2019-2020 University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the insight! I was curious why you as an OOS student chose this school?

Sorry for the delayed response. I chose this school for a few reasons. I like that there is only 4 hours of class each day as opposed to sitting in lectures from 8-4. It gives me a lot of time to learn the material in whatever way works best for me. I am pretty set on doing primary care and I felt like of all the schools that I interviewed at this one walked the walk in terms of working with the underserved. It was also just a lifestyle choice. I am engaged so going to a more rural program would have been asking a lot of my fiance. Plus I'm pretty big on maintaining a solid work-life balance and San Antonio has everything you could want (bars, concerts, sporting events, great hiking and kayaking just outside the city). South Texas has just about everything that a true Florida Man could ask for.

Also, UIWSOM made it a priority to open their own residency programs from day one, which is huge. They have two family medicine programs, an internal medicine program, a psychiatry program, a sports medicine fellowship, and a few more programs opening in the next year or so.

Serious Question: Just how screwed am I for submitting the 1° about a week ago? No 2° or II yet but it seems like interview slots are filling up quick. Oof...

I would just be aware that they are scheduling interviews out to 2020 currently. I know current students at various schools that interviewed. in the spring of the year they were to enter medical school, and they were accepted. If you are a good fit, you will get an II, but it will be a few months out. They definitely haven't run out of seats in the class because most schools continuously send out acceptances or IIs as students decline their acceptance and go other places. Theoretically, someone could be offered an acceptance as late as a week before classes start.

It sounds like there’s a waitlist to interview now
That's not how the pre-II waitlist works. There are people who were waitlisted back in early September and there have been people since then who have received IIs. Plus, as those who were accepted give up their spots, the adcom can pull from either the pre-II waitlist to bring people on for interviews, if it is still early in the cycle, or the post-interview waitlist and offer acceptances.

Wow, thanks for the insight. I didn't know some of what you shared. Appreciated.

Hi all!

got an II on 10/1! Can anyone share if the MMI was in one big area/room or in private rooms?
Also not sure if you could share this one, but did it include traditional questions as well? do you think their mmi was something that you could have prepared for?
any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Waitlisted. Released my waitlist spot so hopefully it goes to one of y’all!

Can any UIWSOM students inform us on the residency (in texas) situation? I read 2-3 articles about how UIWSOM is a private school so the SB 1066 (senate bill) doesn’t apply to UIWSOM.

TCOM, on the other hand, is a public DO school in Texas so the students don’t have to worry as much on their residency situation in texas if they decide to stay..

I really like UIWSOM but I just wanted more information before I commit.

These are probably the articles? I think all schools are working to measure up in residency creation

"State-run medical schools are now required to create residencies after the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 1066 in 2017. The law says new public medical schools must develop a plan to ensure there are a sufficient number of residency positions in the state to reasonably accommodate the school’s expected number of medical graduates. While that does not directly affect private schools like Incarnate Word, it does put pressure on them to create slots to keep up with the other schools. "

Do the 450 or so people who get accepted, include the people they later take off the waitlist???

Is there anything I need to do to keep my acceptance offer? It seems that we have until Dec 14th to submit the deposit, but I was wondering if there's a form to submit before that date?

Anyone have resources to prepare for the MMI format?
Thank you! I have a couple general pointers/helpful tips:

1. So I was pretty nervous going in at the sheer variety of questions that the MMI can potentially introduce, so I thought it would be beneficial to have a process in which I could use to answer nearly any ethical dilemma presented. If you go to Youtube and search "Coarse Grinder MMI", there are about 16 videos that break down the various stations that you could be presented with. I found it super helpful to watch through all of these videos, twice. Afterwards, I felt that I could apply the same principles from the video to logically reason through nearly any question presented. It likely goes without saying, but it is always good to have some kind of answer guideline prepared for any traditional question you could be asked (Why do you want to be a doctor, why should we pick you, strengths/weakness about you, why this school etc)

2. Second big tip is the most redundant/cliche advice, but what I believe to be the most important, which is to relax and be confident! Go into the medical school interview knowing that they want you to be there and simply want to get to know you better. You are more than qualified enough if you are getting interview invites, so don't let any doubt resurface as you go through the stations. Non-verbals are just as important as the words that leave your mouth, so make sure you smile genuinely right when you walk in, have a firm handshake and try to be conscientious about any underlying subconscious idiosyncrasies. With that being said, you will be just fine. Everyone at this school in particular is soooooo incredibly friendly and welcoming. It's just conversation and being YOU at that point!

Let me know if I missed anything or if you have any additional questions.

THIS advice was the best advice I got! I followed this advice plus I got a bunch of friends/my schools mock interview services/a very trusted old professor to practice ethical questions. If you just google MMI practice questions you should be able to get the the page from BeMo that has 100 MMI questions. That's honestly golden, and if you can practice role playing, even better. I did all of this within a pretty short time frame and I felt good about my interview on 10/11, well see what the outcome is soon hopefully :nailbiting:
I also watched some random videos from Kharma Medic on Youtube, which were pretty great in terms of advice as well! Eventually I just went down a hole of related videos and ended up watching a lot in my free time lol. Whatever works for you!

Do I even have a chance at interviewing at this school? Sounds like the II's have pretty much dried up at this point. I submitted my primary 10/6, going to submit my secondary tomorrow, 10/16. I have good stats, 3.5 GPA and 515, but I'm worried that it may be too late to hold out hope for this school.

If you don't try the answer is always no. If you really like the school it's always worth a try. Plus DO interviews and acceptances run until pretty late in the cycle.

I bought the MMI book by Dr. Desai for my Kindle. This was a nice introduction of what to expect and what was expected of me. I used this as a guide to research various topics that could come up in my interview and I made sure I could discuss them! I used practice MMI questions I found online and I watched tons of YouTube videos as well. I feel like I totally over prepared compared to others but I’d rather that than to be caught off guard! 🙂

I just now started applying to this school because I saw the primary deadline was in March, but from reading this thread, it appears I should have applied earlier given seats and especially interview spots are filling up?

Are there final dates for interviews?

Email and ask - they're really receptive to questions. I know one med student from here who applied too late to be interviewed but her stats were so good that they promised an interview for the next cycle which they actually followed through with

Long time lurker here, so I got waitlisted after my 08/23 interview and it’s looking like UIWSOM is my only chance so far this cycle of becoming a DOctor. I’m getting anxious. Any idea if getting waitlisted so early on in the cycle is good or bad? Or when I might expect to hear back? After stalking old subs it seems like if I do hear back it will be springtime (OOS applicant)

Currently am in the exact same boat, except interviewed 9/16.
