2018-2019 Western Michigan University (Stryker)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How are you checking your status? I always get redirected to login to the alumni page and then click on the admissions tab but I only have 2 lines each of " AMCAS Received and Fee Paid & Essays Completed". Is that the same thing
I’m getting the same thing and I got an email saying I was in the experience review a week ago

I think I got the same email. Mine basically said your app is complete and we’ll review it. I guess the portal only updates after the review

How open is this school to OOS applicants? I applied with a 3.95 cGPA 4.0 sGPA, and 517 MCAT and was notified today that I will not be receiving a secondary application from WMed. Any ideas?
woah. sorry man. I guess this school is pretty holistic in review. Did you have a lot of service/clinical/life experience on your app?

Jeez that's wild. you'll def get in somewhere with those stats though

I did, 2 years as Pre-Med Club President, 1 year of phlebotomy, 2 medical mission trips (1 of them I coordinated), a Summer Clinical Research Fellowship and plenty more shadowing and long-term volunteering.

However, I do have some disciplinary issues in my past that I thought I had addressed as much as the character space would allow me in AMCAS, so those may have been a red flag WMed. I also do not have any significant ties to western Michigan so that may have played a factor as well. And thanks tvk315! Best of luck to you both! :luck:

I just screened out presecondary today... have a 3.78 cgpa, 3.81 sgpa, 524 mcat. Also have disciplinary issues from years past. Seems like WMed is likely screening out some “red-flagers,” which is disappointing

Finally moved on to the experiences review. I think they had a glitch in their system. I used to have 2 lines each of " AMCAS Received" and "Fee Paid & Essays Completed" but now the duplicates turned into ''Supplemental App. Offered/ completed''

Called them yesterday because I received a second email from them telling me to do the online assessment even though I completed it two weeks ago. There must have been a mistake in the system somehow, but I moved to experiences review today! Hoping to hear good things from them

I think everyone has multiple entries for each step. I wouldn't worry about it.

Received email saying experience review complete, being considered for phone interview.

Experience review started on 13th

I had a disciplinary action and lower stats but I got a secondary. Maybe if it’s multiple they screen out?

Just checked the portal and saw that they finished the experience review this morning. I didn't get any email about it finishing or being considered for a phone interview. Does that mean I got screened out?

Edit: Received the email for being considered for a phone interview literally 2 minutes after posting this.

Just got the email letting me know I got a telephone interview!

I'm really liking how WMed is handling the application process so far... keeping us very updated. Plus the phone interview step is nice, as an OOS applicant I appreciate the extra screening step before they ask us to spend time and money traveling for an on-campus interview.

Congrats! When did you move on to phone interview consideration? Mind sharing your stats?

Thanks! Do you happen to be IS or URM?

OOS, no ties, ORM, though I did have hardship and AMCAS designated me as EO2 disadvantaged (although I did not categorize myself that way).

The only thing I can think of is that your LizzyM is high enough that they feel confident you'd matriculate elsewhere

Congrats! Can I ask when you got the email that said you were done with experience review and moving on to consideration for a phone II?

I'm OOS with a much lower GPA and I just got done with the experience review. I think they just really want people who fit with the mission of the school.

It seems like their mission is no different than about 90% + of medical schools
Don't tell the other schools that lol

For real though, they seem to have a specific mission in mind that all of us probably don't get. They're also still a pretty new school so I'm guessing they are still looking for a lot of high stat applicants to boost their rankings

is anyone else having trouble with making their "why wmed?" essay question not sound too generic? idk what else to write, other than comment on their curriculum and why i like it (using personal experiences to back it up). im IS and i would love to go here, but its just so hard for me to write something with such a generic mission statement lol

For any folks who got to the phone interview stage last year, do you have any comments on what to expect/how to prepare? It says there is no need to prepare (I'm obviously going to prepare anyway), which makes me think this is not a conventional interview. Do you have any tips? (Obviously, I'm not asking anyone to violate any agreements if they were told not to discuss what questions were asked, but more just a general direction.)

Wait if there’s no need to prepare wouldn’t it make more sense that it’s conversational? They could just be doing this to make sure you’re not a robot

But do they ask normal interview questions? B/c then I can go over normal interview questions and be ready to give a coherent answer.

You can't really prepare. It's not so much the typical "why medicine" stuff. Questions will be about you, your interests in general, and in science and medicine specifically. Be honest about who you are and what you do, and you will be fine!! Its hard to gauge afterwards as well. I used very little time for mine, but still interviewed on campus and was accepted quickly. Good luck!

Thanks! So basically, I can expect to discuss myself and my own interests/experiences?

Pretty much. As you might expect, the phone interview is pretty focused. There are one or two unique WMed wrinkles as well, but you'll be fine

Alright. Thank you! This is helpful information.

How long did it take your status to change from "experience review complete" to "consideration for telephone interview"?

A few hours after it was marked that the experience review was complete I got an email stating that they were considering a phone interview.

Did anybody get experience review complete but not the telephone interview. Mine was finished around noon today, but I figure maybe I wouldn't hear anything further til monday? or would I be told if outright rejected
I'm surprised adcoms would be reading apps over the weekend lol. You'll probably find out later tonight or tomorrow then. Did you get an email saying they were done?

In the same boat, assuming they're waiting for Monday to make updates.

Did anyone use notes for the phone interview? Is this a good strategy? I don't want to sound too scripted but also don't want to ramble on forever incoherently. Also, what sorts of questions could one ask at the end given that they're done by independent contractors not affiliated with the school and therefore wouldn't be able to give us any real information about the school.

Completed last Friday and under consideration for phone interview just now

Anyone know how long it takes to here back about the phone interview after going under consideration?

From last year's thread some heard back the day after and others got them after a few months of waiting. Most others never got the phone interview.

Fun fact: Class of 2022's median MCAT = 516 per WMed's Twitter. Pretty high for a relatively new school! Wonder what this means for their soon-to-come US News ranking.

That seems pretty high for most schools.

My application was finally moved to "experience review". I submitted my secondary on 7/25th. Hope I hear back more good news!
