2021-2022 Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My WL school has a ranked list and I have my rank already so idk if it'd impact me. But my situation is the other way around, I currently have no A's. Just 2 IIs to 1 WL and 1 R. Could that hurt me in any way? Would my WL school be able to see where I was rejected?
Not at all. All they can see is whether or not you are PTE or CTE somewhere. If you had an A at a school that did not require use of the CYMS tool (believe it or not, there are a few out there!), they could not even see that you have the A.

Which then begs the question whether WL schools seeing that you are PTE elsewhere helps or hurts? An argument can be made either way, but it just doesn't matter for most, because they have no decision to make, unless you have an A and your school does not require use of the tool. If your A school requires PTE, you have to do it. And, if you don't have an A, you can't.

I'd be very careful doing this (check the schools PTE policies) as from what I've heard schools will drop you shortly after 5/2 if you don't select them in PTE but I could be wrong. Otherwise waitlist movement would all occur a week before classes start lol and imo May is already so late/painful for movement to begin.
THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^. Be VERY CAREFUL that your school does not require PTE by 5/2. Most do, even though their CTE dates are all over the place!!!!

From what I understand, it’s a gamble
No, it's not a gamble. Either they don't require PTE by 5/2, in which case you will be fine. Or they do, in which case you will not have an A any longer within a few days of 5/2 if you do not make the election. There is actually no element of chance at all here.

Can you help me identify if Rosalind Franklin has a PTE date of 05/02? All I see is information on their CTE date of mid July and I’m also worried of a broader AMCAS deadline of 05/02.

Neither of mine requires PTE selection by 5/2. Does that mean I should not select it to improve my chances on the waitlist?
THIS is the million dollar question!!! 🙂

Personally, I do not think it will make any difference at all this early in the WL season.

If I was on the other side of the wall, I would think people who already have an A are more desirable than those who do not, but a very legit argument can be made for the opposite, so there is no clear answer here. Other than that, I don't think in the first few weeks of May that schools are going to care about what other schools did with a candidate before making a decision.

You are correct. MSAR mentions a CTE date but nothing about PTE, so you are probably fine if you don't want to select PTE by 5/2. I'd reach out to them just to be sure, rather than relying what might be an omission in MSAR. There is also nothing on their website. Again, it costs nothing to make sure. I certainly would if I were you.

Have you seen anything from IU for PTE and CTE? I emailed them a few times with no answer.

This is really confusing so can anybody help me with this?

So...I haven't been accepted yet, and I am currently sitting on 3 WLs. I also have two schools I haven't heard back from, and it is going to take a while since I did these in April. So there is nothing I can do for PTE right now.

Does this mean that if I am fortunate enough to get off the waitlist for one school, I would have to commit to enroll ASAP regardless of what is going on at other schools or else I lose the offered spot? (I just wanted to understand the waitlist process lol)

Hey I'm in a similar situation and someone had to explain it to me too. Once you're accepted, you'll have a deadline to accept your spot/PTE with the A. However, you can stay on the other WL until the CTE deadline for the school you're accepted at, at which point if that's your only A, you'll want to take it presumably. CTE deadlines for schools vary widely.

This makes so much sense. Thank you!

Nope. Same thing as Rosy. They publish a CTE deadline (7/11), but not a PTE one. I wouldn't skip it without getting a confirmation from them that they don't expect it.

Do you know why these PTE deadlines are so poorly defined at certain schools? I find it hard to believe that a school like RFU wouldn't have a PTE deadline as it seems like the majority of their class comes from the waitlist each year. Just seems like a very important deadline for a school to define to prevent a lot of confusion and headache.

Yes. Because it is a kludgy substitute for what used to be uniform "traffic" rules administered by AMCAS that included a platform where schools could see where you held WLs and As. AAMC wanted to get out of that business, to avoid any potential accusation that it was part of an anticompetitive or collusive process.

In its place, they set up the system we have now, but made everything voluntary and up to each school to decide for itself. For this reason, every school does not require using CYMS at all. CTE dates are all over the place, since the AAMC recommendation is 3 weeks before orientation, which is also all over the place.

You are 1,000,000% correct about PTE deadlines generating the bulk of WL movement across all schools. If RFU chooses not to play, and if it doesn't take action if its admitted applicants select PTE elsewhere while hanging onto a RFU A, that will indeed delay their WL movement. It's not clear though, that even if they don't require PTE themselves, that they will be okay with people not PTEing to them while PTEing another school, since most schools do expect people to drop to 1 A by 5/2, even if they are not requiring PTE.

I am going to be traveling to two different countries between May and July, and the phone number that I currently have in AMCAS is not going to be in service during that time (as I will be changing out SIM cards for both countries). What would be the best way to communicate this with the med schools and the AMCAS system?

Should I update the portal with my international numbers as I get them, or should I update it with a friend's phone number who will be in the US? My family will be traveling too at certain times too (and they're not fully fluent in English), so it might be more difficult to use their phone numbers. Also, does anyone know if schools typically call or email for waitlist movements? If possible, I would like to adjust my main contact preference to email, as I will still have access to that abroad.

Thank you!

You need to reach out to each school and ask them. AMCAS is going to be irrelevant at this point. TBH, you are playing with fire here.

Schools are going to want to talk to you, not your friend. And they are going to have very tight turnaround times, especially as we get into June and July. If you make it a PITA to get in touch with you, by phone, you very well might find yourself passed over.

