2023-2024 Buffalo (Jacobs)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone accepted know if they extended the deadline for CTE past 4/30 for the purposes of giving out aid packages bc of the FAFSA issues?
CTE isn’t until June 17th for Jacobs, but you still need to follow AAMC’s traffic rules (you can only hold 1 Acceptance after today but can remain on waitlists).

CTE means withdrawing all waitlist positions as well. Unfortunately you can’t hold multiple As after today even if there are delays in financial aid processing.

Has anyone that was WL in December gotten an A? This wait has been so arduous. I sent a LOI back in December should I send another one? Like as a continued interest kind of thing. Truthfully, I don’t have any updates, but I want to stay on their radar. Jacobs is still my #1 even with other acceptances.

Nope. I was WL in December but haven't heard a single thing from them since then

The groupme has 148 members currently. Does anyone know if this is pretty much all committed students?

The deadline to plan to enroll to UB was April 29th, and commit to enroll opened on the 30th, so I would think a very sizable portion of us are committed. We’re seeing some waitlist people getting accepted on a daily basis.

I don’t think it’s ever a bad idea to remind them you’re still interested and have them see your name pop up again.

I was accepted off the WL when it started moving May 1st and my interview was in October, WL in December.

So I interviewed in Feb, was put on waitlist on March 25th, and got an acceptance on May 1st. I sent them an update letter just prior to my interview in late January, and then subsequently one in February, March, and April. Some of these had significant updates, some of them were reiterations of previous stories and whatnot, but the main theme was that I am interested in this school above else, intend to practice and serve the communities in Buffalo after medical school, stuff like that. A current medical student told me she got her interview shortly after sending a letter expressing her absolute commitment to serving and staying in Buffalo. I think it'd be wise to send them as many letters as you want but also having some common sense in what you write (even if you don't have significant life-altering stories or changes) and not sending them days apart. Just my two cents on it, but there is still plenty of time for movement. A lot of UBMD physicians told me they got in off the waitlist, some later in May.

Congrats- does Jacobs use in house exams or past NBME exams? Past fail?

Still holding out hope to get in. Have 2 DOs but really want this. Might have to take one of the DOs because losing time to find a place in Buffalo - they should really revise the process to make it sooner. On campus housing?

No on campus housing for medical students.

withdrew my A, hope it goes to one of you guys. Financial aid apparently went out today

I'm super conflicted. I have been accepted to Buffalo (I love the school and am so excited), but I am still on the waitlist for Downstate. My family and s/o live in NYC, so going to Downstate would allow me to be much closer to my support system. I have until the 14th to fully commit to UB, but continuing to wait is further delaying my ability to finalize housing and ability to build friendships within the class fully. Should I wait until the 14th or just bite the bullet and commit? I NEED advice.

I mean I gave up Buffalo to go to a school with my support system because that was more important to me. I would email Downstate with an update letter or tell them your situation to see what works for you. After that, you should try to make a decision. Support system is everything. Med school will be hard and for me I can not do it without my family. You just have to consider what's best for you.

Has anyone tried contacting admissions about future movement? Trying to gauge if the class is near full or not.

Unfortunately the emails with waitlist notifications say not to contact admissions regarding movement or position. The class definitely is not full though, in recent years each class has been 180-185 students (GroupMe is at 164), and they are notorious for taking awhile to take applicants off the waitlist, especially IS applicants. Unfortunately, aside from an update letter or letter of intent the only thing left to do is wait and get ready to re apply.

Just curious, how do we know that every accepted student has joined Jacobs GroupMe?

We don't know for sure, however that's best way and really the only way to potentially find roommates and meet classmates, so it's likely all accepted applicants or all maybe a small few who committed. It's a mystery as to how many seats are left, but I know from the past couple cycles they do admit people off the waitlist in June and July, sometimes even after that. There's also commonly people who commited but then will withdraw if they get accepted at another school, but again, as to how many is a mystery. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the next CTE deadline is maybe in June or July? There will probably be more movement after then. I don't know all the specifics, but either way there will certainly be more applicants accepted off the waitlist.

The first day of orientation this year is July 14 so I would plan on the 12th (last business day before this day) to be the last possible day of movement. CTE deadline is sometime in June but idk exactly what the date day is
