I'm trying to pre-write my secondaries and I'm just a little confused on the interest one. Do you get a box for each interest and write 300-500 per interest or is it 1 box for both interests?
It gives you a specific prompt for each interest with a max of 500 words to answer. For instance, if you select simulation, the prompt is "Simulation – Why is simulation in medical education important? How do you anticipate simulation will affect your medical education? Where do you see simulation playing a role in your medical career?" You can prewrite a little bit but I wouldn't do too much in case the questions go a different direction than what you were thinking.

Is anybody else applying to GMED or UMED? There are no word limits. Do I cap myself at 500? Or say everything I want to say?
Even if there are no word limits, it's still a good idea to be as succinct as possible. Aim for 500 unless you actually have more to say (not including fluff).

I am applying to GMED. And I have no idea about the word limits. When I submitted my secondary, these tabs with GMED and IMED essay prompts were not there. Does that mean I can go back and fill out these parts? Because I definitely submitted my application without writing any essays for GMED/IMED under the "scholarly concentration" tab. And, I got an application complete e-mail. Are they going to start processing my secondary without GMED/IMED essays writen? When are these due? Sorry, lots of confusion here on my end

does anyone know if I don't check off any scholarly concentrations right now, that would negatively affect my app? because I am just tired of writing tbh. Even though I submitted my app a month ago, I just realized that I needed to write more for concentrations

The scholarly concentrations are completely extra. Think of them like a tertiary application; they can be submitted completely independently of your secondary. I really don't think they come into play until after you are already given an II or admitted to the school; from there they will take a look to try to fill these programs.

Not sure when exactly the concentrations are due or what the word count is. Again, I really wanna talk to whoever designed this application and give them a piece of my mind, lmao. None of the changes they've made have been communicated at all, and the app is still super unclear.

Can someone link the open house for UICOM. I cannot find it in my email when I registered for it. Thanks in advance

Has anyone attempted to submit an update to their application? I'm not sure if the "document upload" section will allow me to submit additional updates after I do so, and not sure if a research paper being accepted is worth letting them know, especially if I might have more updates for them later on.

I think a research paper being accepted is absolutely a good reason to give an update, but the question is how many more updates and how soon for the new updates do you have? You don’t want to be a nuisance so if you’ll have more info in a month I’d hold off versus maybe like 3 months from now.

I think this was touched on already but just wanted to be sure, were the Secondary Photo and "Scholarly Concentration" always there? My app was complete July 28th but I'm surprised I'm just now noticing I didn't fill those out.

Yeah they were always there. The scholarly concentration doesn't matter for admittance. You can still apply for them after submitting secondary and getting accepted.

They were always there but the question stems for the Scholarly Concentrations didn't show up at first, maybe that's why you didn't do it. Don't worry about filling them out unless you're truly interested in one of the programs.

Gotcha, thank you for giving me a reason to not write an essay haha too burnt out at this point.

Quick question about the photo. I have a photo of me in a suit but the background didn't look very professional so I photoshopped it for a plain one. Does anyone know if that could be an issue (like if they realize the photo has been edited)? Feel like I'm being a little extra neurotic here but y'all understand the struggle

As long as you didn’t photoshop yourself into a bar or something silly nobody will care. Just make sure the photoshop looks professional Lord knows I have no clue how to work that program.

I also photoshopped the background on my headshot! (It was originally in front of some Christmas lights so kind of a distracting background.) As long as you make it look plain and professional I don't think they'll notice or care!

I submitted my app a week ago and everything has been received. My app is still marked "incomplete". Is it normal or should I email them about it?

Regarding the additional interest essays (science research/innovation medicine, etc.), did you discuss UIC/specific aspects of UIC in the essay or solely talk about your experiences and interests?

I discussed what I’m interested in and what I can talk about through my experiences. I’d imagine the team looking at these apps can easily sniff out someone trying to tailor their app to what they think a particular campus wants if it isn’t backed up by actual experiences shown throughout your application. I picked basic science research and talked about how Parkinson’s disease runs in my family, and also picked healthcare disparities because of my many clinical hours working with underserved communities.

Picking things that matter to you are going to resonate far more strongly than picking what you think will you into a particular campus.

I first talked about my interests/experiences and then related it back to a program/extracurricular UIC offered in my reflection paragraph.

