Thank you!

i saw on Reddit someone mentioning how the med school is going through an admin change currently. Is there any truth to that?

Congrats! Stats?
LM: 69.1, I also went to school in the Twin-Cities (not the UofM) and grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis. I also have very close ties and motivations to work with the homeless population in the Philips neighborhood!

Someone, who is a current student at the UMN also mentioned something similar to this earlier in the thread. They said it was likely the reason why they school seems so far behind in sending things out this year

I work at UMN Department of Medicine and have friends in the med school. They just hired a new assistant dean of admissions earlier this month. They supposedly only have two people working on admissions for the entire program. That along with the new interview format is likely delaying everything this year.

I also just wanted to say for everyone who hasn't gotten an interview and is feeling worried - don't! I know it's easier said than done but the interview season is quite long and there is lots of time left. I have many friends who interviewed in February and got into UMN or other schools. UMN's waitlist also moved a ton the past couple years so that's something to keep in mind as well :) Let's all hang in there!

UMN has undergone a decent amount of admin turnover in the last year or two, I think mostly related to the new curriculum and shuffling responsibilities around (new curriculum means not every job still exists and some people got put in new roles they didn't like or had new responsibilities added that they weren't interested in). The people at the top are more or less the same. I'm not sure how much current students are even aware as most of it has been behind the scenes stuff and I've never heard another student mention it. I only know because I regularly talk to someone in the know.

For what it's worth, this has been happening throughout my 3rd/4th year and has had zero impact on my education other than we don't get to rank core clinical rotation sites by preference now and just get randomly assigned a clinical site for core rotations only (essentially all of our rotation sites are in the Twin Cities for TC students though, and you're still allowed to trade with other students). Electives you still get to choose your site because you select a location as part of the sign up process. A 1st/2nd year might be able to speak to if they have noticed anything, but my guess is not because I haven't heard any grumblings.

Ultimately I think it's all a wash - not much seems to be different. We've gained some great people and we've lost some great people, but the day to day hasn't changed at all that I can tell.

Having more experience talking to people from other US medical schools now (residents and med students on aways), I still maintain UMN is probably one of the most supportive and considerate med schools out there. It's not perfect, but I've heard so many horror stories from other med schools and every time I've been thankful that I haven't had to deal with those things.

While I agree with the things said here, I would encourage you all to ask MS1 and MS2 students about their preclinical experiences during the interview Q&A or other meet and greet opportunities (especially if you are interested in the Duluth or St. Cloud campuses). The changes haven’t affected us much as MS4s, but I know there have been a lot of challenges with the new curriculum.

Thanks so much for the kind message! Any info on what the new interview format is?

So instead of MMI they have an asynchronous and Zoom interview. The asynchronous portion must complete before the Zoom interview. There are 3 questions and you have five minutes to read and record your response. The Zoom interview is 30 minutes and is with a faculty member and MD student. There are 5 standard questions they will ask.

Will they ask any questions besides the standard five? Is the asynchronous MMI similar to the Casper test, where you don’t get a chance to redo if you mess up or misspeak?

I have not had my interview yet, so I'm not completely sure. It seems like it is supposed to be more conversational so I'm sure they might ask some follow up questions.

Yes, you cannot retake the async videos. Once you click on the question the 5 minute countdown starts.

I am aware of the delays due to the application changes UMN admissions are implementing, but do we know if they still plan on sending out final decisions starting in the next few days as stated on the website?

At the 10/15 interview they told us that the AdComm won’t be meeting until the end of October, and that we would hopefully start hearing back in November.

When you look at threads from a few years ago, everyone would announce their IIs. I guess our cohort is different LOL
