Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone else having a really hard time focusing on this semester's courses? Since I've been accepted to MSU's CVM, and all of my prereqs are done, I have no drive this semester. It could be that, or the fact that all I have this semester are the ecology courses required for my biology major, and I have about zero interest in them. And trying to pack to move, find a summer job, a permanent job for my wife, a place to live. Ahh!! School has never been this much of a struggle for me!

And bombai, thank you for telling us your pronoun preference! As a trans man, this was something that I used to struggle with as well. Correcting people and expressing my preferences was ultimately very liberating and freeing, if not terrifying at the same time.

I feel this was about 2/3 of my classes even though I still need them to graduate haha. I still have one pre req left but I'm doing well so far. Research is keeping me motivated because we might have two manuscripts to put out by May

Same here! Senioritis is hitting me hard right now. Since getting my acceptance letter from Kansas, all I have done is think about starting vet school, finding housing, and still in disbelief that I'm actually going to vet school!

I completely peaced out on my harder classes (biochem, inorganic II) after I got my acceptance. Wasn't maintaining valedictorian or anything so it became a game of "what's the lowest grade I can get on this test to still get a C in the class..."

Would not necessarily recommend, but was nice, stress wise, after agonizing over grades for the years before.

Keep trying to motivate myself for domestic animal behavior but I'm struggling... mainly because of how the format of the class is

That's what a husband is! lol jk, my husband was the one who pushed me to reconsider vet med. I warned him, it's not only my fault if we end up in financial ruin because of it.
My husband has been so supportive! I feel very lucky in that regard. Of course once I graduate, I'm supposed to support him...

My husband jokingly mentioned being a trophy husband. But the only thing he's asked for specifically is a box of kittens. Like that will be hard to come by 🙄 😀

Yeah, those are both hard to find and expensive in our chosen profession! 😉 I believe trophy husband has come up for us too  Will you be able to be together during vet school?

He'll be looking for a job wherever I decide to attend, and is very uncomfortable with the idea of living apart. He has a point, I haven't cooked or cleaned for myself in years and I might die of starvation if he wasn't there to look after me 😉. So yes, we'll be together.

That's awesome! That's one thing that has been super tough about this for us, while I've been finishing prerequisites we've been about 5 hours apart and will be for at least part of vet school. We are hoping he can get a transfer closer at some point in the process.

That's really rough! I couldn't imagine doing this without my support hubby. I'm hoping for the best for you!

It has been a major stress point to try and find him a new job in such a limited time frame though, it's wearing on both of us. He has an excellent job now, but with no IS school... we HAVE to move. He theoretically should stay at his old job until he finds a new one, and his boss and co-workers are basically begging him to stay (long story) but he needs to find a new job. It's just frustrating because I keep urging him to start looking, but he keeps arguing that if he finds a job, he'd have to move NOW and we really can't afford two apartments on different sides of the country. I need to stay here because I'm working now, and we will soon be moving down to one income, soooo yeah stockpile that s***. End result is we have to find a new job across the country, in about a three month time frame (ideally less) and move all without tearing each others heads off. Wish us luck .

Ha, my boyfriend's coming with me and I wonder if it's because he might die of starvation otherwise... I kid, I kid. I've been sick and last night he surprised me with a pizza 🙂

That is super tough. I wish the best for both of you! Sounds like you're already pros at LDRs, but I hope you can close the distance soon!

Soo... I'm really not qualified to give advice here and I hope I'm not overstepping, but it might be worth it for him to send some resumes out now or at least try to do some networking where you've been accepted. There was a four or five month gap from when I applied to when I started my current job (and I was told that was fast for where I work!) and my boyfriend just hired someone who won't start for at least six months.

Ugh. Moving. My boyfriend and I will be moving 2,000 miles and we're working with a short time frame because I also want to work for as long as possible before school starts. Have you decided on how you're moving? A Pod would be most convenient for us, but they are so, so expensive. I think we have a small enough amount of stuff that we can come out ahead by selling most of what we have and shipping the rest, but my boyfriend wants to rent a van and drive 30 hours. Every option is expensive, time consuming, and overall 😡😡😡 And then there's the probable 2-week gap when school will have started but we won't have a place to live, and his mom's big birthday camping trip 2,000 miles in the opposite direction in the middle of all this...

Ouch, B-Day camping trip is a loooong ways away. I'm hoping I can take vacation to cover my moving and still collect a paycheck. I KNOW it's not going to work out nice enough that I could take vacation until vet school starts but I can still hope *sigh* If I get a house in Davis with roommates you can totally crash on my couch! We were thinking of renting a moving truck and towing our car as it would be about $1000 cheaper, and if anything breaks we don't have to fight over what it's worth. We probably should just ship it via POD or whatever but I don't know, still considering everything, it SOOOOOO frustrating! 😡😡😡😡

Btw you are totally free to offer helpful advice like that any time! Definitely not overstepping at all! Thanks for the advice, he will be sending out resumes next month, and this month he's looking at headhunters, just extremely nerve racking!