If you are serious about this, and if you think you actually have a reasonable shot at getting a call, it is in your interest to suck it up and spend whatever it costs to make sure you can be reached at the phone number the schools have for you. Good luck!

Was on 2 WLs, just got the R from one of them 🙁 . But they said I'm being placed under consideration for their one yr post bac program that guarantees admission the following year so it's not a complete loss..

Hoping the other WL I'm on takes me off early may

Just replying to myself here to give an update for anyone who may be in a similar spot. I've reached out to all the schools that I've been waitlisted at, and all of them have told me the same thing. They just asked for me to update my AMCAS information to have an accessible phone number while I am out of the country. On AMCAS, I can also add a separate person who can speak on my behalf regarding getting information from the schools. One school did say though that sometimes the callers will not disclose acceptance information with a third party over the phone, even if I gave them authorization, however this would not have any influence on the probability of my being called. They also asked me to send an update to the school's portal after updating the AMCAS information with the best contact information, and that since the schools will send updates via email as well, there really should be no problem. Turn around times are definitely looser in the beginning of the WL movement and stricter later, but there shouldn't be a situation where the person on the phone needed to decide on the spot.

Two schools even encouraged me to travel during this time, as they thought it was the best time to do so prior to orientations and the start of med school.

TLDR; don't worry about it. update AMCAS and the schools on your best contact information. Be sure to check email frequently, and there should be no problems.

I just wanted to share a few observations I have made over the years, both as an interested observer and this year as a real live applicant, and to wish everyone the very best of luck as we enter the peak of WL season next week.

First of all, it has been said ad infinitum, but bears repeating-- anyone making it this far should be extremely proud of themselves. Each school applies an 80-90%+ screen to applications pre-II, so making it through that, even just once, is a BFD. Clearing that hurdle multiple times is an even bigger deal.

Next, it is worth remembering that, by design, every school is going to have at least some WL movement. If they don’t, it’s because someone screwed up, and people can and have lost their jobs over that. Unlike an airline that gives you a voucher (if you’re lucky) and puts you on the next flight if they overbook, it costs schools tens of thousands of dollars, per person for each of 4 years, to induce people to accept the interruption to their lives and careers by deferring for a year if schools overbook. They go to great lengths to avoid this, primarily by being conservative with initial acceptances and using the WL to fill in anticipated gaps.

Finally, and most importantly, while people on WLs with no As are understandably anxious, all is not doom and gloom at the end of April. Once each school dips below its projected class size (and almost all will by Monday), each and every WL call WILL, ULTIMATELY, result in someone, somewhere, at some school, receiving an A who did not have one before. This is the only way all classes will be filled!!!!

Either the first person receiving a call has no A and gratefully accepts, OR they now have 2 As and have to give one up within a week. This repeats itself in multiple waves, across all schools, until the last people receiving calls have no other A to give up.

For this reason, we should all be happy whenever anyone gets a call from any school. If it’s a school where you are on the WL, because it’s a sign they are having movement. And even if it isn’t, any call, anywhere, can create movement at your WL school.

The one exception to this is at the very top schools, where people tend not to give up their seats, since they really have nothing to trade up to there. So, at the top schools, there is basically just one wave, where the stars give up their excess As and there is basically one round of people making the leap from T20 to T10, or T-whatever to T20.

But below the T20 or so, there is wave after wave of this, starting two weeks ago, really picking up next week, and continuing with some velocity into mid May before starting to slow down, but not really drop off until mid June or so. Calls will continue to go out until classes start, as some people drop out at the last minute, but there really will be a ton of movement over the next few weeks, and A LOT of people who have nothing now WILL have something before things start to calm down at the end of May.

If it is meant to be, it will happen. And, if it doesn’t, while it will suck, that will put you in a position to get into an even better school with a better application in a future cycle.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!! STAY STRONG!!!! 🙂

That was inspiring!! All I know are the SCAM calls are going to have a field day with me starting Monday

Wow, that was like the speech made by the president in the alien disaster movie "Independence Day....

"we shall not go silently in the night because for many in the SDN world, the days following May 2 will be known officially as waitlist independence days"

.....or something like that 😉

Thanks. I just know from the past few years that people are going to start freaking out when people start reporting getting calls en masse, so I was trying to get ahead of it and spread a little positivity and share what I observed over the past few cycles.

Good to have some fun too, though seriously your help is truly appreciated.

Believe and have faith, the best is yet to come for many here. Your hard work will be rewarded when the time is right.

Currently on an unranked waitlist at a school that typically has solid movement, and it feels like the Wild Wild West.

And they typically accept people until orientation! I’m manifesting my A there because it’s a mission driven school that I would love to attend.

Literally had a dream I got the call from one of my WL schools last night. Holding out hope for all of us homie 🤞🏻👊🏻

Hi! Currently on 4 waitlists. I sent a letter of intent to my top choice 2-3 months ago. Is there anything else I can do at this point? Don’t really have any new updates to provide

Are we supposed to do the PTE thing? Does this apply to both AMCAS and AACOMAS?

PTE/CTE only apply to AMCAS. I would look into the policies wherever you are holding an acceptance. I know some schools are very strict with CTE deadlines and will rescind your acceptance if you don’t abide by them.

AACOMAS has its own set of traffic rules.
