Class of 2022...how you doin'?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well....I planned on cutting back on my full-time work hours over the summer but it looks like I'll be doing quite the opposite. My 3 year pup (see my profile pic for her cuteness) had a couple high-grade mast cell tumors removed and we just had out first oncology appointment today, so it looks like additional surgery +/- lymph node removal and chemo is in her near future. 🙁 I already work full-time as a veterinary assistant and am seriously thinking about getting a part-time job on top of that to help pay off her vet bills before school starts. I wouldn't be so concerned with the financial burden of all of this if I would be continuing to work during the fall, which I am not once school starts.

I love her so much and will do anything for her.
@Aqua_girl87 your pup is beautiful!
She knows you'll be right by her side - and she LOVES you as much as you love her! :biglove:

Sending good thoughts your way!

Oh I was really hoping for good news for you 🙁. I'm here for you if you ever need to talk. If they put her on pred and she's really hungry, I've found adding lots of fiber (green beans or pumpkin) can help and lots of slow chews. My dog kept trying to eat mulch or discarded cigarettes 🤢. She'll also drink and pee a ton so make sure to let her out often. Most of all just show her lots of love, they tend to tolerate chemo really well.

Ugh I feel you. Still trying to find a daycare for our baby when school starts that won't cost $1200/month or more that also has space! Love to all the mom's and dads in our class! We can do it!

Ugh. I remember those days. Thankfully my kids are older so they can stay home alone. And if I forget to feed them, they’ll just feed themselves. Lol. We can do this though!! Looks like we will have some awesome classmates too!

Thanks for the support everyone. It's hard when we were only expecting to remove the one MCT on her abdomen and then it turned into sooooo much more when we discovered another one on her lip during surgery.

Thanks for the suggestion. Right now, she's on Claritin (Benadryl makes her too groggy) and Pepcid. She's so young too, which is making it harder for me to wrap my head around. 🙁 I am trying so hard to be optimistic for her and will do anything for her. I'm just grateful that this is happening now before school starts where I everyone at the clinic I work at here for as my emotional support team.

What is a human supposed to do when they get a tick on them? I don't even know how I would have gotten this tick on me except for maybe one of the dogs at work today transferred it over to me somehow. YUCK!!! It was on my scalp. I killed it.

Panic, probably. It's what I do in that scenario.

My parents live in Michigan. So when I move, I can move to their house and then I was thinking of going to East Lansing to find housing. My work is asking me when I am leaving and I can't decide when is the right time to leave yet. I don't know how long it's going to take to find a house..... (!!)
I think I quit working at the beginning of August, and packed up and drove to MI from CA. I didn't end up moving into Lansing right away, which I kind of regret because I lost alot of time commuting the first few months of school. I'd probably be looking around at areas and housing prices right now just to get a general feel of it, and try to lock in someplace around July. I think alot of people recommend coming at least a few weeks early, so you can get the stress of unpacking/exploring a new area out of the way before school kicks it into gear.

go maize!

Tbh I’d personally get it tested just to see. If I got a tick bite, I’d want to know if it was carrying anything it could’ve passed to me so I could be on the look out for symptoms and discuss it with my dr.

But first I would panic.

When I've had ticks after long hiking trips I usually would identify what type of tick it was and then put it in one of those sample cups and close the lid and leave it to suffocate because ticks are awful. I didn't worry too much about getting them tested.

University of Rhode Island TickEncounter Resource Center here is a useful site for identification, education and reporting.

OK Thanks. That's about what I was thinking, so that's what I'll do. I'm sad to leave work. I LOVE the people I work with.

I didn't end up doing anything about the tick ...... yet. I called the Vet I work with and she made me feel better. It's amazing that when it has to deal with me I all of the sudden became a baby!!!

Is SAVMA membership worth paying for?
IDK but the vet parties are def worth crashing!

Probably varies from school to school, but PLIT is free with your SAVMA membership (which is a good extra thing to have if you want to do externships...having PLIT was a requirement for mine actually). It was $35 for the year here and SAVMA membership= participation in vector borne disease day here which meant a year of free flea/heartworm for both my cats. Idk if all schools do that but that alone made it worth it. Plus lunch lectures and the perks once you graduate on conference/AVMA membership.

In addition to everything 3m said (other than here you don't have to be part of SAVMA to get free flea/tick/HW stuff), at K-State and I believe a lot of other schools you're required to be part of SAVMA to join other clubs! They also give us $10 of printing per year, so that's pretty nice.

Interesting how all schools do things differently. Here we don’t have to join SAVMA to be in other clubs.

Also savma symposium and avma conference admissions, plus your last year auto converts to avma membership if you did all four years and were in good standing.

Javma online too

What is the difference between SCAVMA and SAVMA? I’ve seen them used interchangeably. I know one has the word “chapter” in it but are they the same thing?

They’re phasing out (or have already?) SCAVMA and everyone will be using SAVMA from now on to lessen the confusion. SAVMA and SCAVMA were the same thing.

My understanding is it's basically "required" . I know alot of schools have scholarships and special equipment pricing through them. Also if you want to join other clubs membership of savma is required to join those clubs because they help fund the other clubs.
FYI this is very school specific. You did not have to be a SCAVMA member at UMN to join any of the other clubs.

You did have to be a member to join other clubs here at OkSU, so I just wasn’t a member of any clubs. Got lots of whining. Too bad.

Never thought it was worth being a member. Not a member of the AVMA either. Go ahead, give me a reason - I’ll wait. Advocating appropriately for the profession can count as a reason. So if they start doing that...

Everytime I see the UW thread update I keep hoping it's you!

I'm currently at #13. They pretty much said that given how many seats they still have to fill, they're most likely going to be offering me a seat as early as late this week.

Aaaaaand it's been 3 hours and I've already had a meltdown about moving all my stuff and my cats and having to do long distance with my BF of 2 years for the first time ever.

If you ever need someone to talk to about moving long distance for school with cats or about being far away from family, feel free to hit me up. If you were to drive yourself and your stuff over to school I believe the distance would be similar to my own biannual drive between TX and CO.

I'm unfortunately not super helpful for the long distance relationship side of things, but there are definitely other people on here with more insight into that who I'm sure would love to lend you an ear.

When I move to vet school in August I will have had to move 24 times in 14 years - moving sucks 100% of the time but I can offer commiseration or advice as much as you'd like [emoji23]

I also did tons of long distance time at the beginning of my relationship. Happy to offer pointers or support there too!

I think I calculated at some point that I had been married for like 3 years before the hubs and I finally spent more time living in the same place than apart. Longest I went without seeing him was almost a year. [emoji853]

Being in the military leaves you little to no choice in either matter

I like that husband of mine an awful lot too, which helps. 😉 Coming up on our seventh wedding anniversary next month! 😍

Wow! That's so amazing!!! I'm going in to vet school with a boyfriend of 3 1/2 years, but he found a great job in a different state so we're going to do long distance for vet school. It stinks because we've lived together for the past 2 years but I freaking love this guy 🙂 we're just gonna have to make it work! It's awesome to hear success stories like yours though to keep the faith alive 🙂

I’m in a similar boat. I freaking love my bf. We’ve lived together for almost a year now. He’s my best friend and it’s really hard to not imagine coming home to him every day for the next 4 years. Plus I’d be taking the cats and he’d be catless 🙁

He’s my first ever bf and I have no doubt that we can do LD because we communicate really well with one another. But it’s just gunna suck major donkey balls.
