Accepted! Loved my day at UF

Right? I hadn’t seriously considered Florida because I got one of my top choices early in the cycle (and I ran out of interview money). I’m so glad I interviewed cos I was very impressed at the interview and had such a great time. I’m most likely gonna enroll at UF.

Can you share why? I have an interview coming up. Thanks

People: Everyone was warm and truely excited to be there. I thought one of my interviewers was very harsh, but she warmed up and smiled toward the end I realized she was just testing me. My student host was so helpful. She even drove me by the school the night before so I could get a drop pin the GPS it the next day. Lunch with the current students was fun. We even talked about horses and they were not trying to hard sell the school. When I got lost, people were more than willing to walk me to where I needed to go.

Program and Opportunities: The student run clinic is staffed by everyone, not just first years. So I’d get to volunteer past my first year. Research and shadowing opportunities in the pediatric allergy field is abundant. There is a center for pediatric rheumatology, allergy, and immunology at UF. Shrands is a Level 1 trauma center and they also get diseases or conditions hospitals around the area can’t treat because those patients get sent to Shrands. I don’t remember much about how classes and blocks are, but a big part of UFCOM’s philosophy is about showing patients that you care. I believe I can learn the material at any school, but UF will make me a physician who is able to consider a patient holistically and address their needs.

People/ program: there is a collaborative atmosphere at UF. Many schools say they do, but this time I buy it. There are very good pooled resources where everyone contributes. Anatomy is peer taught and you help one another when your group is the “expert” on a system. most schools have a house system, but UF does the big/little thing so you automatically have someone who’d be willing to answer your questions about the school or program. And you can pay if forward later.

University: best in Florida and a top public school. If you have the Step scores, no one “should” ding you for choosing your state school over an expensive private school.

Others:

Cost: I’m in-state for Florida. I could go to a private school, maybe a bit more prestigious, but unless they are offering me a decent scholarship, Florida is a better choice.

Town: Gainesville is affordable and has a circus center. And I like the weather. I believe my dog will be happy about the absence of snow too.

Mic drop. Lol

Wow thanks so much! Cost is a big consideration

Amen to this. I'm going back and forth between UF and another much more expensive school I got accepted to. Don't have financial aid offers from either, but even at full CoA UF will be a great option.

Can anyone speak to the financial aid (merit) UF typically offers? I keep hearing it’s pretty insignificant but are we talking basically nonexistent or everyone gets something kind of deal

Not sure about grad school merit/aid/scholarships, but the school itself is very conservative about giving out money. Undergrads never get scholarships, aid sometimes but scholarships are almost nonexistent. Not sure if it’s the same for grad though.

Does anyone remember when we could inquire about our position on the waitlist? or what the mentioned about the WL during the interviews?

I'm a third year here and all of this is super accurate. Classes are basic science in the first semester (genetics, histology, cell bio, some others i can't remember because #thirdyear) and then organ systems after that.

For people who are gonna have roommates, do you mind if your roommate has a firearm? Should he/she let you know before you sign the lease?

Has anyone received scholarship offers/does anyone know when they'll go out? The financial aid person wasn't there on my interview day so we just got the basics

I missed it because it took me forever to walk back after my last interview. It also went long. And I was in heels.

As far as I know, it'll be given around second look!

Does anyone know if we need to RSVP for second look/if that form has gone out? Sorry if I missed it somewhere on this thread!

Have fun, guys. I wish I could go to 2nd look. $$$, or rather the lack of.

Would also like to know this...
Some threads say little to no movement.

I saw in the 2015-16 thread that someone called the admin office and they said they do pick out about a dozen from the waitlist, from about May to June.

Given they don’t reject and only waitlist, with about a 60% acceptance rate post-II, there will be roughly 200 people on the waitlist. So basically there’s a 5% chance, give or take, of getting off the waitlist.

Not horrible but bleak. Who knows though, this isn’t good data and the traffic rules changed this year

I got a swag bag from UF. I see what you’re doing there, UF! I so need to go here now!!!

Second look is not required for accepted applicants right? Also do we have to check the first option on the portal on April 30th or if we're still on a waitlist can we accept the second/third?

Thanks

Is UF using the AMCAS Choose Your Medical School tool? I know they have their own tool on the secondary portal, but I just want to make sure that I shouldn't be seeing a UF option on AMCAS.

You should see UF on there. If you've been admitted very recently though it might not show up yet
