Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Whew. Just put $500 on it. Oh yeah, feeling pretty baller spending all this money I don't have.

Also Accepted! Interviewed 12/6 as well.

First acceptance as a reapplicant and it is definitely a weight off the shoulders.

Has anyone heard if scholarship offers have gone out at this point?

I've heard December, which I guess would mean we would hear by the 21st

Just wanted to let you all know that I officially removed myself from the pool of accepted applicants this morning. It was a hard decision given how great a school DMU is, but I eventually decided on something in my home state.

Good luck to everyone out there!

Would it be safe to assume I will not be getting an interview here? My file was marked complete 10/22 🙁

Not necessarily, I think most people end up waiting 60 days after being complete unless you get a fastrack interview.

Same exact situation for me. I'm calling friday at the 60 day mark... as many others have had to do. All hope is not lost!

Has anyone else noticed that we have become one of the most boring threads?

Well, having been accepted to their class I am just reading up this thread in hopes for scholarship news (fingers crossed).
But even without it, I'd say that DMU wins out over all of my other acceptances. With only interview left to attend in Columbus, OH.

Not necessarily, it took me a little over the 60 day mark to get an interview and just got accepted. Hang in there.

Question: Did you, or other "post 60day" applicants have to call to get that interview invite, or did it just finally arrive... and if so at what day? 61, 62, 70?

I feel the same way. Not counting on a scholarship, but it would be nice. :xf: I think I've finally come to terms with taking out the horrendous amount of student loans.

I think there was someone earlier in the thread that called, and got an II at day 62 or something like that.

Compared to the cost of attendance at other schools, I feel like DMU is almost free. I'm seriously going to save almost $100K by going here.

This is true. The only school cheaper than this one is my state school. I managed to graduate with my BS and MA without the first cent in student loans, so these numbers frighten me.

I didn't call I got an email for the invite on day 63

Anyone else decided it would be a good idea to drive in this insane blizzard for 12/21 interview? What should have taken me 5.5 hours is now going on 10 hours and still 60 miles to go:-( have been standing on the expressway for the past 1.5 hours with 0 movement... Really really hope it's worth it.

I'm sorry you had to deal with the weather 🙁 FYI If anyone else is wondering about hearing back from admissions about interviews or decisions, DMU was closed yesterday and today due to the blizzard. DMU has been without power ever since yesterday afternoon - they're hoping to have it on by noon today so they can open this afternoon. But after today is DMU's winter break, so you may not hear anything until after the holidays.

I would be curious to know what DMU said regarding your interview and the school closure.

So I was hoping/thinking that scholarship emails would go out toward the end of this week... anyone get one? Maybe they didn't send any out because of the inclement weather/school closure?

The interview took place at the Marriott hotel downtown. I got to Hampton Inn at 3am, and due to lack of sleep, I think I was too blatantly honest about some things at the interview, which is not always a good thing. Oh well. Also, we didn't get to see the school nor talked to any students. Maybe I will be less disappointed if I get wait-listed/rejected... doubtful=)

That is a bummer. Well if there is anything I can answer, I would be happy to do so. Or any way I can help. That is unfortunate because the facilities are quite nice. The whole campus was on lockdown though with a lack of power.

Im with Frky that's a huge bummer. If you want to PM me i can give you the low down on DMU too. I have quite a lengthy pros and cons list that I created with a lot of detail that might help fill in the gaps.

Thanks guys. If I get in, I will probably bug you with questions...

Just withdrew my application. I was scheduled to interview mid-January. Hopefully someone else will claim that spot 🙂

Good luck and Merry Christmas!

For those of you who sent thank you cards to your interviewers, did you address it to the admissions office? For instance Dr. so and so, admissions office, address to the admissions office?

I sent thank yours to my interviewers but I sent them via email. I usually would write an actual letter but I had a feeling the admissions decision would be too quick for them to get there. I interviewed on a Monday and heard back less than 48 hours later. Since its the break you can probably mail them. You can probably address them to your interviewer c/o the admissions office and follow up to make sure they get there.

Thank you. They told us 2-3 weeks, so that should be enough time to send actual mail..

They said the same thing for more group and they got back to me in 5 days.

Huh. I've already sent the cards today. Should I email too, or is that a bit of an overkill you think?=) I would pretty much say the same thing in the email that I wrote in the cards...

I would vote don't, cards do not make a difference in your decision anyway and you don't want to look desperate.

Overkill!

I just sent an email (no cards). I thought it was most appropriate because DMU gave us our interviewer's email addresses. Other schools I've been at have given us the address and specified to send a thank you card, so since DMU provided us with their email address I took that as them meaning an email was appropriate.

no email, got it=) the only reason I sent the cards was because I asked the admissions lady what she thinks would be better, and she said cards, but I could send an email if I want. So yeah. I thus conclude this meaningless discussion on cards that I have started=) Thank you.

haha it's no problem.

In other news... so would it be reasonable to assume that no IIs are going out until after New Years? I need to pretend DMU doesnt exist for a week so I quit wondering.

I'm trying to pretend the same. However, I called for an update a few weeks ago and the gentlemen let me know that emails will be sent out for interviews (if offered) by the 60 days mentioned on the secondary even with the holidays approaching. 60 days for me is New Years eve, but still no email. I'm looking forward to it regardless if it's 60 days +/- a few. In past messages, I've read that the 60 days wasn't set in stone. I'm really excited and a bit anxious. We'll have to wait and see. Happy New Year to everyone!

Pre-Interview Hold. Sigh...

Trying to buy a house, and I was hoping to have some resolution by January to begin a more serious search in Phoenix vs DMU. Hate to say it but even a rejection would have provided me some resolution lol.

For anyone with actual insight... how active/good is DMU with their hold list, any idea when they "re-review" applicants? Any advice for me?

DMU is my top choice for multiple reasons... I want to hold out as long as possible without damaging my chances to get settled.

I don't know about their hold-list but buying a house while you're in school may not be the wisest decision. Des Moines makes no guarantees as to your location for rotations third year. You rank your choices but after that its a lottery. Forget about where you'll be fourth year. You may find yourself making payments on a house that you can't live in in two years. I have encountered many people who are regretting purchasing a house in med school and residency and now have to contend with out of state rentals. Sorry to get off topic but just my two cents.

Thank you and yes, I'm honestly aware of the risks. For phoenix I DO have local rotations guaranteed, and the savings of ownership approach 90K without factoring appreciation for those 4 years. Plus, I'm not 23 and I'm not moving there single. My lifestyle these days is different than most college grads. If, and only if, I was able to work out a similar living scenario near DMU would I consider it.

Got an II today, complete since 11/14.

Interview scheduled for February 21, will be calling them over the next couple weeks in case someone cancels an earlier day. Interview days start February 1st but all were full.

I have a wife and three kids. Purchasing a house if I could guarantee a location would be sweet but nowhere I have interviewed/been accepted guarantees rotation sites in any locations. I may be in a city for two years, three four or forever. Just no way to know.
