2023-2024 Emory

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
for course requirements it says requires 8 credits but at my school, each semester course was 3 credits so the total is 6 for me. Also, for my general chem and general phys with lab, they were full year courses so I only have one class to put for those as the grades were received at the end of the second semester. I am not quite sure what to do
Same question here for gen chem. I can't submit my secondary because of this

Edit: admissions got back to me and said:

"Unfortunately, we can’t edit how many semester hours it counts for because of how it’s appearing in the AMCAS data; however, we have advised others who are impacted in this manner to select the green “Add” button at the top of whichever category was impacted. This will add a new row. Click the box next to “Future Registration”. A textbox will appear where you can comment about how many semester hours those courses should cover.

This will allow you to progress from this page and the Committee will have all the necessary information they need on the courses when reviewing the application."

Hope this helps!

1. List your entire curriculum plan for the 2023-2024 academic year. If you are not in school, please briefly describe your plans for the coming year.

5. If you have any updates or new information to report since you have submitted your AMCAS primary application, please briefly describe below.
Do you think it would be reasonable to repeat activities in these two prompts? In my case, I started a new volunteer and research position earlier this year that's not listed on my primary.

What if I'm just going to continue the same activities I am currently doing? Should I have newer plans on top of that?

You know, sometimes the receptionist or clerk answering the phone is not completely knowledgeable on everything.
Your best source is always the website which says:

Lastly, you will need to complete at least 18 hours of coursework (6 semester-long courses) in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Examples of courses that meet this requirement include:

  • Anthropology
  • Art/Art Appreciation/Art History
  • Black Studies/African American Studies
  • Classical Studies
  • Economics
  • Foreign Languages
  • History
  • Journalism
  • Literature
  • Music/Music Appreciation
  • Philosophy
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Religion
  • Sociology
  • Theater/Film Studies
  • Women’s Studies
where did you find this list? I can't locate it

is their website down for anyone else?

Do ya'll think it's okay your interest in working in one of Emory's affiliated hospitals in the Why Us question? Or are we supposed to focus on the curriculum/medical school itself?

No, which is why I'm a little stumped on what to write for it. I've really just continued doing the same job and volunteer activities I was doing since writing my primaries.
I don't think it's supposed to be a gotcha question! I'm writing that a job I put on my primary fell through and what new thing I'm doing now that that's not happening anymore in 2 sentences. If nothing has changed you could just say that nothing has changed - I'm sure they don't want to read fluff but understand that a lot could have changed between the end of May and now.

yeah, considering the number of times they use the word "briefly" in their essay prompts, I think I'm going to just keep at 2 to 3 sentences explaining that not much as changed beyond what I outlined in the "what are your upcoming plans" prompt.

hi guys, my school only offers lab with organic chemistry 2, not 1. so i have 7 hours of orgo technically. Anyone know how i should enter this on the secondary?

So for the service and health-related experiences questions are people essentially listing with some reflective details? Or just focusing in on one or two activities for each

I opted for a list with reflective details! Although I only had three clinical experiences to mention so I was able to do 3-5 sentences for each.

I did a paragraph but with some reflective details for stand outs but not many.

Does anyone know if indicating interest in MD/MPH affects your application? I.e., are you only considered for MD/MPH or are you also applying for MD only?

There’s an extra 500 word essay but the portal said that if you indicate it just means you get to have a meeting with the MPH director if you’re selected to interview!

Does emory send updates on first-round, second-round "cuts" before getting sent an II?

"Emory School of Medicine is committed to recruiting and educating medical students who will help deliver quality health care and will promote the health of our patients. In our community, this includes learning about and addressing the health care needs of our most under-served populations. Please describe any of your activities that have been in service to under-served communities."

I think someone may have asked a similar question already, but did you guys opt for a list with a few sentences for each experience? I'm getting tripped up by the wording of "describe any" rather than something like describe all.

Not sure if I should write this more into a story-type essay, but then I won't have enough space to cover all the related activities...

