2020-2021 Illinois

Does anyone know if the MSTP revisit days at the end of march will be in person?

Any current students on here able to speak to whether anyone has ever been successful in appealing their site assignment? Assigned today to Rockford, and I am unable to leave Chicago due to the fact that my career, husband, son, and mortgage are here. I am crushed, to be frank. Going to write a letter highlighting my long career in Chicago and desire to continue to serve the community here. Please let me know if you have any insight.
Not the same thing, but they granted me a deferral last cycle so my daughter and I wouldn't have to move away from hubby who had to finish an out-of-state contract. They were also super accommodating during my interview (I was pregnant). I had the best admissions experience here by far, everyone is very supportive and understanding, especially regarding family matters. I hope to see you in Chicago 🙂

Thank you for your comment! This is very reassuring. I've been so sad this week. I hope it works out!

M3 at the Peoria campus. If you don't get Chicago try not to worry too much. I initially wasn't thrilled, but overall I'm glad to be in Peoria. The Peoria campus consistently has higher step 1 scores than the other campuses. Cost of living is cheaper. Peoria is not that far from Chicago so you can still go home for the weekend. We are guaranteed that all of our clerkships will be at the same 2 hospitals in Peoria so you don't have to worry about scheduling clerkships all across the city (M4 year you can do rotations in Chicago if you want). Most of our rotations are at a level 1 trauma center (also a peds level 1) so you will have access to plenty of interesting cases. Never been to Rockford so I don't know much about that campus.

Hi Peeps! Current m4 on the Chicago campus currently waiting for match week and pretty much done with rotations. Feel free to ask any questions or send any messages. I remember this time before med school being stressful especially with things being virtual this year
Hi! I was just wondering if you know if there is any chance of having some in-person classes in the fall?? Obviously it is hard to say this early, but do you know if M1s have been able to work with the cadavers/have labs/do any research in person at all??

Any tips on how to find a study style, that doesn't include anki? I wasn't a fan of anki in undergrad and most of the resources online only talk about anki :/ lol

Not the person you replied to but yes we have had plenty of in person learning. We (M1s) usually have two days per week that are in person right now, including anatomy labs. Cadavers yes. Research I think it depends on the lab - some are accepting new students some are WFH but yeah i expect everything to open up further as long as we don't get hit with the ~fourth wave~

are they still giving out interview invites?
I called the admissions office last week, and they said the last interview day is March 4th. So, we just need to wait for the wave of pre-II R at this point.

In terms of study techniques, you gotta try all the different things early on, find which works, and most importantly stick with it! Use block 1 to experiment, and use the weekly quizzes to gage what works.

The most commonly used and the gold standard in my opinion is UFAPS.

1. UWORLD: you should start during your second year, specifically block 7 so you can get through a full pass before step 1. I know it’s p/f for you all, but doing well in step 1 is very much linked with doing well in step 2.

2. First Aid: so helpful to knowing the overview for each topic and random minute details that might not be covered in class. Start taking annotating it from week 1, block 1. Review each section weekly as it correlates with that week’s quiz. Don’t purchase, the school usually gifts this during orientation.

3. Pathoma: a God send! A must purchase in my opinion, especially starting block 2 when you start learning heme/onc. Helps explain things in such a simple manner, emphasizes what’s essential for the boards and visually simple.

4. Boards and Beyonds: more detailed than pathoma, but equally as useful. Most use this for the cards, neuro, pulm, and the renal sections since those are physio heavy and pathoma doesn’t really go into physio.

5. Sketchy Micro: If you’re a visual learner, this is a must for Micro, which you’ll start in block 2. Some use picmonic instead, but I’m not a big fan

6. I know you said no anki, but it truly is helpful, especially if you use the premade decks and update them with any new info you learn. The other thing that’s great about it is it keeps all your materials in one source that can be easily accessed anywhere especially when you‘re on rotations studying for your shelf exams and STEP 2

7. Some extra: AMBOSS is gaining some popularity... I didn’t really use it so I can’t speak to it

Pre-II R. In-state, born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, ties to the university, LM 69, several hundred research hours. They also said that they are done sending out interview invites.

That one stings a little.

Good luck to those on the waitlist or those with upcoming interviews.

+1

Raised in rural Illinois my whole life. Stats above the school's median. Got a lot of love from OOS schools so idk why UIC thought my app was garbage given they interview like a third of the IS pool. Still happy I get to get out of Illinois tho lol.

Good luck everyone and congrats to those who made it!!

Pre R too..There was no way qualified applicants were all going to get love especially with nearly 10,000 + apps. I have decent stats and got no love this cycle. I did take a September mcat.

Its a crap shot. Take a breather

What were your stats? I got a rejection today, too!

I didn't get the rejection email today but it sounds like the email indicates that they are not sending more interviews. Did they just neglect to email me and just get my hopes up for nothing?

The email I received stated: "Our interview season for the 2020-2021 cycle is closed and we will not be extending any more invitations for interview."

So I gave in and emailed them today about campus placements lol I'm sure they're quite busy but hopefully we all hear back soon !
I mean they must have a good amount of them set and just not entered in the system. Or else how would they be giving some people such quick turnarounds?

Has anyone started looking for roommates? Do people find roommates by posting on the Facebook group like in undergrad?

Is anyone that interviewed back in October still waiting on a decision from this school? Deferred decision for 5 months now

Does anyone have the transcripts from their universities marked as complete in their portal? I sent them back in december but I still cant see a change.

How worried should one be about the background check if one has had multiple speeding tickets in the last 5-6 years?

dr. Amir said that while AMCAS doesn’t require applicants to disclose speeding tickets, UIC does require everything to be reported and they DO take those into consideration.

I am wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation.

I can't imagine that matters... I just had my Certiphi come back and there was absolutely nothing on it even though I did get a speeding ticket almost 3 years ago.

Unless you were ever arrested or had to appear in court, I don’t believe it counts as a misdemeanor or felony and shouldn’t appear on a background check.
