Campbell University (CUSOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well peeps post stats like its the full picture and that means little. Especially when somebody gets rejected and they gripe but may of taken credits at a community college, etc..Wanted to offer some details. It's not a sob story lol. A thread with only acceptances and stats offers little.

I dont know what you're talking about. But I know if you stated during your interview or application that an MD did OMT...... you clearly do no know what you're talking about. Unless MDs are going into osteopathic manipulation medicine programs, which I never heard of.......

How long does it take them to contact you for scheduling an interview? I got the II on 11/2 but haven't received any call about scheduling my interview?

Interesting. I was under the assumption that the vast majority was using roman numerals. Thanks for the update.

Sorry to hear about the rejection. It sounds like your stats and EC's are good. There must be some reason behind it. It may be a good idea to contact the schools to request feedback on your application to find out what the issue is. Some schools will, some won't. Good luck with the rest of the application cycle!

firstly, there are classes for MDs to learn OMM. Secondly, he is apart of the Osteopathy and cranial academy from his OMM training. He does 100% OMM in his sports medicine clinic. He was trained by D.Os. I'm not going to post his website, but it goes at length to discuss osteopathy, muscle energy techniques, and restoring somatic function. Like it or not, but he is in the 1% and there are work arounds in regards to billing through ICD codes. I was lucky and had to travel out of state to shadow him. It was a unique opportunity because he was able to more appropriately discuss the differences between MD vs DO.

I did discuss that during my interview and she said she was aware of the opportunities for MDs to learn. But she did seem surprised (because it is very uncommon). Anyways, I just wanted to provide an account of its not all about the numbers. I know my numbers aren't stellar, but I was above average. If I was given a deans scholarship, I would've gone there. But at full tuition I would've stuck with KCOM. Thanks those for the advice post rejection.

I think your numbers and experiences look amazing, way above average for this school. Maybe that's why they rejected you?? They may have assumed that you'll get accepted to more established programs anyways..but at the same time, I was told that this years applicant pool has higher stats overall. So maybe they're aiming higher this year..no clue. Just wondering if this strategy bears the risk of not being able to fill the class at the end of the cycle..but what do I know!!! I'm new to this whole thing 🙂

Did anyone else get a Tshirt in the mail, and a congratulations card, foe getting accepted to CUSOM? I just got one, and didnt know they did that, thats pretty cool!

Yeah! Just more proof that I made the right choice 🙂

I decided to call them yesterday and was told that they call based off the order approved by the admissions committee so it basically means they rank how quickly they want to interview you. Was also told that december interview dates are full and that the schedule for january interviews is not out yet but will be available in one to two weeks and thats when they will make phone calls to schedule those interviews. Just more waiting at this point.

Thanks! I was wondering if I'd missed their call or something. Btw I'm assuming the phone number they will use to call me will be a North Carolina area code?

If you receive a scholarship after acceptance, would it be revoked if your cumulative or science gpa falls below a 3.50 before matriculation?
The letter does not mention anything aboout grades pre-acceptance. It only says that you have to maintain a 3.3 med school GPA and abide by the honor code. If you are placed on probation it will be revoked. Thats it.

I am seriously considering CUSOM as well. Its between CUSOM and LECOM-B? I am seriously hoping for a scholarship from CUSOM so my decision will be easier, did you hear about it yet?? Also what made you chose CUSOM?

It was just the whole package. The faculty was among the best and most supportive, the facilities are state-of-the-art, the first-year board scores were fairly impressive, Campbell University has a good track record in general (law school frequently has higher bar pass rates than duke and unc), there are substantial scholarship opportunities, the area is absolutely beautiful, it is close to several larger NC cities as well as OBX and DC, and housing is very affordable. More than anything, though, was the lack of negative factors. Other than the fact that it is still new, there were no glaring defects in the school, a novelty among those I interviewed at.
I also had the difficult choice of LECOM-B vs CUSOM, among others. I went with Campbell because it's just a class act altogether and I love the area. I haven't heard if I'll receive the scholarship but I have high hopes that I will. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks so much for your response, I have a feeling I will receive it too, but I am strongly leaning towards CUSOM, my aunt actually lives in Raleigh so I have visited a lot of times and love NC, I also was in love with the facilities and the staff. I may be at CUSOM next year 🙂!!