I'm sure it'll all work out... eventually. Moving sucks no matter what, and that's somehow reassuring- whatever we decide doesn't really matter

If you come across any good moving options (especially to Davis!) let me know. I keep hoping there's some cheap, convenient option that will magically appear.

When my s/o and I moved to Arizona, we used ABF Freight/Trucking https://arcb.com/abf-freight to move our stuff. They dropped off a semi-trailer at our apt several days before we moved, we filled what we needed to (they charge you by the horizontal foot) and you have 9ft to the ceiling to pack stuff so if you are good at packing and arranging your belongings, you could fit it into a smaller area than you would need in a rental truck. Then they came back to pick it up and drove it to AZ for us.

It was cheaper than doing BOTH the Pod or renting a truck to drive (as well as our vehicles) and we didn't have the hassle of driving it. They delivered it to our new apartment complex right to the garage. We unloaded it and then they came to pick it up. It was seriously the easiest move I've ever had (and we've moved a lot!) Haha. The drivers were awesome and all of our stuff was in the same condition we left it.
I posted the link with this post. It's called ABF where I'm from but something else in other areas. They will send you free quotes as well 🙂

Thank you! I looked into them before, but I didn't realize you only pay for the space you need. This is very promising!

It shows ~$1,600-$2,200 for a studio apartment (we actually have a 1 bd but don't have a lot of stuff), and that seems awfully high, but maybe my expectations are unrealistic. It's cheaper than the rental truck/van quotes we've looked at (and much, much more convenient) so that's good!

Just to be clear, did you use the UPack thing? Those don't look very big. It's barely wide enough inside to fit my couch, but they'll charge me $2300 for one of them. I really wish I didn't like any of my stuff...

You're welcome! We estimated our footage used as 10ft and we ended up using 6-7 feet...but we did not stack it all the way to the top. Regardless of how many feet you choose, they ONLY charge you for what you use. You and the driver agree on the footage and then both of you sign so you won't have any extra charges. We had a full 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment and I'm pretty sure we ended up at less than $2,000. That included them holding it for 2 extra days for us. The convenience is so worth the little extra money. The only thing we didn't put on the truck was our TV's because of possible shifting and the heat--it was 120 degrees and the end of June when we moved!

No, we didn't use the UPack. We did the one where ABF freight drops off an actual semi-trailer. You fill it to the footage you need, place the doors (they give you) and put your own lock on it.

When you click on the link I posted, try changing the "I need solutions for:" to Less-Than-Truckload or Moving Services. It was 2 years ago but I think we did the "less than truckload".

Anytime! Good luck with your moving and job searches! It isn't easy, but it's definitely worth it. 🙂

We were not able to come out here before my s/o started dental school so when I looked for apartments I asked around like you are doing and I used Google Maps "street view" to check out the areas we wanted to live in. That might assist you as well in determining a good neighborhood/area ahead of time👍

It's not easy, but we are in contact a lot and FaceTime is an amazing thing. Honestly, its made a huge difference, and 5 hours isn't too bad, I go home or he comes here for weekends a lot. And fortunately neither of us have starved to death 😛
You're very lucky your husband can move with you, but it does sound like the job switch is stressful. That would be crazy hard to time. I'll think good thoughts for you both that it all works just right. Keep us updated!

What are you going to study?!
It's the PhD program at Georgia. The professor is looking for students and basically said that as long as I have three good references(which I do but one is currently in Japan) that I'll be accepted. He also said he should have the money for a stipend and tuition waiver. Much more practical cost-wise than vet school. Especially when I've taken out loans for undergrad. I would ultimately want to do research so I'm just skipping a step

Good for you! That's awesome! I think that doing just a PhD (without DVM) when you ultimately want to do research is really really smart...

Yea... that's what I was thinking. Still need to talk to my mom about it to rationalize it and not just change my mind all of a sudden

This is awesome! I'm applying for one PhD program and one MS, but I definitely don't have any guaranteed acceptances and I'm not sure I'll get into either of them. I have really limited research experience and my grades are average or below average. The kids I knew in college who were preparing for grad school were in labs 24/7 doing research with important profs, never got below a 4.0 . . . I just don't know about this. :nailbiting: But I'll give it a shot!

Psssh there's several grad students in the lab I work in who are amazing and definitely didn't fit that description (and would freely admit it!). It seems like a lot of grad students kinda just find their way into their MS/PhD programs. You'll rock it PBC!

Waiting for people to accept positions at your school so you can figure out who your classmates will be:

Now I'm all excited for decisions to come out for c/o 2021 so I can find out who all the new peeps will be! Hopefully they'll love us as much as we love the current 2nd years 😍
