Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If someone could find my motivation and return it to me, thatdbegreat 😕
OMG yes! I'm trying to study and it definitely isn't going well, but I'm well aware that it's not cool for me to just not know how to treat heart disease or something because the pandemic meant the final exam was open book....

Illinois is going to do online imaging, cytology, and primary care for our first 6 weeks of summer. Then they're moving professional development to summer all online. Then we are tentatively scheduled to start in person clinics on August 3 with our schedule as is.

Main campus announced yesterday that summer classes will be all online and they're continuing no in person activities through July 31st. Unclear at this time what that means for our class of 2021, hopefully they'll be able to be in the hospital before then. We were still having clinics in person for 3 weeks after main campus suspended in-person operations, so there's the possibility they could make an exception for 2021 as well.

@Coopah because I know you intend to match...and whoever else...it looks like VIRMP is going to push everything back a month to accomodate this weird year.
that's actually awesome because I've been on the fence about doing the match and was worried I just wouldn't be able to since it would be hard to get someone who could comment on my skills in clinics if clinics are online until like two months before the match lol

Totally agree. I think it'll help a lot.

I'm so torn on applying to match. I've become so interested in onco, but I'm definitely in bottom 25% of my class. :/

I had finals today, so I hadn’t heard that! That’s good news!! (Albeit less time to find housing where you’re gonna live for the next year- but it’s still a better problem to have.)

Maybe reach out to some of the oncologists at your school and ask what they think your chances might be?

I would say that it never hurts to apply... but when it's expensive to apply, it kinda does hurt.

It is a small field, so not having a specialist isn’t necessarily a mark against a school. It is covered in other ways, and if someone really develops an interest, they work hard to connect a student with a specialist to help further their learning. I will never hold it against a school as long as they support students.

I wonder if the programs will end up pushing back their start dates by a month.

Our first two months of clinical rotations are going to be online.

We are online until August 3rd, though they did voodoo magic so we only lose 2 full blocks. By doing that, they gifted us back an off block by removing our second ER block.

They dropped the graduation requirements by two elective blocks if things get messy, but we still have to meet all track minimums. Monday I have to talk to them about rescheduling things. I really want to do Optho in person and not online.

Our online schedule has been changed up a bit, but it's complicated. Basically they're cutting out the number of makeup weeks we'll be required to do later on, which hopefully preserves some elective time.

I am on the fence about how I feel about it. I still kinda wish they would let us stay longer after graduation so we can complete the core program as-is and maintain "student" status to do some cool electives afterwards. On the other hand, the online stuff has been more helpful than I anticipated and I kinda wish all of our classes were taught like this in the first place.

It does make you wonder a bit on how our class is going to do on the NAVLE compared to previous years.

Did 5 days of the 6 month calendar. Have fallen off the wagon since this is a vacation block.

Our lab animal prof makes us do a book report because he thinks the curriculum should give us more time for leisure reading. Nice concept, but the assignment irritates me... it takes a lot of time, and it's not exactly leisure reading if there's a deadline and part of my grade riding on it. But I digress....

I got 92% on it. Without actually reading the book (or looking up a synopsis online or whatever... 100% BS). Does bull**** still sell in case I need a backup plan?

Took our last third year final yesterday, so I guess I'm a fourth year. White coat would have been this saturday and would have started my shelter med/surg rotation Monday. Alas. New plan is to start a week of orientation on 5/4 and start online rotations 5/11...off until then. We are doing eight weeks online. The class in being slit into fourths and rotating two weeks each between prev med, radiology, applied path, and clin path. No idea what our individual schedules are yet for online or after. Hopefully start in the clinic 7/6.

Just took my last final! I have a take home elective exam due Friday, but this is the last core exam. White coat would be Friday, but they postponed it to June 12th. Our first three rotations are online- they’re estimating us coming back June 15.

since my first three rotations were externships and were cancelled, they switched my schedule so now I have online radiology, and online US/ clin path, and a second anesthesia (hopefully in clinics)

I got Leaderrescheduled, but the one in Portland can’t accommodate me for my new availability, so I’m looking for another externship (private practice ideally, SA ER focused w/ an internship program).
