I'm so sorry that you all believe in the wrong ellipsis. The world is a cruel, dark place.

Random question... what are all of you hoping to do with your DVM degree? I know it's a long time from now and goals will probably change, but I'm just curious!

yes I made an effort to put in an unnecessary ellipsis

Least you made it correctly spaced.

Haven't really thought that far ahead other than private practice. Maybe specialize/academia...but as you said, long time from now :)

Academia, imaging informatics research following a residency in radiology.

Right now I want to do an internship and residency and then specialize in SA surgery and work in a large hospital/ academia to do surgery full time.

But other alternatives I'm thinking of is Emergency/ Critical Care or research. I'm leaning heavily to surgery though.

I know you're probably asking c/o 2021 but I'll answer anyway :p

I want to specialize in zoo medicine. So multiple internships, a residency, and then just hoping a job opens up somewhere...With how competitive that is, my second place dream is feline/exotics private practice with a side of wildlife rehab. It's probably not a thing but I figure I could make it a thing. Maybe throw some shelter med in there.

Who knows where I'll end up though. I used to want to do equine not too long ago...

I really love large animal, cattle and horses especially. I want to go straight to at least a mixed animal practice, but I'd sure like to find a job at a large animal only practice.

I basically have no clue at this point lol. I know I want to practice SA in some form, but between GP and specialty practice? I have no clue. I could totally see myself doing internship/residency but there are definitely things I'd miss about GP (the variety/continuity of care). I guess I'll just see what happens lol

I definitely want to specialize. Right now I want to do small animal surgery. I shadowed a boarded surgeon and it was so much fun. It was a 13 hour day and he was there before and after me, so here's hoping for my masochistic tendencies to stay strong! I also have no idea if I'm capable of maintaining the grades required for such a dream, but that's why they're called dreams right? They have nothing to do with reality.

Twinzzzz! High five for being the ones with masochistic tendencies! :highfive:

I have to have jaw surgery this summer, so I'm not allowed to work for 6 weeks :(, so I'm gonna spend a couple weeks shadowing different vets! I have a huge small animal surgery center in my area so I'm going to politely pester them into letting me shadow there. Also, there's an emergency hospital that my aquatintence works at, and she says that they always are letting people come shadow (so I'll get to experience the SUPER masochism of ECC )

I'm really interested in anatomic pathology and/or lab animal medicine. I'd love to work in academia to teach and do some research in infectious disease. Public health is on my mind as well!

Figured I should chime in as well. I'm hoping to do shelter medicine, but I've considered a lot of different things!

I love hearing about everybody's goals. Keep 'em coming! And of course honorary c/o 2021 thread members are welcome to answer as well :p Should have posted this in a different thread so everyone can see it and answer

Sub Wildlife rehab for zoo as my dream job, and add in some emergency at the end as well and this is me

We can open up our own feline/exotics practice. You get anything that has more than four legs or slithers though.

In a dream world I hope to complete an internship after veterinary school and then specialize in small animal surgery or radiology. I've spent time shadowing and receiving mentorship from an orthopedic specialist that definitely helped shaped some of these goals, but I'm just planning to go in with an open mind! Working in a very busy ER/ICU, I don't think ECC is in my foreseeable future but this is what has peeked my interest in radiology. One of our criticalists told me felt like ECC was not for her when starting veterinary school, too, though. So... who knows for sure! That was a fun question @serher , thanks for asking. I enjoyed the replies!!

Hehe part of the zoo dream is also wildlife rehab since most zoos do at least a little bit of that. And I love ECC too! Why do I like so many things :arghh:

I'm trying to think of pets that have more than 4 legs...do people often bring their pet spiders to the vet? :p

Idk, they might. And I'm not going near them.

We can open up a Wildlife rehab/feline/exotics/emergency/shelter clinic. What could go wrong.

My sister worked at a clinic that did wild life rehab, saw a ton of exotic pets in the area, and also did small animal GP. Was a cool little set up. And my sister worked emergency and hospice in combo with it. So it's totes doable to do whatever you want :).

