They stressed a number of times that just because you don't hear in the first round of decisions for your interview date, it doesn't mean you're necessarily rejected -they quite possibly just didn't get to you. I'm not sure how comforting that is, but really no news is good news in this process.

I hope so. I interviewed 9/11 and didn’t hear anything 10/15, so I’m in ultra worry-mode. When did you interview?
Same date! I was disappointed they weren’t able to review all the interviewees from 9/11, but they did say not to take a “later review” negatively. If I remember correctly they meet every 3 weeks, so my logic is that they either met right before rolling out decisions on 10/15, or they met the week prior, meaning it’s likely we will hear decisions this week or next week for the rest of us that interviewed 9/11 at least. Who really knows though, here’s to hoping for tomorrow!

Hi! so this is just my .02$. I was invited for an interview. For people invited to interview, they provide this video link that explains some information regarding the application process. Last year, they received 6k primary and RECEIVED 4k secondaries. So I am assuming the 2k were either screened out or just did not submit. Now, they invited to interview 500 students for a class of 100 (probably accept around 200 total).

They also stated that they expect this year to be NO DIFFERENT. If you ask me, how they go to from 4k secondaries to 500 students WITHOUT taking a look at the metrics (gpa and mcat), that is mind blowing to me lol. So take that as you may, but again 4k students get secondaries and 500 get interviews. Good luck to you all!

Did the video say that they don't consider metrics between the secondary and the interview? From what I've heard with most places, is that if you get the interview then they "believe that you're academically qualified to come here," you just have to interview well.

What is the best way to prepare for the CMU Interview process? I have an interview on Friday

The video did not mention that. I have asked other schools what their policy is, and they said they consider their entire application after the interview. The only difference is who you are being compared against, and in this case it would be those who have interviewed. A common misconception, usually from bad advice, is that all that matters once you get an interview is the interview itself. While this might be true for some schools, it is definitely not true for most schools. Nonetheless, you need to do well on the interview regardless, so just focus on that!

FWIW, I interviewed in Sep and was accepted in Oct 15. I am OOS. The interview is very chill, just prepare hard for MMI scenarios and don't panic.

Best of luck!

So stats matter to some extent, but not as much as the initial review process. All I'm gonna say is, if I got in with my stats, they truly look at applicants holistically.

hi everyone! current m4 here - let me know if you have any q's!

In CMU's mission they state there is an emphasis on rural medicine. Could you explain how big of an emphasis it is? I'm interested in learning about rural medicine but don't want it to be the entire basis of my learning.

Quick question: Did they already send out 500 interview this cycle already or are you taking about last year?

I think that was what they said about last year. But at an info session or something, someone reported them saying they've sent out more II's than usual already. I think. Hard to keep all these schools straight at this point lol.

Mt. Pleasant is in a rural area in mid-michigan so they do hope that a decent amount of students they teach will work in a rural area. However, many people move on to residencies in large cities and don't specialize in rural medicine. It's not a requirement to want to practice rural medicine but that is one of the clinical experiences they focus on.

(at least, this is true as far as I know. My friend is a recent CMed grad and that's what she told me.)

Did anyone write thank you notes after interview? Wasn’t sure since it’s MMI . Also, does anyone know how frequent the admissions committee meets?

I just wrote a general thank you email to the admissions email, though at each station I did thank each interviewer as well. I doubt whether or not you send one will have any influence on their decision, but it's always a nice thing to do if you have time. I wanna say somewhere up thread, it's been mentioned they meet the first and third week of every month.

Is CMU still sending out invites & have any late-August/early september people gotten any IIs yet?

They are still sending invites. Based solely on activity in this thread they have been quite slow to do so

Do you think they’ve sent out a majority of II? I don’t know why but I feel like not many have been sent out.

Just based on this thread alone (take with a grain of salt), it does not seem like that many IIs have gone out. I believe CMU sent interviews pretty late into the cycle last year as well

I didn't send a thank you note and I got an A....so if you feel like doing so, go for it. I guess I just figured that since there were so many people involved in the MMI it wasn't worth it. When I do a 1 on 1 interview I'll probably send a thank you note.

Does anyone know if they let you take notes during the 2 min prep before each MMI / use notes during the MMI? I know each school is different.

During my interview, I took notes at each breakpoint in the MMI and group scenarios. If I'm not mistaken, they do not mind interviewees from taking notes and encourage it. Though, I found that I would hardly look at my notes when I was actually speaking with an interviewer.

Love to give my story of how I interviewed in September, got NOTHING at all about updates till I got an email in December stating I'm still in the review process, then waitlisted in January, and then didn't hear back again until May lol. Longest wait of my life.

When does CMED send a follow-up email regarding interview time and details? My interview is next week but I have not received any follow-up info yet.

My interview was a Friday and I got an email with times and my portal was updated the Monday before. The times were a little off on my portal but they updated a day or two before interview.

For everyone still waiting like me, I checked last year's thread and the next day people heard was December 10th and people heard back that day who had waited 3 months since interview
I saw this too but it seems like they do it on Tuesdays (Dec 10 last year was a Tuesday) so Im kinda expecting it on December 8. They also updated more people the week after too. So we should hear back sometime in December
