So I submitted my secondary but I saw their LOR requirement needing a letter from a medical professional. I have a LOR from a clinical research site manager, do you guys think this would work? If not, I have a LOR from a DO but I didn't submit it with my AMCAS since I thought it wouldn't be required form any school. Could I send Hackensack an update with the DO LOR?
They did specify that it didn't necessarily need it to be from a physician "health care professional (does not need to be a physician – can be a nurse, social worker, physician’s assistant, occupational therapist, psychologist, etc.)" So I think that a letter from a D.O is good

Anyone else get the preliminary review email, but not the first phase review email yet? Getting worried

No 1st phase review yet. I just assume we're slightly lower down the priority list. They'll get to us eventually!

So I think I may have misunderstood the reapplicant prompt(s). The first question asks whether I've applied to Hackensack before, and to answer the next question "as well" if yes. The following question then asks reapplicants to indicate any updates since their previous application.

For some reason, I read this pair of prompts as directing you to only answer the second one if you're specifically a reapplicant to Hackensack. But now I'm thinking it was a separate question that I should have answered as an AMCAS reapplicant? Just wondering if anyone can confirm before I reach out to the admissions office. Thank you!
I interpreted this the same way you did!

Received the Preliminary Review Complete email at midnight, after the Preliminary Review Start and First Phase Review Complete emails.

"Your file is now being reviewed to determine if you will be selected for an interview."

I will say, I applied last year pretty late (9/5) and only got the Preliminary Review Start email. I don't think the emails have anything to do with ranking, more so the speed at which they're reviewing applications and when said application was complete.

When did you submit your secondary?

Don’t think it’s that. I submitted secondary first day I got it and haven’t moved on

Ah, i hope you hear something soon! i'm not a high stat applicant by any means which is why im thinking it's more of a timing thing than a ranking thing

More than just stats go into creating priority tiers of applicants!

Just got the first phase review email, got the prelim email a few days ago.

Can any current students give more insight to the Phase 2 and 3 curriculum?
Hello I am a MS1

Phase 2 is clerkships, essentially equivalent to most other schools' third year. Phase 3 is what they call fourth year at the school. You can enter residency in select specialities within the Hackensack Meridian network (specialties included that I remember off the top of my head are IM, FM, anaesthesia, gen surg, neurology, OBGYN, peds, EM, and psych) or you can do a customized fourth year to boost your application for the regular match. Options for fourth year if you don't go into residency include research, clerkships of your choosing, getting a master's, maybe some other stuff I can't remember.

Has anyone else not heard back at all? I submitted on 8/6 and it’s been radio silence since. I’m kind of worried now lol

I know Hackensack split from Seton Hall, but does anybody know if the school still holds onto any official catholic/religious stuff? Thanks!

I'm trying to complete their "why us" secondary prompt, but after surfing their website, I'm stumped. I'm not sure if it's my incompetence, but I can't seem to find any opportunities for medical students besides research. Is anyone able to provide some insight into this? Thanks!

Search for “student affairs” and it’ll bring you to orgs and other outreach programs they offer.

Sorry to hear :( when did they send you the preliminary review email versus the update?
I haven’t been formally rejected but I got the preliminary review started email in early august but haven’t not heard back. It seems like a lot who have started after mine, moved on already

wait whats after prelim review? I only got prelim review and I submitted early august too

Some people have got preliminary review completed. Mine has never been completed.
Sometimes it takes longer than others, don't lose hopes just yet, the email states that the process could take between 3-6 weeks! I submitted Aug4 and only getting the prelim review now.

Lol at least you guys have heard back. I haven’t heard a peep since submitting. I guess it’s an R for me.

I took the prelim email to mean “hey, we got your secondary application now we want to make sure we have your letters of Rec, MCAT score, etc” and nothing to actually do with admissions/interview decisions. But then again who knows lol!

Phase 1 is more lecture-based learning, typically correlates to the first two years of medical school at most places. Phase 2 involves clinical rotations at hospitals in the HMH network. You have shelf exams depending on what rotation you are in, (i.e. Pediatrics, OBGYN, etc). Phase 3 is a customized period that starts after the three-year core curriculum. Students select a personalized pathway possibly including a dual degree or certificate program, clinical immersion, research-intensive activities, a community-based project, or entry into residency. Based on the first class of 60 students, about a third of students went straight into residency, which is what the P3R (Phase 3 Residency) is. Unclear if this proportion will increase since it was also an odd year with COVID. P3R is available for most specialties outside of competitive surgical specialties.

So is phase 1 or the preclinical condensed to a year ?

Just wondering has anyone not had a true literature class and gotten in here? I applied and noticed they require a literature class which I have not taken but I have taken classes that include a lot of reading and writing from and about historic documents and writings. Do you think admissions is strict about this requirement?

Anyone else get an email saying that a physician/health care worker letter is required? I didn’t know Hackensack had that requirement, so now I’m on hold until AMCAS receives my LOR and sends it to them. 🙄🙄

When do we submit the technical standards sheet on the secondary? Do we send that in when we submit the secondary?

Anyone still on preliminary review despite submitting awhile ago?

Just got email confirmation (8/30) that Hackensack has everything. Your email should look like this:

Dear <<Applicant>>,

We have received your secondary application and fee. Your application will now be in preliminary review. We will send you another email when the remaining parts of your application is reviewed and you have moved to the next step of the process. If you are missing any items from your application, an email will be sent regarding the missing items. This is a very busy time so please allow 3-6 weeks for this process.

All the best,

Office of Admissions
Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine
[email protected]
973-275-4838

Got my secondary 8/4, completed and subbed 8/6, so that's over 3 weeks to hear confirmation (expect it to be longer if you submitted your secondary after me).

After worriedly emailing them about a week ago to ask what the holdup was, they were very cordial in their response:

Dear <<ya boi>>,

Thanks for your interest in Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. Yes, your application has been received, we are in the process of reviewing all the secondary applications. I hope I was able to answer your question. Please contact the Admissions department if any other questions arise.

Best of Luck!
<<nice lady speaking on behalf of SOM>>

Based on this my best guess is:
Everyone's apps have been received without email confirmation. They're taking the time to manually review everything before sending it off to review, and THAT'S when you get email confirmation. Sit tight! We got this :)
