Auburn c/o 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't think we do - at least, I haven't been able to find it.
I tried looking too, I couldn't find one either. And originally I also wanted to do a trailer. That's definitely the best bet if you are planning to have lots of pets, especially large breed dogs. However, I have a friend that's a current student and she's heard of a few break ins in the trailer parks, and technically AL is moderate risk state for tornadoes so those would be the only downsides I think. But plenty of people do it!

I have 2 large dogs so hoping that deters any break-ins, LOL!!! Planning on going a day or two before the Open House to check out some housing options 🙂

Hey all potential c/o 2019ers!! I have heard auburn classes can be real cliquey, like reallyyyy cliquey.... This worries me and i love auburn but i dont want a class like that! Anyone agree!? Let's make c/o 2019 super supportive and non-cliquey where everyone is friendly and helps everyone else out!! If i sound crazy someone can tell me, and then ill figure out somewhere else to go haha i just hate high school atmospheres and dramatic ppl... And i want to know if i choose auburn that it wont be like that for our class!! One big family is all i want to be apart of, not an immaturely named clique

I think that's how a lot of vet school classes are, unfortunately. I know my class here is like that and it sucks. It's kind of just what happens when you see the same people all day every day, and the classes are majority girls -_-

Ugh dang i reallyyy cannot stand that scene! Guys are so much more laid back and chill--this is why vet school needs more guys to balance out the crazy ppl!

This. I think the atmosphere in vet school makes it super easy to gravitate toward cliques, regardless of which vet school you're at. This being said, it does vary with your class a bit, some are more cliquey than others, some are more closer-knit than others.

I gotcha, well that's unfortunate... I mean i get having a group of close friends but no need to nickname yourselves ridiculous things and have a sense of entitlement as opposed to an attitude of "we're all stuck in this together, let's help each other out".. Blows my mind that at our age and our professional level of schooling, girls can still act like that...

Yes, sometimes the drama makes me think I've stepped back in time to high school... though on the other hand, 99.8% of my class 99% of the time is very approachable and has the "We are in this together." attitude. So for my class at least, the drama is normally between a few people at a time, and usually only really shows up when we are super stressed out.

Same, there's a select group of people that are extremely cliquey but most people are nice and willing to help everyone out. I do often feel like I'm in high school though haha. It's a feeling that I had been glad to be done with in undergrad, and it's disappointing that it's back again for four years...

I hope it's not crazy clique-y!! I graduated with my Bachelor's in 2008 so I'll be the old lady in the Auburn C/O 2019 ;-)

Sooooo for those of you who have accepted your offer - where are you living? Does anyone have any insight into the different areas of town? Slightly nervous bc I'm coming from Chicago and am sooooo unfamiliar w the area. Also I've got 2 big dogs, so finding a dog-friendly place is a must! Tempted to buy a trailer but also terrified by that thought!

I havent made my full decision yett... but i am leaning towards AU. I feel the same way about living in the trailer, maybe ill do an apartment complex my first year and a trailer second yr? I have a dog too ..except i have a smaller australian shepherd.. idk what apartments are spacious/pet friendly -- if anyone knows?

v0712, I found quite a few apartment complexes that are pet-friendly (for smaller dogs or one dog) when doing my Google Searches, so you'll probably be fine 🙂 ... unfortunately my dogs are large sooooo I'm SOL ;-) --- will be heading down to check out housing options at the end of the month. SO excited about Auburn and dying for more info from the CVM so I can start any other planning I need to!

Reptilequeen2015, On the tour, they said exotics is the only program they aren't super strong in so I don't believe they have a large focus on it.

Hey to all those current students at auburn.. What kinds of hands on experience can i get my first year? I really want a program that gives that to you right off the bat.. Like physical exams and what not.. Can someone explain what years 1-3 are like hands-on and surgery experience wise? I really would want to go to auburn but i am not sure if the curriculum is hands on enough but i just dont know anything about it! Could someone also tell me, are classes mandatory now?

Hands-on opportunities aren't the greatest in our curriculum - you spend the first 2.5 years predominantly in the classroom/lab (as with any veterinary program, it comes with signing up for 4 years of school). You start physical diagnosis lab in the second semester of your first year and continue them through the first semester of second year. You can also take on hands-on electives starting second semester, but they all contain classroom portions some days. What most students do is get involved with clubs...if you join a few clubs in areas that you're interested in (there's clubs for equine, bovine, surgery, sports medicine, emergency care, exotics, etc) you will get the opportunity to do labs in the after hours (yes you'll be busy, but yes you'll be able to make time for extra stuff). There are usually several hours of those labs a week.

And yeah, we cliqued off amazingly quickly. It's pretty silly, especially early on, but we all still get along (for the most part).

Ohhh, and you start surgery and anesthesia labs second semester of second year, and continue that until clinics. So you spend some afternoons doing spays/neuters on shelter dogs or running anesthesia.

Thanks for the input, Chocl8luva! Where do you recommend living? Any places to check out or to stay away from?

How many full spays/neuters do you get before 4th year? And are you able to do any other surgeries before then, like terminal or anything?

Do we know what laptop we are supposed to buy yet? Because mine has been on its way out for awhile and is now in the final stages of dying. Really need to replace it, but can't do so until I know what we are supposed to get. 😏

Haven't heard - dying to get more info from them!

