2021-2022 Central Michigan

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's a 2x2, right? I just googled like "resize my photo to 2x2" and a bunch of websites popped up that do it.

It was a 3 by 5 but I got it! Thanks :)

How are yall approaching the reapp question? How would they even know if we have applied before...

They wouldn't tbh.... that's the one I'm currently debating on too
i don’t remember if it was reapp to CMU or reapp in general to med school, but i was a reapp to med school but not CMU. i think i answered the question just because i think honesty is the best policy lol 😂😂 and the med world is only getting smaller and i’d be terrified of getting caught in a lie through some weird connection / don’t want my app invalidated for including false info. i also wanted to talk about how much my MCAT increased from last year because i’m honestly too proud of it and will tell anyone who listens 😂😂

It shows up on AMCAS as your AMCAS ID number stays the same year to year. Tell it like it is!
I guess I will. But I thought schools couldn't see if we've applied before (to other schools)? I haven't applied to CMU before

The wording of their prompt is inclusive, "If you have applied to any medical school in previous cycles".
They don't ask you to list them.
'Any medical schools' also includes DO schools.

Incoming M1 with some time on my hands, so I wanted to pop in to wish everyone applying the best of luck and that I could try to answer any questions you have!
hello there! first of all congrats on your A :) was browsing CMU's website and couldn't find much about volunteering - would you happen to know any specific volunteer programs CMU med students can take part of?

To everyone asking about the reapp question: please just answer honestly. Being a reapplicant is not bad as long as you have made improvements to your application between cycles. It's 100% not worth the anxiety of wondering if they're gonna find out you lied. And it's also not worth the consequences of them finding out you did lie. CMU is honestly super holistic in their review process, so if you're a reapp it's not like they're gonna go "hmm this person didn't get in anywhere last year, we're not going to look at them any further." So, 100% what @lunchsparkly said: the admissions team is not trying to trick you. They just want to know who you are as a person so they can judge your fit for the school.

Thanks! :D I know CMU is very mission-driven, which includes volunteering. Most of it, I think, is done through student interest groups so you could check those out online and see if any tickle your fancy. Also, there's actually tons to do at Mount Pleasant (which surprised me, coming from the east coast), lots of elementary schools and stuff, so I'm sure there's plenty of places to volunteer at that aren't necessarily connected to the school. Hopefully an upperclassmen or someone more familiar with the area will chime in, though!

Hi all! Incoming M1 to CMED here! I was a re-applicant myself and I actually felt like having a space to answer this question was to my advantage. A lot of people think being marked as a re-applicant is a negative thing. Rather, I think being a re-applicant shows tenacity, determination, and grit. It really demonstrates that you want to pursue medicine, regardless of the barriers in your way, and that you are committed to this service. It is also getting monumentally harder to get in each cycle, so being a re-applicant is both common, and absolutely okay. From my personal experience, it gives you excellent perspective and a lot to talk about during interviews. That being said, don't be afraid to talk about the growth that's come with having to go through this again. The re-application process is albeit awful and miserable, but I think re-applicants can have a leg up on first time applicants because of the amount of perseverance that is shown with being a re-applicant. Also, CMED really cares about who you are as a person outside of wanting to be a future physician, so use this space to showcase that. Best of luck with your applications this cycle :)
Thanks so much! I"m OOS but have a strong connection to Michigan and really ended up loving CMED! Just was unsure about what might hurt me, being a reapplicant and all, but I am so grateful for your kind and gracious reply :) Thanks so much and good luck in your first year, future dr!!!!

Just submitted my secondary. Was only able to get to near 700 words for the first question. Adding any more seemed redundant. Also, CMU has one of the best portal systems I've seen so far!

Anyone know when interview invites come out (or when they've come out in past years)?

I got my interview 9/1 last year. But I don’t think I was the first wave. You’ll probably just need to read through old forum threads for past years to get a good consensus.

I still haven't gotten a secondary. Do they screen?

Do you know if there are any student teaching opportunities at Cmich med?
Current M4. Not any formal ones, no. There is a great peer tutoring program. It's unlikely that you would have time to teach meaningfully in addition to your other responsibilities. There are vacation periods where one could try to find some teaching role, though I haven't heard of anyone doing this.

I'm OOS, I think 5% of the class can be OOS students. I'm not sure about their criteria or anything, but I know being a strong mission fit helps.
Current M4. There is no hard IS/OOS quota. IS students are favored, but there is always a solid OOS portion of each class.

MSAR says last year 4,561 OOS applications, 132 OOS interview, 2 deferred, and 25 matriculants, but the first year class was only 103, so 25% ish is a good chunk!

also i just looked at the out of state tuition 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

Is it true stats are still blinded when they make interview decisions? On SDN in 2018 someone linked this on their website, but I can’t find it now.

someone up a bit said 500MCAT/3.2ish GPA. someone also said "From what I remember, CMED doesn't really screen for secondaries as long as you meet GPA/MCAT cutoffs, but the secondary answers are actually paid a lot of attention to. And I think the secondary screen is a pretty low GPA/MCAT cutoff anyway so I imagine most applicants are fine." so you could always email and ask...

I haven't submitted my primary here yet, but are y'all saying CMU's cutoffs changed?

In previous years it was a 500 MCAT and 3.0 GPA, and now y'all are saying it's a 500 MCAT and 3.2 GPA?

Asking because I got secondaries in the past from CMU with a 3.15 GPA (post bacc 4.0)
