Campbell University (CUSOM) DIscussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got an interview invite for January 15th!!! I'm so excited! I had completely given up hope on this school and was disappointed because this was one of my top choice schools. Does anyone know approximately how many spots are left?

Are there people who were placed on Hold and then granted interview? Just wanted to know how long does it take to grant an interview after placing on hold.
Hey,

I was placed on hold for my fall grades to come in. I sent out my fall grades on December 20th, and I just got a call yesterday (because they had a cancellation). I am interviewing on Monday 1/7/13

Also, I originally submitted my secondary on Oct 19th, and was placed on hold on Nov 8th.
Hope this helps.

The email only stated the start time of the interview.
I received an email that stated the breakdown of the day (ie, arrive at 8 am, interviews 9:30-11 am, etc.) along with a link to a survey. Pretty sure you'll be getting that, maybe closer to your interview?

Congrats to those receiving invites and acceptances! CUSOM is going to be a strong program with great faculty, facilities and resources. If anyone has any questions or things to process about the school feel free to PM me

So I only have enough money for one more interview, and it's between LECOM erie and Campbell. I honestly am really excited for Campbell and think I would be a great fit. I also think Lecom is great, but am not quite as stoked about it. The big thing that's making this decision tough is that CUSOM is a new school, and I'm worried that my board scores might be deficient. I'm thinking since I'm already going to be a DO and have to deal with discrimination and all that, why make it harder on myself by going to a brand new school? Anyways, I'm hoping someone could give me some advice on this situation? Why are you choosing Campbell vs. other more established schools?

Hey Mattinthehat250,
I interviewed at Campbell yesterday and was immensely impressed. The Dr who is creating the curriculum has helped start the curriculum at 5 other schools, and he created the 3 styles of learning offered at LECOM at Erie. In addition, he is 1 of 12 Physicians that are called in to help schools that are struggling. We learned a lot about him before the interview, but he also interviewed me, and he even gave me some tips on my studying techniques during the interview to make me more efficient. Basically, I am not at all worried that they are a new school because of how much support and effort they are putting into the place. So, basically, I would just choose a school that you feel fits your values, or the one you feel you have the best shot of getting in. Hope this helps...

If your desire is to be a DO based on the different training that DOs receive and the way they view patients, you will have a fulfilling career and discrimination can come with that territory (though the gap of DO/MD bias, I believe, is shrinking.) If you desire to be an MD, I would honestly tell you to take another year and do whatever you need to do to be a more competitive applicant for MD schools. Please don't become a DO because you can't become a MD.

LECOM is cheaper but also has a bunch of students in each class. CUSOM will have 150 and being that this is a new program, they are going to pour into us. I wouldn't worry too much about board pass rates: I honestly think this lies more in the hands of the student then the program. I canceled my interview at LECOM Bradenton (with a 100% pass rate on step one) after CUSOM's acceptance because I can tell the program will be solid. I took the MCAT twice and I have committed to myself there is no way I am going to take the boards twice!

You also bring up a good point about the cost of interviews... In deciding your future school also think about the cost of rotations. I decided on CUSOM because the 3rd and 4th year rotations are completed at a CORE rotation site = minimal moving/driving/flying = saving lots of money in the long run. I believe LECOM has rotations in multiple states, I am unaware as to if you will remain in that state or not for your rotations years though.

How many folks have accepted their spots? Did they give any numbers?
Who is this Dr you are talking about?

I did not ask how many have accepted, and they did not offer numbers. Someone earlier in December had said they have offered 100 spots. I am just waiting anxiously to see if I get a call on Friday. Sorry I cannot help anymore.
Dr. Mahalik is the doctor I am talking about.

Thanks for the insight. I am definitely interested in becoming a DO and CUSOM seems like it will be a great school, while Lecom is also a great school. I guess the biggest thing that concerns me is not necessarily the board scores, but rather the opinion of program directors when it comes time to apply for residency. Will they be less likely to match me if I come from a school they have never heard of? I guess no one can answer for sure, and I'm sure that the great rotation sites Campbell has set up will mitigate this problem to an extent.

'Beg borrow or steal' the money and go to both. Compare spending $1k on an interview with all of the costs (actual and opportunity) and heartache having to go thru this again.

How, long after emailing your secondary, did it take to receive confirmation that it was received?

Found this out last week, but I have an interview here on the 19th! I'm pretty pumped for this one, CUSOM seems to be a pretty good fit for what I'm looking for in a med school. I've already had 2 interviews at other schools which led to 2 waitlists, so naturally I'm pretty nervous about this one. Any tips from anyone who interviewed already?