I chose one and told a story. I don't think you should list the activities in my opinion. They can already see all the service activities you did. It would probably be more useful to use this space to tell a story from one of these experiences.

For the service in underserved communities question, do you write about something healthcare related? The question itself seems more broad, but they led the prompt with healthcare soooo

I did not, I just talked more about my community service activities that I partook in with underserved communities and expanded upon those experiences.

Hello! Could any MD/PhD candidates share how much they wrote for each faculty member about your interest in their work? A couple sentences? 200 words?

hey guys! for emory MSTP, they are pretty clear that you need a letter from every significant research advisor, and if no letter, a note from that advisor stating why. problem is, I don't have a letter from my gap year advisor bc I started in June after I sent my primary. also, this is a pretty big lab and I don't really know my advisor well, I've spoken with him like three or four times so getting a note might be hard. what should I do? Emailed admissions + followed up but they aren't responding 🙁(

If its been a couple months since you've been doing this, I dont know if i would even consider it a 'significant' research activity yet 😉 so I don't think you need to worry

That's fair :") It's significant to me b/c its full-time and I'm doing some cool stuff so wanted to discuss it! But I might wait to include it if that's the case

I think what the commenter is saying is that they won't expect a letter from that advisor since the experience just started, not that it isn't significant.

So you should definitely include it, but just know its not necessary to get a letter since they know you just started.

Yes that's what I meant! Sorry for the lack of clarity

Wouldn't it be risky to include the activity and not have an LOR or a note at least? They said they're working full time since June, which would be close to 400 hours by now. @bruh_moment_ any chance you could get a note from them?

Yeah, I put a note/disclaimer in the activity description. I think I'm gonna try to get my pre-health committee to send a note and if that doesn't work I'll ask my PI to send one. My school had a committee/letter packet service and their deadline for letters was May 31st as well so I will cite that as another reason. All I know for sure is that if I were to get a letter, it wouldn't be very good seeing as I don't know my PI well at all

That is a fair point. I presumed the expectation on LOR was for when you submitted your primary. Realistically, he could ask them now, but it is recommended to give your LOR writers 4-6 weeks so he would've had to ask a month or two ago when he didn't have enough experience in the job to get a LOR.

And if he asks now, his app will likely be read before the letter arrives.

I'm not the admissions committee, but imo they shouldn't expect a LOR from him for this activity.

i am a woman! but yeah I generally agree

For the health related experiences question, how many did you guys talk about and how in depth did you go?

For the last question: If you have any updates or new information to report since you have submitted your AMCAS primary application, please briefly describe below. (200 words)
Is there anyone who just answer "NO" or "N/A", I have written about my update in the 1st question and don't want to sound redundant. How is this question not optional?

The phrase If you have any updates
makes it optional. If you don't have any updates, don't write it.
Especially those who very recently submitted their AMCAS primary won't have anything new.
If you can't submit without writing "something" in this space, write: I have no updates since submitting the AMCAS primary.

For the question asking "If you have any updates or new information to report since you have submitted your AMCAS primary application, please briefly describe below," is this referring only to recent updates or is it also an "additional information" question? Would it be appropriate to include something like a gap year essay here or an essay explaining academic inconsistencies? Or is this space solely reserved for updates since AMCAS submission? The part about "new information" could be interpreted in more than one way and I don't want to make a mistake

I said "N/a". I didn't want to ramble about the same things, I will send in an update when I have a real update!

I interpreted it as "since your AMCAS primary application", which would mean new updates after July. I wrote "n/a" and will update them later if necessary.

Looking for advice on if applying here would be worth it as a male. LM 73, lots of clinical hours scribing for 2 gap years, a few local and international volunteering experiences, great LORs, no ties to the area. Didn’t realize until now that their acceptance rate is just about the lowest in the country and that their class is 70% female. Essays wouldn’t be a hassle, but would be nice to save the application fee. Thanks!!
