Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I feel like there is no great way to study for verbal. I didn't study for it at all and ended up getting a 10 and I know people who studied for it like crazy and did worse than I did. It's just kind of random. The first time I sat for the MCAT I thought the passages were a lot longer than the ones on the practice tests. The second time I was like, oh this is all so easy! I finished like 15 min early. I have no idea, it seems to be a crapshoot for everyone!

Congrats on your score anyways, it takes a lot of work to get a baller BS and PS like you did! 🙂

You're so sweet! Thank you!
I was one of those "studied verbal like crazy" types. I practiced every day for 3 months straight and never improved. I swear I speak English! lol

Getting that 10 in PS was really damn hard. I hated physics so much. I'm so glad I don't have to study it ever again!👍

I chose the 9/14 interview day. If anybody else does let me know!

Interview invite this morning! I chose the 17th. 13th was the earliest available day for me, but I'm already at AZCOM on that day 🙁

You shoulda chosen the 14th with me!! Hahaha i don't want to be the only sdn'er that day.

Interview invite this morning too! 😀 For those curious, it came through email and was not a fast track interview. My stats are 3.44c/3.36s and 31S, and I got a complete email from DMU on July 18.

Ah right, I should post this stuff too.

3.2/3.2/33Q. Complete at DMU on July 12.

Also, as far as DMU knows (due to my AACOMAS fiasco) I have neither completed nor do I plan to complete Physics 2.

Pick the 17th with me!

Will be interviewing on September 13. Anyone else interviewing on the 13th?

What percentage of DMU interviewees are accepted?

67% shot if out of state. Not sure how I got an interview with you guys. Your MCAT scores are sick!

67% sounds good. I would be devastated if I were wait-listed post-interview though. 🙁 What are the possible decisions after interviews? Are all those that are not accepted wait-listed, or are there rejections too?

And I'm sure MCAT scores aren't everything. You must have something compelling for them to want to interview you!

Not sure about if the numbers include waitlists. Thats my worst nightmare.....

Your GPA probably blows mine out of the water.

+1!

Just a little FYI: DMU is very cautious with acceptances right after interviews ever since the class of 2014. That class was overfilled by 20 seats which is not allowed because each school is accredited for a specific number of students. If you are waitlisted, it is not the end of the world. There has been pretty good movement in the list in the past two years of admissions.

Congrats to those with interviews. Take a deep breath because you are further than many will get. DMU's interviews are fairly relaxing and it should be a fun day.

Thanks for the info, especially what I've bolded. I definitely feel very grateful to have gotten this far. I know it's no guarantee, but now I know all I have to do is not interview like an idiot and I might just be in the class of 2017.

Good luck to everyone.

Check on the previous page of this thread. I quoted something from the 2011-2012 thread with interview/acceptance/matriculant stats.

Don't worry, it's still super early.

Very true. Not too terrifying and from the way it seems a lot of DO school interviews are conducted they are very relaxed so it should be nice. Until your name is called and you need to start talking to the people that decide your fate! Oh the pressure! :scared:

Nah I'm sure we're good. A few minutes to get settled into the interview then just be yourself and talk about experiences and motivations. BAM, accepted

I'll probably be more comfortable with the ADCOM than all the awesome pre-meds .

So who is interviewing on Sept 17th?

FINALLY complete today! 🙂 Now time to wait for the next 60 days 👎

Anyone know of a good place to stay for interviews? I'm trying to find a cheap place, so far no luck... Any ideas?

Sent from my ADR6350 using SDN Mobile

I'm staying at the hampton inn by the airport for $70. It's like 5 miles from DMU.

Just got an email that I'm on hold

What are your stats?

I'm sorry 🙁 you don't even have bad stats, hopefully you will get an II later on in the cycle! If not, you'll definitely get in somewhere 👍

Nice. Did you get the DMU discount? If not, call back and see if they'll refund you.

So $70 bucks with the discount? that's not too bad, did you by chance ask about transportation to/from DMU?

Shuttle to and from airport, and shuttle to and from DMU. I'm driving though.

Oh so you got one of the earliest dates. By the time I checked the earliest left was the 13th, but I'm at AZCOM that day. The next earliest was 9/17 and that's when I'm scheduled.

DMU rejected my committee letter. :smack:
I tried to reply to the email explaining that the letter they rejected is in fact, my committee letter and should meet their requirements but their reply said that the committee letter I submitted is just a personal reference from someone and doesn't reflect the recommendation of an entire committee.
I'm trying to brainstorm as to why they are thinking this. Maybe the author of the letter forgot to write "on behalf of the committee" or maybe they didn't put it on a proper letter head??? I do know that the committee coordinator has gotten to know me really well over a year time period and basically knows my life story. Maybe her letter came off as really personal because of that? And if that were true, I would think that would be a strength and not a reason for rejection.
Now my school's committee is involved to hopefully resolve this misunderstanding. It's just frustrating because I had to go through a 6 month process to get that letter which included 15 essays, 3 workshops, a mock interview, a long application, meetings with the advisor.. etc. To have them flat-out reject just doesn't make any sense.

My application was released either yesterday or today (however AACOMAS does it) and I got an email from DMU saying I got a fast track interview! Scheduled for September 13th. 3.97/31. So pumped as I grew up near Des Moines!

15 essays for a committee letter. That is ridiculous!😱

Yeah it was nuts. They basically ask you 15 "secondary like" questions which turn out to be huge essays. But they use those essays to write your letter. As a result, your letter is very personalized and detailed. It was so difficult to get that letter! That's why DMU rejecting my committee letter is just ----> :bang:

Wow. This makes me glad my undergrad didn't have a committee.

It was a lot of work and we had to do it while taking our classes and I was also studying for the MCAT. Plus the workshops and the mock interview...
I am glad I have it because I have quite a story to tell and they really helped me explain it all. I think it will really help me.

Well.... except at DMU. :eyebrow:

Sorry to hear this, JaBoom. That sucks...

I hope they grant you an interview, at the very least out of guilt for putting you through this. 😉

To everyone who asked - my stats are 3.46/3.26/29Q.. I was complete I want to say around the 13th or 14th. I did have issues with one of my letters. They said no, I emailed them, they said no again, so I said okay no worries, then they emailed me back saying well if you want we can just allow that letter. Now I'm on hold.

EDIT: Never mind. The committee coordinator from my school just emailed me saying they are making an exception for me and will take the packet. I'm not sure why they have to "make an exception" for a committee letter though. :smack: Especially when they require one!!

Does anyone know if DMU has an explicit preference for science majors? I'm looking at the CIB and they're reporting 90%. That seems awfully high compared to some other schools!

They don't. We have business, education, and art majors in my class.