Check out past posts, there are a variety of helpful tips that have been posted! The general consensus seems to be that it's very laid back with little to no curveballs in the interviews (there are 3). Good luck!!

Got my acceptance call from Joy. I am stoked to be a member of the first class 🙂

👍 Welcome to the class! And when you are done celebrating feel free to join the facebook group!

can you send me a link to the facebook group? can't seem to find it.

I have an interview at CUSOM this week! I understand that there are three 1:1 interviews. For those who have already interviewed, who were you interviewed by (e.g., teaching faculty, dean, etc.)? Please feel free to PM me. Thanks for your help!

Search this thread. I've answered this question before...

You can search for more recent feedback like CRC said
but when I interviewed it was the leadership including the Dean
that they have listed on their website (check it out). They have
hired more faculty since then though so I can't say with confidence at this point. Good luck!

Interview!

So what is the actual 1:1 interview like? Do they just want to get to know you? Do they highlight weak points of your application and put you on the spot? A bit of both?

Also, their website says they prefer people from the apalachian region, and they put emphasis on rural medicine... I'm from a big city in CA..will this come up at all? (I ask because my last interview was also at an apalachian, rural school and about half the interview was me defending why a city slicker from California would want to go there.)

No, they don't put you on the spot. They didn't highlight my weak points of my application, but I'm sure it varies. I interviewed with some of the faculty members. They are trying to fill the gaps for rural medicine in NC (as you will see). So, if you discuss that you're interested in practicing in rural medicine in NC, I'm sure you'll be fine. They also want to know what makes you stand out above the rest in regards to being a part of the inaugural class.

I am also from California, and I was accepted. They just prefer from the NC region because they prefer to train doctors that will stay and help in the area. You will need to answer "why NC, why Campbell" so if you have a good honest answer to that, then you will be just fine

For those who brought up prayer earlier in the thread...

"Although prayer is not a requirement for student life at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, our experience has shown that many students choose to do so around exam time."

interview =]

Some questions..

- About how many interviewees are at each interview?

- Someone mentioned something about each interviewee giving an introduction at the beginning of the interview day? Should we have a 2 minute intro prepared or is it just basically "Hi my name is_____" ?

-What is the dress code?

At my interview there were 18 interviewees split up into groups of 9. Not necessary at all to have an introduction prepared, everything is very low key and relaxed. Dress code, if you're a guy suit and tie, if you're a girl business attire. Look sharp and professional.

When were you complete!!? And which day specifically did you get the II!?

Wake Forest University
Overall: 3.069
Science: 3.25
MCAT: 10 Verbal/ 9 Bio/ 8 Physics

UNCG --- Post-Bacc
4.15 out of 4.3 Fall 2012
4.0 Science

Thanks, it makes me feel a little better! My sGPA right now is about 3.0 and cGPA is 3.3 (UNC Chapel Hill), but my grades have been upward trend (also in the face of horrible circumstances). I plan on going post-bac for orgo and physics, which I have yet to take. Crossing fingers I'll get A's and be fine! Oh, and a good MCAT!

Yes I struggled initially at Wake, but my last 3 semesters I made at least a 3.7 while taking upper level Biology and Chemistry Classes. And if you count the classes a re-took (3 science classes), then my science GPA is lower.

I think they look at the last 4 semesters because after turning in my secondary, I was placed on hold until they got my grades from the post-bacc, and after they received them in December I interviewed in January and was accepted.

Just really focus on orgo because it will kick you in the butt.
So, have you applied this year or are you waiting a year?

I'm waiting a year. I am going to study part time in the fall and spring and take orgo and physics at the same time, do volunteer work, etc. and work a part time job..I think it may take me 2 cycles to get in so I can really prove myself but I am willing to do it!

Undergrad:
Cumulative = 3.45
Science = 3.39

Grad: 3.9

MCAT: 10/11/11

I got in with cgpa-3.4, sgpa-3.7, 25S.
I'm also an ER scribe in a small community hospital which I think really helped during the interview.

Accepted, here are my stats:
3.4 cGPA, 3.25 sGPA, 27Q MCAT
Pretty good ECs; ties to NC

If I am from a small town but attend UNC, and plan to go back home to practice medicine will that give me the leg up (since they prefer people who want to practice in rural areas)? Or will attending a large university make me seem like I am just trying to be who they want me to be?

You're overthinking it. Universities are often not rural so going to UNC doesn't make one question your commitment. The fact you are a NC resident or from a rural town AND have an interest in rural med makes you a great fit for the mission of CUSOM. 🙂
