2019-2020 Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What are your extracurriculars like? I was accepted with low MCAT and I'm trying to accumulate information on what makes their desired applicants tick.

1.5 years of lab research, 3 years full-time clinical research, around 100 hours shadowing, a lot of volunteer hours in clinical setting, served on multiple leadership boards in undergrad.

How are the pre-clinical classes taught? It's a systems curriculum, but are classes traditional lecture style, or small group problem-based learning?
assume you're going to be in a classroom A LOT if you're going to any med school.

Maybe I missed it in a previous comment/thread, but what is the expectation for food/drink in class? I think they mentioned that while we were on the tour but I'm not 100% sure.
Also is there a lounge/cafeteria area that we can either leave our food in, or get food? Or do we need to bring lunch to campus every day?

In the lecture hall you are only allowed drinks with lids on it. Yes there is a cafeteria where you can put your food and drinks in the fridge. There is also a place where you can buy snacks and refrigerated or frozen meals.

Close bottled drink is allowed. Food is not allowed. Although, I've seen people eating snacks in there without a problem.

Awesome thanks for the input! This is not related, but in terms of board prep, does ARCOM provide any prep materials for you, or do you need to figure out and purchase those prep items on your own?
Also I know of a med school I am considering that offers a fall and spring break, each a week long, during the academic year. Does ARCOM offer any time off?

They provide board stuff, but its honestly just filler stuff to show that theyre giving something. But if you really want to do well, look on SDN on how to prepare for boards and get the universally recommended board material UFAP.

Ok great! And I think I read somewhere that a lot of the materials for lecture/class are online... do we have access to the library on campus, or should we rely on using online books for most of the lecture-based material? I assume we would need to purchase the books if we wanted hard copies, but what kind of library facilities are offered?

So I'm interviewing here next week and I'm staying at the Home2suites. what is the safest way to get from the hotel to ARCOM? Is uber reliable or taxi? I appreciate any advice

This might have been mentioned elsewhere already, but for any current students, what is a typical day like? How many hours do you normally spend in OMM lab and/or lecture throughout the day? What time are you normally done with class as well as what time do classes typically start in the morning?

They provide Truelearn AKA COMBANK and Kaplan. And yes, we have fall and spring break, but they're like 3 days long.

Yes, you have access to the library on campus with study spaces, and it has all the physical copies if you need to check them out and use them. If you need your own physical copies you can buy them, but I wouldn't advise you to because that's 2 to 3 grand you can use to do something else. Plus a lot of us has the PDFs of the books as well (which we wouldn't admit or share through the school's network because it's illegal), but majority of us have them just in case we are unable to access the online library, and also because the online books doesn't have page numbers.

Typical day is 8am-4pm (sometimes 5pm). First semester of first year though they will go easy on you and release you by 12pm on most days (at least that's how it was for me). You can skip BECOM lectures (our basic science class) and FHC lectures (our stats and psych/social science class) if you have 80% or above in the class. OMM is 1 to 2 hour lecture and 2 hour lab once a week (I think it's on Tuesdays for OMS1s). First semester of first year you'll have fewer BECOM lectures because of the mandatory fast-paced anatomy course you'll have most days of the week (that ends in November), and 3 hour anatomy lab once a week. Second semester, you'll switch to BECOM (physiology-system based) most days. Thursdays you have FOPC (clinical skills class) till 12pm and you're done for the day.

First year here. I'm just going to talk about my first semester experience. Lectures are 1 hour each. Your schedule is never the same and this is only a general outline of what a week looks like:

-Anatomy: Typically six lectures a week with one three our dissection lab. Two groups dissect, you will dissect once a week.
-BECOM: 4-6 lectures a week with sporadic quizzes thrown in with team exercises. The quizzes combined with exercises can be 2-4 hours depending on what the faculty have for you that day
-OPP (OMM class): two hour lecture with a 2 hour lab
-FOPC (doctoring class): same as OPP
-IBC (integrative medicine, this starts later in the semester and is a random crap we want you to know kind of class): one 2-3 hour lectures a week with quizzes and team exercises thrown in on mondays.

Wake up, go to class, eat lunch, go back to class for lab, go home and study. You can choose to get up early and do other stuff if you want. Welcome to hell. Classes start as early as 7 and as late as 10. You're done with class when you're done with class.

Welcome to hell? I guess if you mean it's just busy then okay (that's expected), but do you like it at ARCOM though? Do you have any regrets in your decision to attend so far?

there are a few things that are shaky as the school is new.. but I'm learning a lot so that's always good. really I'm indifferent. my classmates are really what is make or break. there are the people who act like they're better than everyone else and I tend to avoid those guys. some are pretty weird and spread rumors about people being weirder than them (everyone is weird) to make themselves look normal. mostly the class is pretty good, but I wish more people were more social. the group who is social and gives an effort are generally really cool people.

Can you elaborate on what you find shaky?

Interviewing here on 11/12. What do people wear to the meet and greet the night before?

Is anyone accepted having difficulties uploading documents? I've paid the deposit and submitted the matriculation agreement, but it seems like I can't upload any other documents in the portal

Interviewed 11/05. Anyone think it's realistic to expect a decision within the next few days?

Can anyone answer how much time is given as dedicated time for Step1/Comlex?
We get done first week of April and have till end of June to take it if we wanna take it before we start rotations (starts July 1st). Some people in the class above me that didn't feel ready didn't take it till later while in rotations or during their scheduled vacation month for 3rd year.

Yes I am having the same issue. I’m sure it will be resolved relatively soon. If not, I will email admissions to let them know of the problem

Interviewed yesterday (11/12). Phenomenal school, really warm and comforting feeling. Looking forward to hearing back.

Completed 11/5 --> Secondary Received and Completed 11/15. Anyone here know how long before they received an II post secondary submission?

Typically within 1-2 days.

Wooorddd. Seems pretty quick turn around. I wonder what percentage of post-secondary applicants are invited for an interview. You already had your interview, correct? How was it?

I haven't seen anyone be rejected post-secondary but pre-ii. The interview was pretty fun, went by blazingly fast, no idea how I did though. Very cool school + culture.

Yeah, school culture, facility and faculty all seem fantastic. I'm just happy they're showing some love to a non-traditional, undergrad screw up like me (is it okay/acceptable to post my stats here?). Do you know when you find out? Maybe we'll be future classmates! 🙂

They told us within 2-3 weeks we should expect to hear back but are meeting today to discuss the apps. I presume high priority accepted and swift rejects will hear back sooner. Maybe we'll be classmates, indeed! Best of luck to you.
