Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Zuku has a free extension of my subscription IF I finished at least 80% of the practice tests and IF I needed to retake, so I spent most of the days before my test date doing practice tests so I can make the 80% mark just in case....

I'm glad I don't have to use their extension 😊 and I'd like to think the 80% practice tests had paid off 😉😉

Congrats to everyone who passed!!!

And hugs to anyone who didn’t. It doesn’t reflect on your future ability to be a good doctor, it just means you’re unlucky enough to have to go through the awful standardized testing experience again. Give yourself time to be sad, then start making plans. I believe in you! You made it this far!!! :biglove:

Follow up:
I did 22% -- and 8% of that was in the last few days leading up to the NAVLE. So every time someone would say "oh gosh, I have only done 40% or 50%, I'm so behind"... I was thinking:

Also, for anyone who is worried about this in the future, I was averaging about 65% on the vet prep tests towards the end.

But, turns out that was enough 😉

:heckyeah:
Oh hey our stats are pretty similar

when it’s been almost a week since the match application closed and some of the hospitals that “will contact you to schedule an interview after the application has closed” still haven’t contacted you.
The hospital I matched at didn’t even start going through applications until like a week or two before lists were due. Whether in private practice or academia, there are a lot of demands on specialists time and honestly, choosing interns ends up being low priority for many specialists when there’s actual sick patients and paperwork, current trainees, and your outside working priorities demanding your time too. I wouldn’t worry too much...there’s like a month before their rank lists are due? I definitely remember the nerves and uncertainty surrounding the whole process but it’s early on. I didn’t even interview at the place I matched to. But best of luck to everyone waiting to match!

That’s comforting at least! I was worried that it meant I wasn’t qualified enough for their internship (even though I’ve had several reach out to me already) I was just v concerned

Honestly I wish some of the places I applied went through everything later! I have something like 6 interviews in the next 3 weeks. I think they have more time to go through stuff because the programs I applied to probably don't have as many applicants as a typical SA Rotating would have

Good luck!!!

Do you guys feel like more students than normal are applying for internships from your class than normal? That's the sense I'm getting from my class.

SO MANY

Also, the top ~50% of my class has a GPA > 3.8 something lolololololol

It's one of the reasons why I didn't. Without factoring clinics into grades, I can't compete with that.

I feel like there's a lot but they're also people I know who have always wanted to go into specialty or into a field like equine where internships are strongly encouraged if not expected. Not sure if I've run into many people who intended to go out into private practice who leaned into internship instead. I have quite a few classmates who already have GP jobs lined up after school, and several pursuing some of those newer ER Pathways programs where they kind of treat it like an internship but gradually scale up your pay over time as you get more training or something confusing

This is what I'm seeing. People who have every intention of going into private practice following their internship. Most seem to be doing it because we missed 4 months of clinics outright and then have the augmented clinics in hospital. So I was wondering if this is a thing elsewhere

I'm sure there are and I just either haven't run into them or haven't chatted with them about it. But it is also one of those things where I feel like it's really a confidence issue, like you might as well go out into practice and get your ass kicked for the first year like every other new grad, while getting paid rather than doing the same exact thing for a third of the salary without any clear benefit.

I don't. I mean I don't know what the normal number is but the ones I know applying for internships are the same people who were always planning to.

I almost feel like there are more people in my class that are wanting to specialize and are therefore applying for internships/residencies than I thought there would be. I'm not sure if that was their original goal or not when they started veterinary school or if the pandemic influenced that. I was talking to a director at an institution and he made a comment that the numbers are up when the economy is down when it comes to VIRMP applications so I thought that was interesting. That was in lab animal so not sure if that applies to the other specialties or not. I will be so excited when this process is finished! I applied widely bc I didn't know how my app was going to be perceived but I've been fortunate to have had 10+ interviews durig my vacation block. Some places are doing a second round of interviews as well. So excited for match day so I hope the next 6 weeks go by fast!

I'm currently at a zoo (last day is tomorrow 🙁 ) and been spending a decent amount of time with giraffe. Today has been especially very giraffey. Can confirm that they are big.

Makes me want to go back to zoo med.
No no only one of us is allowed to have an existential crisis this week

I mean... I honestly don't know what's gonna happen. I could literally end up in Arkansas for the rest of my life. Who knows?
I mean... same. I'm mostly looking at places in Michigan but I'm seriously considering clinics in a couple other states so like... where the hell am I going to be? Where do I license myself? What do I even?

I.... forgot about the whole licensing in specific states. I should figure that out.
Aside from the hellscape that is CA, I'm not bothering until I figure out where the hell I'm landing next year. I'm just hoping to maintain CA licence forever even if I never set foot back in the state.

Sometimes it feels like I need someone to come hold my hand and make sure that I get through the various steps I need to do lest I forget something.
... we have a whole document that outlines everything from a previous class because it's just so damn COMPLICATED

No I’m gonna need the week of February 15-19. That’s midterm week.
You can have that! I need the two weeks prior. I'll be on critical care starting the 15th. Smooth sailing from there!

You don't have to license yourself until you have a job. I worked for about 3 weeks while waiting for mine to arrive. Just had to get another doc to sign my rabies certificates.

Added benefit of waiting: some employers pay your licensing fees.

One of the internships I applied to is in California and I'm waiting to deal with that hot mess if I find out I matched there. They also sent over a very fun document about the process. I'm happy to get things together for it in the meantime but not going to actually apply unless I know I'm going there because as far as I can tell the ~$850 dollars to apply/start the process isn't refundable

But then why do you need thru the 16th if you’re starting CC the 15th what
Meant to put the 15th since I'll still have ortho patient AM shift that Monday. That's what I get for posting on my phone and not reading what my phone-fingers type.

It is not, and I might read the packet because I applied in November and just became eligible to scheduled my exam today...

Oh I mean I've read the packet, just yikes to everything. CA really does screw themselves out of good veterinarians with how hard they make it to get licensed and how long it takes

Well that and they just jumped prices by at least $200 on an emergency measure because "they ran out of money"...
