Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got an invite this morning. Scheduled sept 27. Was the only day in sept left.
Anyone have the lowdown on this schools interview format? Ugh, lemme guess, I should go check it out on the interview feedback section, right? So much work. Lol
This is a pretty good school right? Seems like a lot of people are excited about it. Not trolling, I just don't know much about the school.

Their website has a lot of good information about the program. You can look at electives, how the four years are set up and clinical exposure. Probably one of the most informative websites when comparing it to other schools. Match lists are on their website too.

Hmm, good to know. Too bad it's not as easy to get all the other schools info so easily. It would be much simpler to compare that way since DMU's will be the first I look at. I'll have nothing else to compare it to. Good place to start though

Bunch of info sessions in the morning and tour of SIM and surgery lab, followed by lunch, and then about half hour interview with usually two faculty members and a student then a tour. The tour may be before your interview if you have a later interview.

FasTrack interview invite! Great thing to wake up this morning to find that e-mail! Never heard a negative thing about this school so man, this is exciting to be at this point in the game!

Congrats!! Mind sharing your stats and complete date? 🙄

3.24s/3.4c/28R
I think what helped my crap GPA was my strong upward trend. I'm a non-trad, lots of clinical and volunteer experience.

Complete on August 2nd.

😀

I'm checking flights first to see if the day makes much difference..probably scheduling 9/27 because the flights all cost the same

II here too. sucks that all the sept dates are gone.

3.9 gpa, 26mcat, complete email was 7/30

Congrats to everyone with interview invites!

I have yet to receive a complete email (or any email for that matter) from DMU despite sending in all my LORs. Should I contact admissions or just wait?

Couldn't hurt to call/email.

Complete 7/30 as well.
Interview Invite today!!
Scheduled October 22nd!!

Seems like DMU offers a lot of interview invites! Or maybe SDN is a severely biased sample haha. Either way, this school sounds very promising.

I've never had to book a hotel on my own before. Is it best to use travel search engines like Orbitz or is better to call the hotel directly?

I usually just use orbitz or Priceline or Hotwire. They will usually help you get the best price IMO

I think for my year they got about ~3000 primary applications. Of those, 1500 got secondary and of those I think ~700 were offered interview invites. I think they end up accepting 400 people for a class of 220. That 400 is including those taken off the waitlist.

I believe those were the stats. Not a 100% though, but they should be close.

They don't release stats about acceptances of those with fasTrack interviews, do they?

No idea. fasTrack is just a way to get candidates with really high scores to interview earlier. My theory is that it is to try to lock up those students with an acceptance and a deposit so they don't look anywhere else though the deposit is like $500 so that isn't terrible to lose if you find a place that is better suited for you. I think that is partially why we have a high GPA and MCAT average plus that scholarship that the offer for some students that have 30+ and 3.6 or 3.7+ (can't remember which one it is).

Thanks for the info!

Just finished all of my orientation and I just want to say holy crap DMU sets you up for success. Between the clubs, the faculty, the technology, the campus, the other students, the research opportunities, and much more, DMU truly sets up their students. I can promise that if you don't get your number one choice in your number one specialty, it isn't because DMU was at fault. Holy crap this is a fantastic school.

Haha! Love it! This is why DMU is tied for my top choice, and I hope I nail my interview in a few weeks! Really hoping to join you!

anyone wanna share a room? My interview is on 9/28

Or is it kinda dangerous/weird to share a room with a total stranger?

cGPA:3.4 sGPA 3.3 MCAT 28P

Didn't originally consider this school. But now hearing great things about it. Do you think it's worth me applying now? 3.2c 3.6s 31 mcat? It seems their avg gpas are pretty high . . .

I would apply if I were you. Your science GPA is good and your MCAT is higher than their average. Worth applying for sure! 👍

On hold for my retake MCAT scores (which I just finished an hour ago yayyy!). Should I wait the month for my new scores or have them go ahead and review me now (i.e.hopefully interview sooner)? (stats: 3.55c 3.32s 26Q)

You don't have bad stats. Could go either way. Idk if anyone here can tell you exactly what to do :scared: If you submit now, I don't think you'd be outright rejected at all, they may place you on hold, but you also may get an interview. However, if you feel as though you did better on your MCAT today, maybe it would be best to wait. Having them begin to review your app September 10th really isn't that late. Do whatever you feel is best 🙄

I submitted my secondary on 7/6 and retook the MCAT on 7/14. They offered me a fast-track interview on 7/16. Your stats are pretty good, so it's up to you as to whether to go ahead or wait.

Your mcat isnt horribly low. I got an interview a couple weeks back with a 26. My guess? Your sgpa is a little low. If your mcat score comes back higher, i bet it will even you out.

Hey guys, I was rejected today via email 🙁 I'm feeling a little down but I figure I'd share if it helps anyone out.

Submitted 7/18, Complete 7/30. GPAs are in my MDApps. I spoke with a very helpful lady in admissions and she said I was rejected, for obvious reasons, because of my low GPAs. Apparently DMU is sitting on a 3.68 cGPA average. Anyways, good luck to everyone else!

Your stats aren't that bad. I'm sure you'll get an interview invite somewhere. If not, I would say to greatly take advantage of the grade replacement option w/ AACOMAS.

All I have to say is stay positive to all...this is a long and very random process. God has a plan for all and if you believe and have faith...He will see you through...Don't doubt. You've worked hard so do not be discouraged...Your acceptance will come!!!

Plan to share stats after acceptance due to high levels of judgement and to let others know that its not all about numbers!! All things are possible with God!!!
