Staying at the days inn west des moines. No idea where that is in relation to the airport. Lol

It's probably about ten miles away. The airport is on the south side of Des Moines (proper) and West Des Moines is technically considered a separate city and it is located... west of Des Moines 😀 There are a bunch of little cities... West Des Moines, Urbandale, Clive, Johnston, Windsor Heights, Waukee, etc. that are all considered to be part of the greater Des Moines area.

I'm thinking about leaving my school at like 5 am to drive the day of the interview, otherwise I might drive in Thursday night and stay at my friend's house who lives in Polk City.

5 am just seems so early!

I'm having the same thoughts about another school. It seems early now, but I probably won't be able to sleep well the night before the interview anyway.

Any suggestions on places to live? I know it seems premature but I'd like to try and compare rent in different places. I'm probably looking for a 2-3 bedroom house with a little yard...

Also, just got the call this morning that a spot opened up for this Friday, so I swooped on it. Was 9/27, now 9/14 :scared:😱😀

They keep housing info in the admissions office, I snagged a lot last Friday! 😉

The school will give you a list at your interview but that's mostly apartments. In the area directly surrounding the school there are mostly apartments, but if you go a few blocks away there will be houses. Also, a lot of students choose to live in West Des Moines or other surrounding areas. Once you are accepted, you have access to a portal where there's a classifieds section where lots of people post about houses for sale or places for rent.

See you Friday!

Wooo 9/14!! See you all (probably?).

We should all meet up the night before? I'm gonna be meeting up with toytles thursday (no official plans yet) and you guys are welcome to come along.

We'll see if I decide to head there Thursday or Friday AM. Also, I'm going the DPM route, so I don't want to interfere with the DO pow-wow. 😉

Haha yeah I was going to ask if you're hanging out on this thread because the DPM wannabes are just not nearly as cool as us DO wannabes?? 😀

No worries though - DOs and DPMs take a ton of classes together at DMU - biochem, anatomy, cell, phys, micro/immuno, neuro, etc.

Just finished the interview. BabyDoc has it pretty much covered but there were a few things that I wanted to post later that we're different for me. This school just went up to my number one choice. It's a perfect fit for me and my family. I'll post later about my experience.

Glad you liked it too! Good luck!

Something like that... haha no, I just don't know anyone in the pre-pod forums that is interviewing on that day! It's the first day they are scheduling DPM interviews and there are substantially more DO interviews than DPM interviews!

can some of you who already had an interview there recommend a place to stay? thanks

I stayed at the Hampton inn by the airport, they have me a DMU interview discount, plus they have a shuttle that takes you to and from the airport as well as to and from DMU for free 🙂

My interview is on 9/17 and I'm also staying at the Hampton Inn by the airport. Driving there though so I won't use the shuttle.

Any suggestions where to grab a bite to eat the day/night before?

Are you as pumped as I am for our interviews next week? 😀

What kind of food are you looking for? Do you want something near your hotel or would you be OK exploring downtown or other parts of DSM?

Very excited 🙂 Is yours on 9/17 as well? I'm fine exploring different areas. I'm driving to Des Moines so transportation won't be a problem when I'm there.

Utilize the power of Yelp to find places to eat. Around the Drake area, BBQ seems to be pretty popular. Check out this place called "Jethros". The portions are huge for what you pay for and there was an episode of "Man vs. Food" shot there.

Mine is 9/20. I feel like I got some really good tips from my advisor today for the interview so I'm really looking forward to it!

Here's a list of some of the better/more unique places to eat in Des Moines. These are some of the most popular to go in DSM. I left off the really expensive ones so all these should be affordable. You can google them and get more info!

-Miyabi 9 (sushi)
-Flying Mango (barbeque)
-Fong's Pizza (Chinese food.... on pizza 😀)
-Z'Mariks (noodles)
-Thai Flavors (Thai/Chinese)
-Zombie Burger + Drink Lab
-Jethro's BBQ
-Star Bar (burgers/American... also located a few blocks from DMU)
-Mi Mexico
-Wellman's on Ingersoll (this is a bar/pub but it's right by DMU so a lot of students go there)

Jethro's it is! Thanks guys 🙂 I'm really excited about driving to an interview and actually being able to get around and find things to eat. DMU and KCUMB are the only two I'll be able to drive to so far. I guess I could drive to Loyola (chicago), but then I'd have to find and pay for parking. It ends up being only a little more expensive to fly.. though there's much, much less hassle and it's faster.

Good choice 🙂 Go to the one on Forest Ave near Drake because that's only about a mile from DMU. Near DMU, "Ingersoll Ave" is pretty popular - there are several bars and restaurants that students go to a lot. You should check out the downtown area. Near downtown you have the Court Ave district and the East Village which have good shopping and nightlife. Gray's Lake is absolutely beautiful and has a little beach and a 2.5ish mile walking trail around it. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the area! Des Moines is a great place to live - you get all the comforts of the Midwest with more of a "city" feel to it.

Sounds like St. Louis. I really love the Midwest and I'm hoping to stay here for school. Thanks for the info!

I'm flying out tomorrow for my interview on Thursday! Exciting!

My departure flight from Des Moines is at 5:30 pm. Will I be able to to make it to the airport in time?

The latest interview time is 2:45 and lasts ~30 minutes. I think you'd be fine.

Thanks.

Also, I was reading through the interview email and it says that the admissions office opens at 8:00 am and that the interview day will begin at 8:30. Does that mean we should arrive around 8am or should we aim for coming more toward 8:30am?

I got there at 8:10 or so and around half of us were already present.

I had a 2:45 interview and I was done by 3:45, the interview in front of me went long, and got through security by 4:30... Super small airport Thats not very busy, you should be fine 🙂

I was told to avoid traffic in the morning so I left early and arrived around 7:50ish but the office was closed.... Staff arrived at 8 so any earlier you might be waiting for them

Early is good! Just don't come before 7AM because the building will be locked 😀

But seriously I've seen students on the floor below admissions where there's a cafeteria and coffee shop around 7:30AM or so. They grab a cup of coffee and chillax for a bit and head up to admissions around 8.

Ok, sad news... for everyone I told that I might be able to meet with you all on Thursday before your Friday interviews, I apologize but I probably won't be able to. 🙁 Very sorry! But there are lots of great places on Ingersoll (the street next to Grand, where the school is)... or just walk around downtown for a couple hours and enjoy!

So that's a no go on the 27th? Sniff sniff, sadface.

I meant for this Thursday/Friday. I've learned to never commit to things that are more than a day in advance during medschool, hahah. I'll let you guys know if I'll be able to do the 27th as the date approaches.

Good luck to all the upcoming interviewers though! 🙂

Hey no worries! We understand. Just do good in school bro!

Anyone going to be staying at the Hampton Inn Des Moines Airport tomorrow (Wednesday) night? Is there anything to do in that area? Is it close to downtown?

Apparently downtown Des Moines is awesome. I might leave earlier (driving up on the 16th) than planned just to see it more.

Really, really hoping to get an interview here. My last LOR writer didn't get his in until yesterday (which puts it at over three months since I asked). 😡 My secondary and other letters were in the first week of July...

Ah, well. My stats are pretty good and I'm all about the rural primary care and my EC's show it. I'd gladly give up II's from a few other schools for a chance here! 😀

Downtown is about a 5-minute (maybe 10 in traffic) drive from the airport. But yes, it is fantastic 😀 Calling a cab will probably cost $15 ish.

I'm in the same boat here. I've been waiting and waiting for my committee letter and they're finally going to send it out this week. I'm also interested in rural primary care. Here's hoping for some invites before all the slots fill!