Yeah I worked at a small animal/exotics practice that helped with wildlife rehab too :)

Oh I want to do hospice stuff, too

I think in WA only rehab facilities can see wildlife? Would need to move.

Hey everyone! I love reading everyone else's interests. Mine are really broad. On one end of the spectrum I'd like to specialize in psittacine medicine with some pocket pets thrown in there, and on the other end I want to practice ruminant internal medicine and surgery. If anybody has career suggestions that combine these interests, throw them at me!

At the moment, I'm most interested in specializing -- I think it fits my personality/work style a lot better than gp. I'm particularly interested in oncology, but I also have loved seeing surgeries, so I think that could be fun. I think diagnostic imaging is super cool. I'm also interested in analgesia in animals, and wish there was more we could do for pain management, particularly chronic pain in older animals.

On top of all that, I have a special love for cats, so could honestly see myself working at a feline-only practice, but I also really love horses and being outside. And dogs. And goats. And bunnies. I like them too.

And, I'd like to work in a small practice and/or own my own practice.

...so basically, I want to run my own oncology/hospice clinic where I also do one-off surgeries, MRIs, and CT scans on cats, ponies, goats, bunnies, and golden retrievers, specifically.

If you are interested in specialties that are also "high touch" in terms of long-term patients/continuity of care, then maybe check out dermatology? My current boss is a dermatologist who owns a small clinic, and she sees the same patients regularly & often throughout their life since allergies are often a life-long thing. It's a great fit for her because she loves to keep in touch with clients.

Neuro and internal medicine also have a good proportion of long-term, often frequent flyer clients. Some of my favorite patients from my internship were the cytosar (chemo) dogs that came for a 2 day stay every 3-5 weeks.

Oh forgot to tack one more thing on to my crazy list earlier...before this whole career change thing, I came from the tech industry (computer stuffs, not vet tech), and so I'm also very interested in exploring technology-related avenues within vet med (beyond just making a yelp account for the clinic where I work now). I could also see myself enjoying biotech/bioengineering/bioinformatics. Some cool stuff happening on that front these days. (I have career envy, @SummerTheLynx)

Random question, has anyone experienced transferring? Specifically a state-side school to another state-side school. The curriculums don't exactly overlap completely for the first year and the reason would be for career goals and a significant other (no intention to marry in the near future until I've graduated), so I'm not sure if that's very persuasive or urgent.

It depends on where you want to transfer to, if they have space in the class, etc. Though, realistically, I wouldn't 100% bank on transferring as it can be tricky or even almost impossible to do in some situations. Have you looked at the criteria for where you would want to transfer to?

The next issue is, if you transfer, would you be okay with potentially having to take the year over again if the curriculums don't match or you can't take those extra classes?

I've been waitlisted to my top two choices, UGA and Tufts, so I'm seeing if transferring is a possibility if I don't get off the waitlist. UGA is more strict when it comes to transferring, reserving those spots for Georgia residents and those with health/financial issues. Tufts seems a bit more lax, but both do require curriculum compatibility.

I would be fine with retaking the first year for Tufts - I actually love their first year curriculum and the courses they offer, which is why I'm considering transferring. Georgia, not sure if I could even successfully transfer, but I wouldn't mind either. I just don't know if my reasons would be enough for them, given that they do have space in their classes.

That extra year of tuition though .

Well, the good news is, the waitlists haven't even started moving yet, so who knows, you may still have a chance at these schools :)

I guess the other question is what's the rationale for transferring? My fiancé transferred here so we could be together during vet school. It is possible, but it's a heck of a lot of work, and depending on the reasoning for it, may or may not be worth it

My ideal career would have both medical and surgical aspects, and have some degree of long term patients/continuity of care. I don't know if such a specialty exists haha, which kind of has me torn because I think I would be happier going the specialty route than the GP route? Idk. Who knows!

Sure it does, it's called GP!

But in a non-joking matter, ophthalmology is the best of all worlds in that regard

Edit: you edited your post after I quoted :p