Accepted my offer, so officially in for Auburn class of 2019! I emailed and called to accept. for anyone who accepted, did you get a confirmation that you accepted? I'm wondering when I should call the other schools to decline!

I didn't get anything "official"-seeming, but Miss Kaye responded with "Glad you will be joining us at Auburn. It will be a great experience." .... personally, I would call the other schools to decline ASAP to open up those spots for other students. Auburn isn't going to rescind your offer for admission, I wouldn't think!

Also - congrats! Looking forward to next year!

I sent the email yesterday but haven't gotten a reply yet! How quickly did they get back to you? I just want to ensure they got it before I call the other schools, just in case!

I understand that. She got back to me almost immediately - BUT I responded the day after I got the call. Auburn was my #1 (once I visited) and I am SO excited!!!

Yeah I also got an email back within probably 20 minutes after accepting.

Whoopwhoop!!!! Congrats!!!

I got an email today, officially in the class of 2019!
I accepted my offer today and heard back from Kaye within an hour. Besides welcoming me to Auburn, she said that she will be busy with Alabama and Kentucky interviews for the next month and that I shouldn't expect to hear from her again until May. I don't know if that just means I won't be hearing from her personally, or that the school will not be sending the class of 2019 any additional information until then. Was your email an informal email from Kaye, or was it more official with information regarding the deposit and what to do next? Either way, I'm so excited to start! After visiting Auburn and touring the beautiful, state-of-the-art hospital, it was by far my #1

Mine was SUPER informal - basically "yay, welcome to Auburn!" and not having more info is totally stressing me out but I'm excited!!!

Auburn does not require a deposit of any kind. I believe first payment is not due until the summer.

Does anyone know when we will be hearing anything else? Has anyone gotten any information since sending in their acceptance?

They'll send you all the information on them...you pay for the computer and program and get it in your vet school orientation. I came off the waitlist in the late summer, so I didn't pay for mine along with everyone else. They'll let you know! They'll just let you know later.

How many full spays/neuters do you get before 4th year? And are you able to do any other surgeries before then, like terminal or anything?

You do all of your surgeries with a partner and a LOT of supervision so it's not exactly "full". Two spay/neuter-before-adoption second year, more (not really sure how many, but there's 3-4 times the number of labs) third year.

I haven't heard a lot of terrible things about any place. There's several trailer parks (they're not as terrible as everyone imagines, good investment and easy to have your critters) and apartment complexes very close to the school. Crossland Downs (appartements), Avalon, and Stonegate (trailer parks) are good, but there's other nice places!

Does anyone know if Auburn has a good exotics program?

Not really. We have an awesome raptor center and you can get involved there after hours first year thru clinics, and you can do an optional rotation there. I know they are trying to set up a program in the new hospital, but I don't know when that will be debuting. Most people that are interested get involved in the very active exotics club, with the student run turtle rescue, with the raptor center, and use their summers/externships/preceptorships to get experience elsewhere.

@Chocl8luva - do you know approx when we would be receiving more info? For example, what laptop to purchase, when we need to be there for orientation, etc.?

I came in off the waitlist late, so I'm not quite sure when everybody else purchased their computer, but you buy it through Auburn, pay before coming in, and get it during orientation. Orientation is a series of events for first years the week before actual classes start...so usually the first or second week of August.

Anybody know when the IS / KY students are interviewing / will find out if they got in? I assume once the class has been set is when we'll hear more ... (Can you tell I'm anxious? LOL!)

My email was very brief and just said they're still finalizing the class, most likely wouldn't hear from them until after April 15, and there was nothing else I needed to do at this time!

I'm a KY resident and I interviewed March 16th. I think all interviews for Alabama and KY residents were within that week of March 16-March 20th. Kaye told us we would be notified by this Friday at the latest, but we will actually probably hear Wednesday! Fingers crossed 🙂

Well, my IS interview is tomorrow, so they're definitely not finished yet. 🙂 Not sure if that affects Kaye's estimate for decisions by Friday.

Update: Kaye said at my interview today that we'll hear by the end of this week, and as early as Thursday if everything goes smoothly.

Does anyone know how it works with the trailer parks? I have been checking around for housing, and I'm having a difficult time. My first choice, crossland downs, appears to have no availability. I hear that many students purchase trailers from graduating seniors, and I would like to know how all of that works. Any input on cost of purchasing, how to get in contact with student selling etc?

I think Crossland Downs is a condo complex ... I'm looking into the trailer parks as well, and will be heading down from Chicago on Sunday to look in person and can let you know. If anyone else has good advice, would definitely be appreciated!

Yeah, my preference is definitely a condo, but options seem to be limited. So I guess my next best option is a trailer. Let me know how it goes! Wish I was going!

I'm slightly terrified. Everyone keeps telling me "there are nice trailers" and "it's not the same thing as trailer parks around here".....hoping that is the case!

I was waitlisted 🙁. Do you guys know if they'll let alternates know if a position opens up before April 15th? Auburn is my first choice and where I would get in-state tuition, but I do not want to turn down the one other school that accepted me (Illinois) unless I know for sure there is a spot for me at Auburn. Gahhh I don't know what to do. Illinois requires a 500 dollar deposit too. Should I go ahead and send that or wait to see if Auburn lets me know before April 15th?