Two questions: How are OOS students looked upon and what sort of timeline to receive secondary, etc?
More than half the class this year is OOS, so I'd say they're looked upon just fine lol. The school does want people to stay in NC after graduation, so there is probably a slight bias towards people who seem like they're more inclined to stay in NC, or in rural areas in general.
After being accepted at KCOM and others, got rejected from this school post interview as an NC resident w/ 3.7c,3.7s(straight A's in pre-reqs) and the equivalent of a 27-28 MCAT on the new exam after a 25 retake. All credits at four year university. Was also told during one of the three interviews that I interviewed well. EMT with now 1,000+ clinical hours. Volunteer tutor 55hrs, 40 hrs shadowing (25 from an MD who did OMM strictly), 160 hour quality and patient safety internship. 6 LORs; one from DO, one from MD, 3 professors, one pre-med committee LOR. Discussed interest in family med. it was a safety school (required attendance, dress code, new school status, and rotation sites are cons for me) so perhaps they saw through that during one of the interviews, OR they have jumped up in competitiveness. Also, I'm an EMT who actively brings PTs to the E.D where CUSOM students rotate, so I do know a decent amount about 1/3 of the student rotation sites. This is an impressive school overall, despite my cons... and I was bummed with the rejection because it did jump up in my school list post interview. Good luck all.
I have no idea why you weren't accepted, but your stats and application looks good on paper. Applications have increased this year a significant amount, and probably someone saw something wrong with fit. This school will definitely reject high scoring applicants if they are a poor fit. Personally, I think this is a good thing, but it still sucks. Congrats on your other acceptances, I'm sure you'll do great next year.

I'm not on the adcom, I don't have exact numbers, but if you really want to know you could always try calling and asking. They said at one point in block one (around Sept) that they had a lot more applications at that time then they did at the same time last year and that they anticipated the number of total applications to reach about 6k. Obviously, is not verifiable until numbers are actually released for this year's cycle. I don't really think it's a lie, although it may be optimistic, because it was during a small group meeting with the Dean.

Just for perspective, here are the numbers for the last two cycles: http://www.aacom.org/docs/default-source/cib/2016_applications_enrollment_grads.pdf?sfvrsn=4
Statistically, last year, CUSOM was as competitive as DMUCOM, RowanCOM, KCUCOM, UNECOM, VCOM...

I got that and a bobble head camel in a white coat after my deposit
I got a t shirt a couple weeks ago also! I thought that was pretty neat. Would love to see a bobble head sometime soon, too cute 🙂

They gave me XL, did they think I was fat or something lol? It barely fits me, I need to wash it 3 times so I can atleast fit it lol

I have an acceptance here and one of my pre-reqs is lower than the "C" minimum. Do you guys think I have to re-take the course to keep my acceptance? I really do not want to do this since its a 1st year course and I'm in my senior year -__- Anyone else in the same situation?

I dont think its a big deal, they accepted you already so i dont think it would matter, unless they highlighted that in your acceptance letter that you need to retake, I would contact Joyce just in case. Did you get the C after the acceptance? if so you might have to take it before you matriculate!

Just declined my acceptance offer here. Hopefully it goes to one of you! Good Luck!!

Just received the scholarship invite! Has anyone received it and NOT been offered the scholarship after the paper they ask you to write? It seems like everyone who has posted about the scholarship has received it. I certainly hope that trend continues!

My assumption was that you need to fill out the paperwork in order to receive the scholarship.
I wish I had that opportunity 🙁 so congrats!

Also, see social desirability bias.

Did you receive it in the mail or email? Congratssss!!

It's true, I'm probably just seeing sampling error in here. Those who didn't receive it had no incentive to post on here about it, while those who did posted frequently.

I received it in the mail....so be on the lookout for the postman if you were accepted within the last couple of weeks!

*And give the postman a hug if you see a letter from CUSOM...there could be $40 to 80 K in there 😉

You guys can email them to ask them for a shirt your size if you like.

I am seriously considering accepting my offer to CUSOM but I just want to get a better understanding from some current students. Does the required lecture affect any of you? Does it hurt you? Benefit you? I know from personal experience in Undergrad that I learn better from just listening to the recordings. What about the required dress code?I know that may be silly to some people but if I am being forced to go to lecture every day at 8 AM after (many) long nights of studying and I have to put on a shirt and tie each time.....To me it just seems silly. Are you allowed to wear scrubs to class instead of dress clothes?

Did you get the shirt after you made the deposit? I only received a card in the mail

Growing more excited each day closer to my interview date!

This school is so awesome they sent me a "Campbell Medicine" shirt before I put down a deposit. They are really tempting me to possibly attend with all their pros.
