Welp, that’s that.
Dear PREFERREDFIRSTNAME:
We have received many emails from several people that were placed on the waitlist for the UCSD School of Medicine, and I'm sure many others that haven't reached out are also wondering about what to expect going forward. I apologize if we haven't sent individual replies to your inquiries.
At this point, our class is full, and we are nearing our "Commit to Enroll" (CTE) date of Monday, June 2. Once we pass the CTE date, applicants that have committed to UCSD will not be able to receive offers from other school. Thus, this means that we will only be able to make new offers if one our incoming students is granted a deferral to begin in 2025, or if somebody simply decides they don't want to attend medical school.
I can tell you from experience that this does happen sometimes, but it is not a common occurrence. I would not yet tell anybody that there is no chance. But the reality is that, based on the low likelihood of a spot opening, and the number of waitlisted applicants, the chances for any single applicant receiving an offer is low.
We are aware of the time pressure many applicants have with CTE dates from schools where you have received an offer - thus, if we do have a spot open up, we will act as quickly as possible to make a new offer, usually the same day. We also understand that others may be considering re-applying for the 2026 cycle.
We do not plan to formally make any cuts to that waitlist at this time and so if you as asking us to make a final decision prior to a specific deadline you have, all we can say is that if you haven't received an offer from us by your deadine, then by default our answer is that we won't be able to make an offer to you.
I understand this process is not easy. From our end, we are faced with an immense mismatch between the number of outstanding applicants and our capacity to accept them all, and we must make some difficult decisions.
I hope this information helps you plan, whether if means moving forward with another offer, or if you are thinking of re-applying.
Sincerely,
Brian Zeglen (he/him)
