2018-2019 University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Probably more of an individual based decision as people will have signed leases for the year and have to figure out changing their loans etc. This process is a mess
Can you even leave unecom to go to another school if you get off the waitlist after starting classes?

Given that MD programs have barely started significant movement due to the new traffic guidelines, I would think that there are a number of students currently committed to UNE who are waiting to see if they are accepted to an MD program. Unfortunately, with the new guidelines, most of the dates are set for July 15th or so which is after UNE will have started classes...
Isn’t the date April 30 where you can’t hold multiple acceptances? Why July 15?

Turns out that with the new rules April 30th was more of a soft deadline set by AAMC but that schools are not readily enforcing. Many students have selected “plan to enroll” instead of “commit to enroll” which leaves admissions committees still confused on how many kids are actually planning to attend. Until they know those #, there will be no waitlist movement

Has anyone called the admissions office about WL movement? I know they say they don’t disclose info about WL but since this year has been quite confusing for everyone, maybe they gave a hint or something to someone?

Are you volunteering?

To keep the people on the waitlist updated, accepted students just received this email this afternoon. It appears more people have enrolled than anticipated and the class size is larger than they would like it to be.

I wonder what happens if nobody drops. Limited resources for the students who attend?

I'm wondering that as well. I don't think they "over accepted". I believe they are trying to balance their incoming class (i.e diversity maybe?). I'm still hoping they pull people off the waitlist.

I was thinking if nobody decides to defer, they’ll keep upping the “scholarship” until they get some bites. But who knows. I’m just hoping they keep pulling from the waitlist once they have people defer AND last minute drop for other acceptances.

I wouldn't for 10k. Maybe 10k/year but that's not even 5% of total attendance

$10k scholarship for M1 would probably equate to ~$13k with interest accrual by graduation.
I mean, your missing an entire year of attending level work. I would consider the scholarship if the value were 1 year's worth of attending salary.

The more and more I dwell on this the more frustrating it is. People were being put on the waitlist since December. I spent $800 on this interview and there was never a chance

Couldn't have said it better myself

How are things lookin'? I feel like if Admissions didn't accept anyone from the waitlist today then they probably sent out rejections to people ranked really low on the WL?

Deferment scholarship just went up to 90k and it says they need 10-12 ppl to accept it, my guess is if other people drop after those 10-12 then they will try to get those with the scholarship back in the class before accepting from waitlist

Wise choice to not bite at the first offer. Still sucks for the rest of us on the WL

Why not?

@Goro I’d love to hear your thoughts and feelings on this

1 year of not being in med school = 1 year of not being an attending physician = lost salary

It's not quite as simple as that though.. as there are other factors you need to consider (e.g. the money you make during your gap year, taxes, interest on your student loan, the specialty you end up going into, etc.). Despite all these factors, I don't think deferring for a year for a $100k scholarship puts you in the green.

EDIT: Confirmed with a VERY rough envelope calculation --> if you went PCP, you would be about ~$50k behind if you deferred+accepted the scholarship (assuming your gap year job is your typical pre-med position making $45-55k/year)

How’d you calculate that?

I dunno I think it may be worth it. 90k+ interest over 8 years I think is more than you could pay down after a year of working as an attending. Am I wrong?

There’s a lot of factors to consider (e.g. gap year salary, residency length, attending salary... etc). The only way I would consider the 100k scholarship is if I was 100% going PCP.

Thanks for the info! Do you mind sharing the email they sent out when they raised the scholarship to 90k please?

Decided to take the deferment offer. I'm looking for someone to fill my lease. Please PM if interested. Thanks!

Hi everyone,
So, I'm applying to UNECOM this cycle, and I'm asking this here because everyone on this thread has been through the app process. I submitted my supplemental fee, but I have not gotten a "Complete" email yet, and there seems to be no application portal. Can anyone fill me in, please? I know they have my primary, supplemental fee ( I got the email for that), and obviously they have my MCAT, but they still haven't indicated that my file is complete ( LOR, whether I"ve been moved for review, etc).
Can anyone let me know what's up? Is this normal?
