2019-2020 Columbia VP&S

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Would a second ITA email be desperate? I’ll be back in ny and dunno to shoot my shot or not

Anyone know what the last MSTP interview date Columbia added was? I remember them saying it was some time in January.

Looking at last years thread it was Feb 28/March 1 with the calls spread between the two days. Not sure how leap year will affect it this year

What's the consensus for updates? If I interviewed a while back should I wait till after decisions are made and couple it with a letter of intent or should I shoot my shot with general updates (conference abstracts/posters/grades) even though my interviewer submitted my review months ago? 🤔 🤔 🤔

My opinion would be update now so your application is reviewed in its fullest extent, and save a letter of intent for down the road

Also for grade updates in general, do unofficial transcripts suffice? Sending in an official transcript seems too extra to me but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Probably a silly question but is Columbia receptive to letters of interest, post-II? Or just intent?

I asked a current student this. He told me that basically, all of our apps are already in one of three piles (A right off the bat, WL, or R). So sending anything prior to decision release in March likely won't make a difference because this would require the committee to reconvene and reconsider where you fall in the piles. So unless it includes a substantial update, he recommended waiting until after a decision has been made before sending anything through. While this is not to say your document won't be looked at during the WL portion of the cycle, timing is important here and you really wanna figure out for yourself if sending them more documents to read will come off as pestering rather than persistence.

Is this something that happens right after each interview? Do you have anymore info about this?

+1 interested. seems like rolling just without decisions release in the sense that if you interview in the last month, you really are fighting for those last couple of seats.

I haven't asked for more info on this. It would make a lot of sense though, because they have committee meetings throughout the cycle, so they must be placing some sort of temporary decision/score/rank on our file.

My guess is that the basis for it being a non-rolling school is that it gives applicants more flexibility in terms of where they fall in the 3 piles as the cycle progresses (people move from pile to pile based on the staircase analogy as later applicants are interviewed).

This is all speculative, though. There's no telling what goes on behind the curtains

Thanks so much! That makes sense. I was originally planning on coupling the letter with an update, although it wouldn't be substantial. For traditional applicants (i.e., current seniors), is it expected to send in some sort of update for the Fall semester (grades, etc.), or only if something substantial has happened (huge award, pub accepted)? If this is expected regardless, I figured it might not hurt to also express continued interest.

anyone have a screenshot of the general itinerary from the portal? It's down rn and my interview is tomorrow lol

Insider tip: the wifi at NYP won't let you access the Columbia portal, so if you are staying at Bard Hall, try accessing the portal on your mobile network. I had the same issue.

Did Columbia send rejection letter or anything pre II ? I did not receive any letter of interview invite or rejection letter.

Should I send the CSS profile to Columbia even though I won't find out if I'm accepted until late Feb / early March? I'd rather wait to see if accepted and save 16$, but if I wait will it delay my financial aid package significantly?

From what I've heard, finaid can be a first come first serve sort of situation, so it may save you much more than $16 to send it as soon as you can! Columbia is probably in a better financial situation to give out as much finaid as needed, but it can't hurt to be considered for it early.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing. Agree with you that if someone has "significant" update, it does not hurt to upload them directly to the portal. Feb/Mar cannot be here soon enough!
