientation, first day of classes, etc)?

Thank you.

Orientation starts August 19, and our white coat ceremony should be August 25th

To any current MU-COM students:

I've always tried to be a few steps ahead of the curve and my curiosity compels me to ask if anyone would be willing to PM me a response to a question I have about the courses students take during the first year. I'm just curious if the books required are listed anywhere? Or if anyone has a copy of the syllabus they were given for the courses during their first semester? I really just want to see how it looks and read the contents of the syllabus and see how the classes are organized. Unless this would have negative ethical implications for some reason since I haven't had my interview yet?

Let me know!

Thank you so much!

You can see the "required" books for a class through the Marian library website (go to the website > choose "medicine/health sciences" in the research box > select medicine). Since they are changing the semester lengths and each class differs a little, you likely wouldn't gain anything from looking over a current syllabus.

Hi everyone! Just a few things and sorry if they have already been answered!! Do we receive an iPad? Also was curious as to if we should be buying materials such as stethoscopes or if it's best to wait? Finally, when do scholarship offers go out? Thank you in advance 🙂

Feel free to PM me, but don't buy any books, unless its the Green Book (I don't actually know the name of it) or First Aid. Most, if not all, are provided through the library/online sources. Syllabi change with each semester/ year including number exams--it's all course dependent. If there's anything specific information you're looking for, let me know.

You will receive an iPad and wait to buy a stethoscope as there is a medical bag with a bunch of stuff that they have you purchase the first week of class. As far as scholarships.....don't get your hopes up. Although, I genuinely don't know if they offer any other than the Indiana Primary Care scholarship (which is a loan if qualifications aren't met).

Should we expect the same number of students being interviewed on Friday as typically seen during other days? I read somewhere that 16-32 students is normal for other days but is this any different for the last day of interviews?

Thanks!

I am in a predicament and I need advice... I live in Indy with my family, and we purchased a house and all. I am currently applying for jobs in the instance I don't get into MU-COM (currently WL), but I am getting offers now outside of the city. Accepting would mean selling the house, having my husband look for jobs in the new city, and making a mess of things while the chance of getting off the waitlist is still there. Contrarily, as he is finishing up law school now and then needing to study for his Bar exam, I cannot be unemployed. I don't know what to do. Is there a way to communicate this with MU-COM?

Thank you all in advance, and good luck to those that have the final interview tomorrow!

Mr. Goodpaster said yesterday that the first time they will officially look at the alternate list will be May 2nd! So hang on tight!

2 years ago, MU-COM pulled 67 people off the alternate list. Last year, that number was only 20. But either way, it’s a good place to be!

I think he’s just curious if anyone received the call yet
Yeah I was basically just wondering if anyone had been pulled off the waitlist. I guess we're just going to have to keep waiting.

Congratulations!!

Thank you! To anyone still on the alternate list, keep on believing! It is not the worst place to be in and many medical school applicants don’t even make it that far in the process!

Don’t lose hope until the first day of classes begins!

Just got pulled off the waitlist but I’m going to withdraw my seat since I was recently accepted somewhere else. Hope it goes to one of you.

I just got my financial aid award on the MUHUB portal, can anyone explain the loan process to me because for the cost of attendance ($74,866), the unsubsidized loan I got will barely cover half of that. What other loans can I take???

Hi chitown,
I would advise reaching out to our assistant director of financial aid and she would be more than happy to speak with you about your options. Also, in your portal is the financial aid presentation from our accepted student day in March. We hope this helps!

Would anybody recommend buying any board prep materials for the Step/COMLEX exams? I've been told that it's helpful to have the study materials on hand to compare what's being covered in class to what needs to be known for boards.

I checked Reddit for this same thing, I can’t find a clear/unanimous answer but other than “First Aid for USMLE”, quite a few people recommended “Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease”. I’d love to hear of any others.

I've done an extensive amount of research on STEP 1 materials. Go ahead and direct message me your email and I can send it your way!

When systems start... sketchy for micro (and pharm if you want), pathoma for path, first aid to skim to focus on the revelant stuff, and a non-UWorld question bank to sharpen your test taking skills.

Edit: some people recommend flash card programs and stuff. I didn’t use it so I can’t speak to that stuff.

@MU COM - how’s the waitlist looking? I was used to getting emails notifying us the day they renewed the list, so does this mean they haven’t looked at it since beginning of May/ don’t need to anymore?

Hi Stagwagon,
There has been movement, but the majority of the acceptances/ deposits were from the beginning of May. We will be sending out an email in the coming weeks to keep everyone up-to-date. Our class is currently full, but, as always, expect to have "summer melt". At this point once someone withdraws their acceptance we will pull one student from the alternate list. This, on a yearly basis, occurs up until the first day of orientation which is August 19 there is still a lot of time to go! 🙂

Looking at COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2-CE first time pass rates posted for the 2018-2019 MU-COM class, there was a big change from the 2017-2018 first time pass rates. Does anyone know if something in particular changed causing this increase?

From my understanding, the 2017-2018 COMLEX level 1 was easier than most. You can look at the NBOME score/percentile converter (here) to get a better idea. For example, a 550 in 2017-2018 was only 48 percentile, but a 550 in 2018-2019 (and all other years) was ~60s. Why the test was presumably easier and Marian scored lower is hard to explain, but if we ignore the fluke year, Marian continues to trend upward in their score. As for why the big jump, I think that's hard to explain as well. Classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022 all seem to be on the same playing field stats wise: ~504 MCAT, ~3.6 overall GPA. Marian would probably tell you that they provided more board prep time, taught well, provided great resources, etc, which would all definitely help. Students would probably tell you they just studied their ass off. Because it's just one data point, I think it's hard to boil the cause down to one specific thing. Your question may be easier to answer when Marian has a few years in the 98 range.

As for COMLEX Level 2CE, I think it just got easier - this is also reflected in the national average increase.

Hoping there still will be some movement. Any updates from anyone?

There's been some movement on the Facebook group. I'll also be withdrawing this week, so there will be at least one spot! Good luck!

Does anyone know if this school uses a grading system (A, B, C, D, or F) or a pass/fail system during pre-clinical years? How about during clinical years?

Thanks!
