2021-2022 Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-KPCOM Clearwater)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those accepted, which campus are you going to and why? tampa bay or davie?
Davie: Very diverse, expensive, and high pace area. You get the full college campus and college experience with undergraduates running around, IM sports, rock wall, research facilities, etc. Miami and Broward have lots of nice beaches, huge party/nightlife sciences, lots of beautiful people, lots of Hispanic culture and a growing Asian presence.

Clearwater: Very white. Laid back. Still pretty expensive. The town itself is full of retirees but the surrounding areas are a bit more lively. The weather is way nicer and overall significantly less humid. There are nice parks everywhere. St Pete has a lot of hippies and lots of drum circles. The beaches here are nicer and less crowded. Still lots of stuff going down up here just not as fast paced as SoFlo. The campus here is beautiful and brand new. We are right across from a beach overlooking Tampa Bay. One thing missing is research opportunities. The school likely due to its location on top of fragile ecosystems doesn't have biochemical or cadaver labs. There is also only medical and healthcare students so campus is a more serious place.

I interviewed 10/14 I believe and I got the A on 11/05! Stats 3.38 cGPA, first semester SMP GPA 3.9, 507 MCAT. I don't think my SMP GPA was a factor. I did get asked about my undergrad grades and how I have learned from them and I talked about my SMP. And also for the people with wayy better stats than me, I think this school places a looottt of value on underserved community health. I really made sure to talk about why specifically NOVA considering I'm from out of state. I talked about their rural setting rotation that is compulsory, their education model that strives to educate students on medicine in context of the homeless population, etc. I also had a lot of underserved community volunteering myself as well which I think really helped during my interviews! schools seem like such a crapshoot nowadays, but I just made it well known that I know what NOVA has to offer and my prior experiences align with the school's mission!

Same, they just had to drive home the fact that we’re rejected I guess 😅

I was 3.7/514 and got my interview and acceptance in April after meeting the admissions counselors during a medical school fair then sending them an LOI. I think what they really filter for is people actually interested vs people applying broadly. I am fortunate to have strong connections growing up close to the school and having a sibling that graduated from a different doctoral program there.

Getting back to your question, Dean Wallace, specifically told us during our orientation that they don't necessarily care about high grades and achievements. They want interesting and unique people.
well I would classify myself as unique and interesting but crickets.... I graduated from UF was on their gymnastic team and then toured Europe and South America performing for Cirque du Soleil. Got injured so bad had to have back surgery but while touring did the UF medical microbiology masters program. Went on to rock climbing and then when covid closed down the gyms started my own traditional, grain free, and gluten free bakery Lolaspastries. 3.76 GPA undergrad 3.86 GPA grad school 500 MCAT ... I understand MCAT is low but to say they want unique over stats ... I'm one case they don't. Also lots of shadowing, clinical hours, volunteered Florida Diabetes camp and a gymnastic place developed by the head of PT at UF where they teach adaptive gymnastics to special needs kids. I now have a paid internship at Cole Diagnostics.

So sorry for everyone who got Rs. I’ve been there last cycle and I know how painful it can be. I believe that a lot of this process depends on luck and things that are outside of our control and it doesn’t necessarily reflect who you are or how hard you’ve worked. NSU receives 7000+ apps each year so remember it’s not personal. As long as you don’t give up there’s a light at the end of the tunnel

Hey guys, does anyone know if NSU-KPCOM has mandatory attendance for classes? If so, how many of their classes are mandatory? I have been accepted and considering living situations! Thank you in advance.

did anyone get an email inviting them to their special program that guarantees applicants an interview/acceptance in the entering class of 2023? Trying to figure out if they sent it to everyone or not and if that will make me feel better after getting an R

Hi guys! I am not sure if this has been answered before but I was wondering how clinical rotations work for TBR students? Most of the sites listed are closer to the Davie campus, so do TBR students eventually have to move over to that area in their 3rd and 4th years? I was accepted into the Davie campus but still weighing my options and preferences and seeing if it makes sense to request to switch to TBR. Thank you :)

Upon completion of the 2nd year, all students (both TBR and Davie) are entered into a lottery system, from which the order is randomly chosen. The students then get to pick from available rotation sites. Neither campus will give you a better chance at a specific rotation site, so that should not be a factor when making your decision between TBR and Davie.

