Does anyone know how much of an impact research experience has in the admissions process for Meharry? Like are my chances of getting accepted very low if I have no research?

Don’t know off-hand. But MSAR includes this data. If you’ve got it you can see what percentage of matriculants had research. I do not believe it breaks it down by quantity of research though.

Hey everyone, so it's kind of a last minute idea but I'm thinking of applying to some 1 year biomedical science programs to have an option should this cycle not go according to plan lol. Does anyone know of some decent institutions that have something like this?

I think you can get a masters degree in biomedical sciences in one year at my alma mater. Message me if you're interested and I'll hook you up with some folks.

Meharry has one. You can either get referred to it in the spring and I think they have started doing open applications as well, meaning you don't need a reference you just apply. If you complete the program with the appropriate GPA and MCAT, you start medical school at Meharry right after completing the masters.

Oh this is very appealing as I actually want to attend Meharry for med school. Thanks for sharing!

they don’t send interview invites through the portal. You’ll get an email from the school if you get an interview.
So in the confirmation e-mail after completing my application, they say "Please remember the following ... View your status via "View Your Checklist." Status updates will not be provided via phone or email." (bolded & underlined in the e-mail). But I don't have a "checklist" option to view... I've e-mailed but haven't heard back. Do they just mean if you call/email them for updates they won't provide them? But you'll still get an e-mail if your invited to interview?

This doesn't sound like an email that most applicants received. I sure didn't... the communication I received said they will communicate via email.

I didn't receive an email about a checklist either, but when I log into my secondary and click "view details" it shows my status. Maybe that's what they meant? Mine just says submitted.

Looking into this further- it was the actual secondary invite email (seems like someone else above had read the same thing about the portal). Now I also noticed the email address I received the secondary from is different than the email I received all further communication from (including the confirmation email

My only thing with that is- I got a secondary from another school that also uses Apply Web & I’m able to click a “View Your Checklist” option for their app & the status under “view details” says “form successfully submitted” (like Meharry’s) but I got an R from them... lol. Either way, I found the confirmation email said they’ll send a written notification of any status change so my neuroticism has calmed a bit:joyful:

I got this email too so you're not alone! It was also followed up by one that said "individual status updates can not be given via email or phone. You will receive written communication when an update is available". I don't see anything about a checklist either on the browser, only the view details tab
Thanks for helping me clarify!! I found the email that mentions the written communication  I realize now what I saw was probably addressing the individual status updates via phone or email.

506, 3.9 GPA, OOS URM. Secondary received 9/25. Submitted 10/11. II received 11/2.
507, 3.33 GPA, OOS URM. Secondary received and submitted 9/25.
literally same stats and submit date haha, hopefully i hear back soon, but congratulations! I am wishing for good news for you! Did they mention how long it will take to hear back after interviewing?

I submitted my primary in september and no secondary. they've sent me the same email 5 times stating " If you are receiving this email, please note that that your application is under review. The Admissions Committee completes a holistic screening and review process. Once the review of your application has been completed, and all supporting documents have been received, you will be notified with a status update."

Ok, I'm starting to think it's a wrap for me...I mean my stats aren't stellar but I thought they were more than good enough to be heavily considered for Meharry but maybe not :arghh:

it's literally November lol. It's still VERY early here. Meharry interviewed someone on May 28th last cycle. Accepted the person the next day. This was 15 days before classes started. I say this to say you could hear today or you could hear all the way in May or not at all. Also, the HBCUs don't really work off stats like that. They are more interested in ECs and experiences. Try not to put all your eggs in the Meharry basket lol. Hopefully you applied to other schools and hear back!

Yes I applied to others but I dont think my stats would get me much.

Cgpa 3.5 sgpa 3.2 MCAT: 502....I did have upward gpa trend though but most schools aren't REALLY interested in you holistically. I double majored in music performance and biochem and have tons of EC, research, volunteer, shadowing and clinical but tbh most schools really just look most heavily at those 3 stats so I don't anticipate much love from most schools....I was just hoping my committment to their mission would stand out but from the trend of people getting II, even they are looking for higher stats. I get what you mean about it being November, this was more of a blowing off steam thing, not A "I'm doomed" thing lol just noticing that people who have submitted around the same time and even after me have heard back.

You would be surprised. A lot of non-HBCUs/PWI aren't getting that many URMs in their application pools so you stand out almost immediately because they still need a somewhat diverse class. With HBCUs, majority of the application pool is African-American and URM so it is harder for us to stand out. It truly comes down to mission fit and do you embody what they are looking for.

Don't worry, a lot of schools grab the higher stat folks before moving onto the next block of applicants. They try to poach them early because if they interview well then they will have several acceptances to choose from.
Blow off that steam, but don't get down! You'll get your chance with such a fabulous background.

Thanks for the encouragement! 😛

It's still too early to get down on Meharry. lol. It's November. You will be fine. A lot of these high stat people that Meharry is interviewing/accepting right now, I'm sad to say because it's a good school, won't go to Meharry anyway. They will go elsewhere. Unless I've missed something and they started offering free tuition like NYU. As of right now, I feel like 95% of Meharry's incoming class has not even interviewed yet...so if Meharry is your #1, just have patience. Hope you also applied to your state school.

Thanks. Yes I applied to 13 schools. My state schools were included and I have already received the rejection lol but yeah I'm just venting. You know how these cycles can really weigh on you. I'm already taking a year off currently and I'm just so eager to get closer to my goal. I think most of my anxiety honestly has come from staff at my undergraduate university that really discouraged me and on several occasions told me to think about other careers options. It just goes to show the impact your surroundings can have on you. That's another reason I believe Meharry would be good for me because it's a community of people that will support me and encourage me, not try to redirect my dreams. Anyway, thanks for the input.

have you considered going DO or nah? totally fine if you're not interested in that track - but I think you would be a competitive candidate and its not too late to apply

August 15

Same!!!! I'm happy I'm not the only one. I honestly think because of the late start and high number of applications they lost some of us in the shuffle. When SIs started going out they went out to people who were completed in July or September and missed a lot of the august complete dates . It's pretty disheartening. I don't know about you but my stats are solid; I have had several IIs and 1 acceptance so far. But I love meharry! The people, the supportive atmosphere, and the location. I sent an email about 3 weeks ago. I got an immediate auto response, but nothing else... Was anyone else who's waiting on that SI able to get in contact with an actual human?

yeah I’m not too upset I have 3 II two from my top two schools, it’s just odd lol. I have a LM 69. I am black though so I was like ok...

That's so weird. I completed my app in mid September and I received a secondary by the end of September. I think many people did. Keep trying to email and call. I'm not sure if it could be a screening thing. Sometimes even solid stats may not be quite in line with whatever they are screening for? Idk I'm really just guessing. Keep trying to reach out though.

Has anyone received anything like this? Does anyone know what this means?View attachment 323154

It looks like you’re missing some of their prereq requirements. Are you currently taking biochem and physics II with lab? They’re probably seriously considering you for an interview, but want you to be aware that they won’t give you an A without those classes first.

If you’re currently taking those classes this semester or planning to next semester and it’s not reflected in your AMCAS (as a “planned course”), I would update and/or email them to let them know you are/will be taking those courses.

(Edited to add: It looks like the email is from Howard U. This is the Meharry thread. No big deal, but just wanted you to be aware!)
