2024-2025 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hate to make this forum all about admitted students haha but do we need to send our transcripts to medical schools individually if we are accepted or just TMDSAS? I sent mine to TMDSAS already but on my UTSW system portal (not the application one) it says that I need to send them to the admissions email. Will this go away once TMDSAS gets them or do I need to send it to UTSW individually as well? I asked on the phone, but the person I talked to wasn't sure if I needed to send to UTSW as well.
You will send it to the school you end up at after match day

Thanks for everyone’s response to my last post!

This is a question that mostly applies to current students but if anyone else knows about this feel free to share: do y’all have any information or tips on what to do to secure housing? Like what are the best or most affordable places that students tend to go for and/or is it best to go secure it ASAP?

MedPark forsure. It is cheaper and closer to school. It is subsidized housing and I think you have to get on the waitlist way in advance. From what my current MS2 peers have said, try to get on the waitlist closer to December/January. But if anything just call the leasing office to give you a better time estimate to apply

if we wait until after match day (2/14), are we unlikely to get housing there?

Its $25 application fee or something like that if you are willing to forgo if you end up elsewhere. Not sure if they let you apply this early or not.

They do, but if you happen to get housing there (off the waitlist) you've gotta pay a $150 nonrefundable deposit. So $175 is a little bit out of my budget right now, haha.

Not certain they will just ask you to deposit money before match day for someone who wont be coming until July next year. You can always ask the question. You could always wait until January when you have a better picture of where you might want to go.

it was on Nov 21st last cycle but it could obviously be a completely different day they release decisions this year

Any interview advice from people who already interviewed here?
Both interviews will be with faculty, they don't do student interviews to my knowledge. I haven't seen them use any singular mandatory question like other schools. If they try to stress test you and ask you brain teasers, ethical questions, or questions to try and throw you off, just remain calm. When you sign the interview agreement thing, it shows you who will interview you. Do with that information what you will.

I interviewed last week and I would recommend to not expect a casual conversation. My interviewers were definitely more reserved and didn't show emotion to my responses, but the questions themselves were not terrible, quite basic I felt. Though I do feel it depends on the interviewer.

Yea it definitely depends on your interviewers and the conversation. Mine started off reserved and then it became casual over time. Overall just be natural and know your application and how to answer normal interview questions.

That's valid. I have a friend last cycle that tried to leverage their full ride to Baylor to get money from Southwestern- no dice. I guess I won't be trying then 😅
Two years ago one of my friends leveraged their full ride to McGovern and got UTSW to follow suit. N = 1, but figured you'd want to know!

They are not sending acceptances based on ones interview date, they release every few weeks to choose some from the entire pool.
Does our chance of admission drop after each passing wave of acceptances? I’m OOS for reference.

OOS admissions have never been very clear in terms of whether they all get prematched early on or if they are giving some in each cycle. Only thing for certain is these are not as flexible since they will stop at 10% and someone has to drop before someone else gets admitted.

This gets real tricky because if you are admitted to 5 schools in Texas, you can keep all 5 until May 1st unlike a Texan who is restricted to one after match day. So if they filled all the seats at some point, they may not admit anyone until after May 1st.

I felt like both of mine were pretty chill (one interviewer was a bit more personable and easy to talk to, but both were fine), although I've heard from at least one of my classmates that theirs was less casual/more difficult, so I definitely think it depends on the luck of the draw.

I'll add that the MS1 class is actually a handful of students smaller this year than normal because of this limit vandy mentioned.

One of the deans said more people (a decent # OOS) chose to attend elsewhere super late in the cycle than was expected and there wasn't enough time for them to accept enough students to fill every spot. It's a very real restriction that impacts who gets offers and when.

I was under the impression those last minute vacancies usually go to instate people who have zero admissions. Heard stories in the past about people getting admitted a week before classes started because of such openings. Too bad UTSW has unfilled seats because OOS students dropped out late.

I agree, there would have been some interviewed but unmatched Texans thrilled to take a last minute offer from UTSW 🤔

Hi! I just interviewed utsw last wed and Im not sure about how it went. My first interview seemed okay but my second interviewer was a lot more reserved and also direct with his questions. Although nothing terrible happened during my second interview, I don't have a good feeling about it because my interviewer was very curt and didn't react to a lot of my answers 🙁 I was wondering if anyone from past cycles had a similar experience?

Very common and very dependent on the personality of each interviewer, plus the personality of each interviewee. We don't hit it off with each person we meet, you know?

Take this with as much salt or sugar as you please, but I've had many, many friends who were accepted to UTSW and I'd say 70-80% of them reported their interviews being similar to this! It's not a reflection on you, like what wysdoc said, and you're more than likely still in the running 🙂)

ahh thanks this gives me hope!

Interviews like that are good since they are assessing you seriously.

Does anyone know how many acceptances does utsw send out each year? Or like is there any websites where I can look this up?

I don’t believe these exact figures are published - what we can see published is on the MSAR site as total # of applicants, # interviewed and # matriculated.
Because there are some students who turn down an offer of admission for a variety of reasons, the number of offers made is larger than the number of matriculants.

this happened to me too, I felt both of my interviewers were reserved, and I definitely think it is just their personality. Whether you connect with your interviewer or not is the least reliable factor to base the success of an interview on.

I interviewed at UTSW on Oct 26th (about a week a half ago). Is their turn-around rate pretty quick, or am I going to have to wait a couple of months to hear back? Just wondering so I can stop checking this forum, wondering if they might be accepting from my interview date 😅

more likely a wait of longer than that. If they accept you they will send you an email

They are not rolling admissions. They release few prematches every month and these will include all interviewees.

Does going to the informational sessions have any affect on admission?
Will adcoms be in the meeting or will the med students give presentations?

Also do the applicants have their cameras on or off during these sessions?
