Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just got an interview and scheduled for december 6th. first interview and a great school! hope i don't mess it up by my nervousness.

Congrats when were you complete? Stats if u don't mind.. I'm waiting patiently for one still

Waitlisted, which is fine, I didn't really like DMU when I was there anyway. I just didn't get that special feeling about them.

I'm glad things are working out for you! It's pretty crazy, because this is how I feel about AZCOM, so I guess we switched.

Waitlisted. Wow and I thought the interview couldn't have gone better.

sorry to hear that, but hey that doesn't quite mean your out of the game as many have said. Did you interview after October 4th? I interviewed on 10/4 and have yet to hear anything back yet.

Yeah you to man! Are you going to attend DMU then? I'm pretty set on AZCOM, maybe UNE if they ever decide to send out decisions

I interviewed 10/4. Maybe they are just delayed on sending stuff out for some people.

Waitlisted as well... really disappointed. I suppose it was dumb to schedule my 1st choice school interview very first. I think I could have done a much better job if I hadn't have been so nervous. I just wish I could get a more specific decision, so that I know where I stand. >.<

Ugh.

Also, I interviewed Oct. 1st.

I interviewed on the 12th. Did any of you call to find out why? I couldn't believe what they told me.

ACCEPTED!! Interviewed on 10/12. So excited right now!!

I was placed on the Alternate list whatever that means. [Eye roll]. Kinda expected after that interview day though

Accepted! Will be matriculating and withdrawing from other schools! Complete in July. Interviewed October 4th. To all my fellow applicants, good luck this cycle. I wish you all nothing but success. And to those who were wait listed...just remember, good things come to those who wait. And to my future fellow classmates, can't wait to meet you all!

Accepted!

So excited and shocked because I thought I blew the interview. It was my first one, and I was so nervous my face kept twitching!
But, really, it was a great school, and I completely agree with everything that everyone had to say about the school.

Actually I'd really be interested to hear as well. They waitlisted me after I thought the day had gone extremely well.

I have not been in that situation, but I almost did miss my interview because my phone decided to turn off in the middle of the night.

Thankfully, I didn't miss it nor was I late, and the adcom people seemed very understanding, telling me that they would have called me to wake me up if I didn't show up.

So I guess that same courtesy would apply to everyone else who, because of situations beyond their control, cannot make it to the interview.

Yeah, they were extremely understanding. I made the interview, but was about a half hour late, so it wasn't too big a deal.

Awesome school, awesome people, awesome environment. Hoping for good news now.

Just interviewed today. I feel it went well. It seemed very short. Not sure what to think about that. Now I wait.

*Crosses Fingers* Good luck to all!

It was a pleasure meeting you angldrps.

Mine felt extremely short, I want to say almost 30 minutes. I was accepted yesterday. So don't worry about the length of the interview. I interviewed with Dr. Schuster and Dr. OConnell

Well... Unfortunately I will not be going to des Moines. Rejection letter today. :0( congratulations to all of you have been accepted. I wish you all the best of luck.

Not sure who you are. Were you the guy in military?

I have read a lot of posts in this thread stating DMU is great, but not too many reasons why. What is it that makes everyone come away with such a great impression of it?

Are the chances of getting accepted high if you interview in December? Does anyone know what percentage of the class has been filled?

There is no way to predict how much of the class has been filled. Just go to your interview and do your best. If you do poorly, regardless of how much of the class is filled, you won't be accepted. If you do exceptionally well, I don't see how you won't be accepted.

My interview day experience:
The school itself is truly as amazing as everyone says it is. I found it to be very similar to KCUMB in a lot of ways and I fell in love with that school so there is no surprise that I feel really happy with DMU as well. One thing I wish they had was system based curriculum starting from Year 1. They did mention that they are trying to sync up anatomy with some of the other courses for first years so I think they are definitely leaning towards it. I am not sure how I feel about the frequent testing because I feel like this approach is very binge and purge type of thing. The surgical lab and the kaplan course definitely moves DMU up my list. The campus itself was beautiful, loved the comfy seats around campus, the lunch was the absolute best, the students and faculty were amazing, and the wellness center was definitely top notch. While I was waiting for my shuttle to arrive, Dr. Mueller even came up to me and chatted for a bit.

For the most part, the interview went well. I have never had interviewers laugh so much at any of my past interviews. When it was time for me to ask them questions, I built up the courage to ask them the following question that I wasn't sure would be a good idea in the beginning: "I might be wrong about this but walking around campus all day I noticed a sort of lack of diversity in student population. Would you mind giving me your thoughts on this?" The interviewers didn't seem to mind at all that I asked this question and answered very honestly. One of the interviewers even said to me "That is why we need you." I replied with "Trust me, I need you more than you need me." This led to all the interviewers laughing and one of them responding with "Touché". Haha 🙂 From this, you can get a sense of how relaxed and conversational the interview was. Other than the usual "Why medicine?", "What have I done to prepare myself for a career in medicine?", "What do I see myself doing in the future?", "What do you for fun?", "Are you applying to MD and DO schools?", "Why is America behind all the other developed countries when it comes to health care?" , majority of my questions were application specific. I believe my interview was 35-40 minutes (not too sure) .
To be honest, I am really afraid to feel too confident about how well the interview went because based on some posts in this thread, some of the past interviewees also thought that their interview went really well but ended up being waitlisted/rejected. Just want to mentally prepare for the worst. If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me.

I have been reading up on the Letter of Intent concept. Is it too much to send one directly post interview day? Or is it a tool to use encase you get waitlisted? Is anyone familiar with these?

Page 14 of this thread I wrote a book on why I love this school. 😍

I interviewed on Thursday and I sent a letter on Friday by email. They interviewed on Friday as well so I wanted to make sure they remember me a bit. Also, I don't think it's too early. I plan on doing this for all of my interviews.

Congrats to everyone who got in and for the waitlisted folks keep us informed on how your journey goes.

My app was complete for DMU on 10/11/2012. Waiting patiently for an interview. I'm originally from Iowa and this would put me closer to my family. I'm really excited to see the school and meet some of the faculty.

Stats: around 3.7 sGPA, around 3.5 overall GPA, 27R MCAT.

On hold.

Meh. I don't really know how to feel. I probably wouldn't give a crap if it wasn't for the fact that pretty much everyone I meet on SDN and interview days talks about how awesome Des Moines is/was... and I feel like I'm missing out on a picnic.

Is there a trend among the waitlisted applicants? Did you have healthcare experience? Its evident your stats were good enough. I am just wondering what their biggest 'no factor' is.

Their biggest factor is whether you'd be agood match at their scholl and be happy. Their stats are reallt all over the place

I have been through Des Moines a few times, but have never actually stayed there. What is life like around this small city? Also, are there student organizations that don't involve medicine in some way? It seems that most that are listed on the DMU website involve medicine in some way.

As a side note, it is incredible how much activity this thread has compared to the other schools to which I am applying.