Ah okay thank you! And aside from the rural rotation placement, do we spend all our rotations at one site or do we have some rotations at other sites?

Added the school on 11/09 and got the secondary on 11/11. Sent the secondary on 11/11 after an hour of being received. Marked complete today.

These pre-II R emails are scaring me lol

Hey to all of you who got rejected recently don't feel bad! From what I've learned by talking to adcoms, Nova is looking for students interested in working in underserved/ rural/low-income communities pretty much strictly in primary care. Theyre big on international trips in rural areas where theres no proper electricity or water. With that being said, they only invite those who are pretty much already planning to work in these conditions as PCPs instead of a more competitive specialty. If you've gotten a rejection from them it only means you're destined for bigger things that don't necessarily align with Nova's mission. Don't give up!

got it too!!

Hi all,

I am a current M1 at NSU-KPCOM Clearwater if anyone has any specific questions. So far my experience has been very positive. While medical school is more challenging than I anticipated, literally every single professor we have had has been awesome so far. Additionally, the environment here is very collaborative. Please reach out if you have any questions, I will try to check this thread periodically. Best of luck in the application cycle!
What is campus and clinical rotation requirements with respect to covid vaccination and/or mask mandates? I have read that Florida does not require either one. Lowest cases in the US.

Where do most Clearwater students live? Any specific apartment complexes that are popular among the students?

Anyone get accepted off the alternate yet? Last year I saw movement starting around Dec 18

ok question? can someone be overqualified for this school, because I truly don't understand where I have gone wrong here...
Respectfully, no one is "over qualified". We've all worked our butts off, tried our hardest. Its up to the school who would be the best fit, not who's the most "overqualified". Not trying to start anything, but that kind of thinking isn't super helpful. If you want advise on where to strengthen your app, I'm sure anyone would be happy to help!

You complete all of your core rotations (entire M3 year) at your assigned rotation hospital. You will then be completing your audition rotations at various hospitals with residency programs you are interested in throughout your M4 year.

We are not required to wear masks on campus, except for when we are in classrooms/labs. You can study on campus without a mask. In regards to COVID-19 vaccination, you are not required to get the immunization for your pre-clinical years. It is up to the hospital you are assigned to for rotations if they require it.

Any 3rd or 4th-year students or alum able to speak on their experiences with rotations? positive? negative? any insight?

Is anyone else unable to access the portal? It says my link is expired in the email, so I'm not sure how to get in now

Accepted back in October but will be declining my acceptance offer to NSU-KPCOM to attend another program. To those waitlisted or currently waiting on an II, I hope my seat goes to one of you and wish you the best of luck during the ongoing application cycle! :)

I wonder why I haven't heard back from them yet? I was marked complete approximately a month before you.

Anyone considering their post bacc program after their R email? I feel like it does guarantee a spot if your gpa is at least 3.6 for their post-bacc, which seems doable to me.

Also really considering it because I have not had any response from other schools and Nova still is a better option than a Caribbean school imo. I saw their 2020 residency match list, and it's pretty solid for a DO school.

Anyone in the same boat??? lol

I would only consider an SMP if you have a gpa below a 3.0 and have too many science courses to make a dent on your sgpa. These programs are expensive and if you score below a 3.5 you're at risk of ADCOMs viewing your SMP gpa as a negative. SMPs are kind of a final resort, I'd personally do a DIY post-bacc at a nearby college by taking upper level science courses. Combined with an MCAT retake you can increase your chances a lot. That's just my 2 cents tho, each person has a different story.