Anyone know how their secondary works? Do they send out to all completed apps, pre-screen, have cut-offs?

On their website they report that due to Covid-19 circumstances they are sending secondaries to everyone and you can apply without a MCAT but will need one before an acceptance can be offered.

They are doing an open hour in ten minutes that will likely answer any questions you have.

does anyone know if we will only receive the VITA invite if we receive a II or will all applicants receive a VITA invite? because I re-read their secondary email and it says "We are participating in the AAMC Virtual Interview Tool for Admissions (VITA) which is a required component of our application. You will recieve a separate invitation for that online interview from HireVue directly."

You only receive the VITA invite if you get asked for an interview.

To those with II's already, is your interview with a specific campus? If so do you mind sharing which one?

So obviously it’s different than last year since it’s virtual but my “campus” is the Chicago campus. They try to pair you with the school they feel would be the best match for you and their mission statement.

For example on my interview tab it says
“We are excited to have you participate in our virtual interviews at UICOM Chicago.

Although your interview site is not predictive of where you might be assigned upon admittance to the University of Illinois College of Medicine, we hope that you will consider requesting assignment to Chicago.”

Hey, how long did it take for your guys LORs to be reviewed? Its been about a week or so for me and I'm getting worried.

I would recommend reaching out to them about this! When I submitted my secondary, my application was not complete because my LOR's were not complete, despite all 3 of my letters being marked as received (you can check this in your portal by clicking the Status -> Document Status). I emailed them about this after waiting for 1 week and found out that the letters I submitted didn't meet their qualifications. I quickly fixed this and my application was marked complete the next day.

Thank you! I just emailed them and within like 30 mins it was complete. Also, I submitted 4, do you think I should ask them about that.

Does anyone know how many IIs they’ve sent out? Because it’s been kinda quiet from here

I believe Chicago is the first campus to do interviews starting next week so I’m not sure if they have sent out interview invites yet for the other campuses. I believe also they are starting slow to make sure that everything works properly, I imagine they don’t want to have people’s interviews rescheduled or messed up due to technical errors.

It depends! Are all 4 faculty letters? And if they are, is there one letter that you think may be weaker compared to the others? (If yes, then I would email and ask whether you could clarify which letters you want them to consider). For me, I submitted 4 letters, but 1 was invalid because it was written by a doctor I work with and not a faculty member.

Ok this may be a stupid question so sorry in advance, if we’re writing about “healthcare disparities” for the second question, do you think they actually mean healthCARE disparities (as in health insurance disparities) or just health disparities? Because they’re technically different, but it feels more fitting that they’d be asking about health disparities

I would say feel free to take it in the direction you want. Healthcare disparities is a contributor to health disparities and can thus be discussed, but I would say discuss whichever aspects are important to you or you have involvement in.

I'd say go with whatever area of healthcare you want to talk about. I focused on socioeconomic/racial disparities.

Hey all just wanted to say that this school has been fantastic in terms of building a really good interview day and doing everything they can to provide an in person like experience even though it’s virtual. The staff have been very open and really went out of their way to talk about what makes their school special and unique. Really really enjoyed the interview and would be overjoyed to be accepted here.

I'm sure if the enthusiasm you share here for the school shined through during the interview, you'll be a shoo-in. Don't forget to send thank you emails if you havn't already!

Opinions?
Wondering how deep to go for the 'stress' essay. I lost two family members within a month of each other a few years back. It was pretty stressful. Planning to tie it in to dealing with death as a physician, and accepting that life is unpredictable.
I feel like I get in so deep with writing all these secondaries that I have absolutely no perspective. Anyone have an opinion about if this is too dark for a question about stress? Thanks in advance.

I think as long as you can stay relatively "objective" about the experience and talk more about how it was a difficult time in your life, how those feelings (and potentially extra responsibilities you had to take on) had an impact in your life and how you learned to manage those feelings etc. If you can additionally tie it in to how you are empathetic towards difficult situations that others have experienced as well as recognizing that as a physician you will have to deal with death of patients and how you have learned to cope, I would say that it's a good topic. I'm rambling a bit, but I think as long as you can explain how it was stressful and how you managed that stress and what you've learned that the topic should be fine.

Has anyone interviewed here? It seems they haven’t sent out that many IIs
