Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Had my DMU interview yesterday. Facilities were really new and nice like everyone mentioned. Des Moines seemed sleepy and maybe a bit slow-paced compared to what I'm normally used to, but I didn't really get to see anything other than the drive from the hotel to the airport. Day started with each applicant telling a little about themselves, we had a few talks, tour of the simulation and surgery lab, OMM demonstration, and lunch with current DO students. Then it was a tour or interview, depending on what time your interview was scheduled. There was a good group of interviewees that I talked with throughout the day, and I even met at least one fellow SDN'er.

My actual interview was a bit strange though...if you're assigned a plastic surgeon, you should be prepared for some odd questions. He was nice, but I think he was trying to throw me off. The other interviewer was great, and overall it went well for me other than for the odd questions (questions about the history of my undergrad, medical history questions).

Hope to have an acceptance here within three weeks! And good luck to everyone else!

eekk..when you say your interview was strange, do you mean they were grilling you over difficult questions? please elaborate.

i had a similar experience at a different school where one interviewer was very conversational and the other interviewer kept interrupting to ask some "tough" questions.

I had the plastic surgeon today. I was talking to current students and he tries to throw you off on purpose.

Overall my experience was amazing today. DMU is really my #1 choice now. The students and faculty were amazing and VERY friendly! To top off the day I left the school, turned on my phone and had two more II's waiting on my phone. Great day overall.

Tough(ish) questions and just a touch testy. But nothing over the top or anything. Just trying to see how you act under pressure for sure.

Withdrew my interview for Oct. 20th today. Good luck everyone

I guess I just wasn't prepared for those types of questions and thought it would be "conversational" like everyone else's.

The types of questions he asked me were related to the history of medicine and my undergraduate institution. He also made a suggestion about the health care system that would be unethical, but I think he was might have been trying to get a response for me. All I said was "there are some ethical issues with that" and left it at that. Hope I get in even after all of that.

don't beat yourself up. Looking back at my first interview this year I'm pretty sure I said some really inept things because I was nervous, specifically when it came to the ethical questions. I'm hoping that this won't hold me back. I guess I'll let you know in a week or two...

Ditto! (Except I only had one II waiting...) but it was cool meeting you today!

awesome interview here today! i think everyone regrets at least one or two things they say in an interview haha.. i know i wish i would have worded a few answers differently.

the school is incredible.. the clinicals are my only hang-up, but not a deal breaker.

can't wait to hear back!

Really considering withdrawing from dmu since I got into nsu.

I bet you're considering withdrawing just about everywhere else, aren't you? Ha ha ha!

If you already have your plane tickets and hotel reservations, I would definitely go. Wasn't NSU your first interview? It's always good to see more than one school. DMU is pretty awesome too so you might be missing out if you cancel.

Yea that's why I'm considering still going. I am driving and the hotel will refund me if I cancel 24 hours in advance.

I would go to DMU over NSU but that's just me.

the dean told us that 50% of the 3rd years stay in des moines 20% go to more rural communities in Iowa, and the rest are shipped out to michigan and ohio. everything is based on a lottery. It's pretty similar to a lot of DO schools, but I am hoping to just stay put for that 3rd year. if you like to travel then its a plus!

Also forgot to mention that I did not have a student interviewer. Do you think this will hurt my chances at an acceptance?

If you want to stay in Iowa, it won't be s problem. You might have to travel a bit, but that comes with any site you get. Plus by the time you are on rotations, we might not have those Ohio and Michigan sites. Things change every year and usually for the better.

No and sometimes the student interviewers are the hardest ones on the interviewees.

Couples reasons:

Been around a lot longer (like 70 years longer), heard very many good things about the school, it's not humid heat like florida, plus some badasses like Toytles and FrkyBgStok go there... just to name a few.😎

To some extent, I don't really care which state I live in for school, but wherever it is I want to stay in that one place as long as possible. And when I say in one place, I mean as close to the school as possible. Moving as little as possible is my main goal I think.

Bro, your life is totally your own, but may I suggest you still go to DMU? The fact that you even question it is a good indicator that you should go. Especially now that you've got an acceptance, you will only do this interview process for med schools ONCE! Don't sell yourself short or cut yourself off from the opportunity to learn more about medicine and another school. My interviews have helped to shape and change me in many ways, and I've taken valuable lessons away from each. Just my $0.02

I can vouch for FrkyBgStok. He was super legit to hang out with today!

No offense to those guys, but NeuroLAX goes to nsu. I know older schools are almost always a safe bet but hasn't nova been around a long time too?

I welcome all advice, especially from the dude. I know you're right and I think I'm scared of getting into multiple schools that I like equally then being stuck having to choose... I know i know that's not something I should complain about.

I'm definitely excited to see DMU, but I'm dreadimg the drive there.

How long of a drive is it?

About 6 hours. I've never driven more than 3.5.

Ha ha ha! If you've driven 3.5 you've driven 7, right? Seriously, it's not that bad. Just have a good playlist, book on tape, and snacks and its actually fun! Of course this is coming from someone who drives for a living and has driven 13 hours straight a couple times.
Really though, totally worth it. That's close enough that I really think you should go for it.
Either way, congrats!

I had the same surgeon! I agree he definitely tried to throw me off too. Hopefully I didn't do too bad with my responses 😕

Yea I've already started working on a playlist. Any suggestions? I'll listen to anything that's in English.

Thanks hopeful. You were a great guy yourself. And Wily I seriously hope we can meet one day.

As for MedPR. I think you need to see DMU. I am biased of course, but many have told me that campus is much better than almost everything out there and I have spoken to at least 3 people that said they were super excited about NSU but their excitement was gone after seeing DMU. I really think you should at least check it out. Hit the public library and get a book on CD. Cuts down the time immensely.
Also, to those interviewing Monday, I finagled lunch and afternoon tours! So plan on meeting me.

I really wanted to interview at DMU last cycle but I submitted my apps way too late. My girlfriend's dad graduated from DMU and loved it. Excellent school. I have no complaints now, though. Glad you're liking it there 👍

Thanks....and uh.....sorry about bashing NSU a little. I shouldn't because I haven't even seen the school.

Sweet! I'll be the guy with a shaved head (not skin bald, but short) wearing a charcoal suit, and light blue shirt. You'll probably think I look Hispanic or Indian.

WTF? that is almost exactly what hopeful said. Uncanny! I will be the one that looks like none of the other med students. Meeting you at noon for lunch.

I had the same experience. I don't think having one less interviewer changes anything. I asked why I only had two and it was because they didn't have enough of the students to volunteer for the interview.

What''s all this talk about NSU in the DMU thread? GET IT OUT! DMU is the best.

Just kidding. But yeah, hope you all enjoyed your interview day! Woohoo!

Hopefully you can swing lunch etc for the 27th! I wanna meet you! I'll be the dude with a shaved head and charcoal suit...oh wait, no I won't. Charcoal suit and receding hairline (not receding actually, been like that my whole life, I swear) spiked neatly. I can totally pull off the shaved head look. In fact, I may shave it before I come out...

The shaved head look is nice and clean looking I think. As long as nobody thinks you are some sort of nazi. When I was younger I would REALLY shave it ( size 1 guard) and my friends would always tell me I looked like a german in the 1940's so I let it grow a little longer...
