Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

Hey guys,
sorry if this is a dumb question but I was accepted and just sent my deposit. I was wondering if I still need to send a letter of intent. I have yet to hear anything back from my state schools and so have pretty much assumed silent rejection. Also, regarding other schools that I have sent secondaries and been complete at, I would rank DMU over all of them. So at this point, I am pretty set on matriculating. do I need to send a letter?

Are you asking if you need to send a letter of intent to DMU even though you have already been accepted? The answer to that is no you don't.

Question for current DMU students: I've been accepted here and I wanted to clarify something.
Online I see that 4th year you must do 8 weeks of rotations in Family Medicine/Rural, Community or International medicine & 28 weeks of elective rotations.

Since audition rotations are important would I be able to use all 28 of those electives auditioning in a surgical specialty all over the country and the 8 wks in surgical Rural setting? Is that allowed? or does the 8weeks have to be in FM.

That is actually very, very good news, Badger! Thanks 🙂

And as for the ranking thing, it's not a huge deal. I would just really like to move away from the undergrad style of grading. More of a minor annoyance that I can definitely live with. Thanks again, for getting back to me!!! Much appreciated 🙂

from what I understand, you have a GPA and a ranking, but the ranking for your applications is based on quartiles So if there are 100 people class and you are on the first quartile, the residency program has no way of knowing if you are number 1 or number 25. They can figure it out and you can figure it out, but it isn't going to be the standard that programs are given. And it was told to us that DMU went this ways because this is the way most schools are either doing it, or the direction that most schools are going.

This is the info I have from Clinical Affairs Office:
4th Year Curriculum
Required Rotations (8 Weeks Total)
- Family Med - 8 weeks
OR
- Family Medicine - 4 weeks
PLUS
Rural, Community, or International Medicine - 4 weeks

I'm still not sure if that means surgery is included. My guess is that it would be if it were rural or community.

As for the other 28 weeks, you are only allowed 16 weeks above the requirement in the same specialty. So you can't do 28 extra weeks of general surgery, but you probably could do 16 weeks of general surgery with other rotations in cardiothoracic, trauma, vascular, and any of the other sub-specialties.

At least that is my understanding at this point.

interviewd on 10/19. Waitlisted. I was told that while my interviewers were impressed, my GPA is the reason for this WL. Sucks because this means no matter how I performed at the interview, my GPA was always going to put me on the WL.

Its a great school. Wish everyone else good luck!

not entirely accurate because if you would have performed badly on your interview, you could have been rejected. but stay hopeful... WL isn't the end.

🙁 I'm sorry about the waitlist!
They must have seen something past your GPA that they really liked about you if they invited you for an interview. I understand that the waitlist moves pretty good so I hope you still get offered a seat!

I just interviewed yesterday. Originally I didn't really know how much I loved this school but as the day wore on, through a combination of things I realized how amazing this school is. DMU you totally won me over I'm willing to brave the cold and everything! Good luck to everyone else! 🙂

I have my fingers crossed for you! Good luck.🙂

According to last year's thread , the waitlist doesn't really have much movement. Michow from last cycle who is my stats twin got off the WL in July. I really don't think I am going to be able to not put down a deposit at any of the other schools that have accepted me and put myself in this position of uncertainty until July.

Ew, I wouldn't want to wait until July either. That sucks!!!

according to last years thread, they generally don't have waitlist movement, HOWEVER according to reality, I think they had a decent amount. That being said, it seems like everyone from last either got accepted or waitlisted. I don't remember seeing any or many post interview rejections. so they are clearly doing something different this year. they also had a record number of applicants this year. so if you are on the waitlist and are really interested, don't completely count yourself out.

Would you mind passing along the combination of things that won you over?

I think once they started showing me everything rather than telling me everything that made them amazing, I began to really see the benefits of the school. For example, a lot of schools prepare you for boards and this school in addition to that prepares you for your rotations 3rd and 4th year as well. They have surgery skills lab that prepare students for their surgery rotations so they don't completely feel like a fish out of water and they have a very good simulation lab where you run through the different sets of clinical skills in the hospital setting. Then they also prepare you for patient interactions say in an office setting so you get used to trying to diagnose patients while still interacting with them in a short amount of time. My tour guide was really good and showed us a lot of the school and seeing these things really showed me that they prepare you to have both street and book smarts so to speak. Also, the school has a high focus on OMM and prepares you really well to be well versed in it. And I liked that there seemed to be a lot of interaction with the Des Moines community like volunteering to have free OMM and PT for post-marathon runners or working with student athletes at nearby university. It was a whole mix of things! If you want to know more PM me but that's all I can think of for now, I've been traveling all day and my brain is tired. haha 😛

I just interviewed this Thursday. DMU looks and feels like a great school. The whole interview process was really laid back, and it felt as if the whole community was doing their best to make sure the day was as informative and low stress as possible.

And now I play the waiting game....

this and you get a genuine feeling that everyone who works or studies there really wants to be there. from the current students/tour guides, to the administration, and the OMM fellow.

you definitely would put down a deposit at another school and continue waiting. then if you get off the WL, just forget about the deposit and make it back later.

For those accepted but not attending, how do you decline their offer? I got a letter saying that they would appreciate a written response. Do I just email the admissions office?

I think that would work. I sent a letter to LECOM-E when I declined there.

How'd you manage that? I called the day after my invite and she said that I'd get a call if an earlier date pops up.

they told me this too but like the annoying premed I am , I still called on my own every few days and was able to reschedule to a much earlier date.

Congrats! you've been patiently waiting for that!

Thanks! Luckily I was able to move it up by more than a month. I have an interview at KCOM this week and will be staying in Des Moines afterwards. I am planning on checking out the DMU campus while there.

There was a DMU podiatry student at my work last week seeing a patient in the ER. I almost ran up and hugged him. lol
That would have been weird.

Anyone else interviewing here 11/09? I am very excited about the student hosting situation...

Let me refer you to this post

EDIT: I realize that the post might be missing the information that though you might not be guaranteed a year-long site in Des Moines, it is fairly easy to get a non year-long Iowa and you will probably have a good portion of your rotations in the great Des Moines area

Sounds like there is no consideration for students with school-aged kids? My high schoolers would be most displeased to 1) move again or 2) spend a year without their mom (yeah, I know, it's weird--they like me)

During interview day, the dean said it was a lottery system

I have the same concern, only my husband and I are trying for our first, which will be 10 hrs or so away from the grandparents. I really wouldn't want to have to do too much moving with a toddler. You are not alone!

Dibs on occasional babysitting!
(I love babies)

My wife and I will be in the same situation.

he also said that this year he's letting the sites choose 50% of their applicants. so i am sure if you said "i have kids who want to stay in des moines" the hospital admin at those hospitals will sympathize with you. furthermore, he also said that they do take special consideration. the example he gave was you had to help take care of a family member who was sick.

Here's to hoping my wife gets sick the third year of medical school!! :meanie:
(just kidding...seriously)

Wow, everyone is either dating or married with kids/hoping or planning to have kids!

Are there any single people out there attending DMU? I am starting to think that DocEspana's posts about medical school relationships/dating are true.

+1

I'm going to die bitter and alone.
