Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Welp, just got an email from DMU. Placed on pre-interview hold.

I waited 58 days for a response...only to be told that I now need to wait an indefinite amount of time more

Me right now:

At least it's better than a rejection... Has anyone been placed on hold and received an interview invite?

Yeah I got that too. What really irritates me is that if I'd submitted my DO letter on the same day I submitted my secondary there's a very good change I would have qualified for fast track and gotten an interview here.

Alas, I no longer really care because I don't think I'd chose DMU over KCOM anyway... but it definitely would have been nice to tour what is without doubt the most widely praised DO school on this forum.

Exactly. Reading on SDN about how awesome DMU is convinced me to add it, and then made me want to get an II haha

sadface.

This is what I said about it (except with another school, not KCOM) before my interview. Flipped that so quick after interview day. Now it's my #1 out of all the DO schools. There's a reason it's so highly praised!

Yeah I completely understand that. For example, I thought Nova was amazing and even briefly considered canceling my trip to Missouri to save money.. then ended up falling in love with KCUMB and KCOM and essentially knocking NSU off my mind.

Attending multiple interviews is well worth the financial and emotional drain for the simple fact that you can put things in perspective. For that reason I'd love to interview at DMU, even if I walk away utterly unimpressed. So... fingers crossed.

I'm A rural family medicine passionate kid, 3.9 gpa w/ 32 mcat - I've applied to 3 DO schools but this one looks good. I don't know why I didn't remember to add it back in August, but would it be worth a try this late? I really would love their scholarship for 3.6/30+ students.

Yes, definitely worth a shot with your awesome stats and interest in rural medicine. Just FYI in case you don't know, you must have a letter from a DO that you shadowed in order to apply to DMU. Good luck!

Actually a DO letter is not required, just a physician letter (DO or MD). Obviously, a DO letter would be better.

Oh right, thanks 🙂 For some reason I had it in my head that DMU wanted a DO letter but you are correct!

The letter needs to expound on exposure to medicine, as opposed to mere proximity (i.e. working with DO/MD PI at the lab)

Got an II today by email (day 61 for me) and I scheduled it for Dec 14. Would have gone with this Thursday except that airfaire is ridiculous right now for me to get flights for this Wednesday. Hoping to get accepted to KCUMB so I don't have to fork out the money for this interview!

Congrats! This morning I was able to reschedule mine from December 13th to November 15th.

Got an II today! So excited! I will be around the area on Nov 16th (coming from California), but the date is already filled. Do you think it would be okay to call them to ask if they can fit me in?

Yeah of course. You don't want to pay that airfare twice.

Scratch that. I'll be cancelling that interview and withdrawing as I just got accepted at KCUMB!

How did you reschedule your interview? Just wondering, because I called to ask if I could move my interview up (from a date in December) and they haven't gotten back to me...

I just tried rescheduling over the phone and the only open dates were in late January. Guess ill keep my original date haha

I called and asked if there was a closer date available and they took down my information to call me if if there was an opening. This was two weeks ago and they never called me, but I asked again this morning and there was an opening.

FYI Nov 8 was available when I checked this morning!

I just sent an email to the admissions office informing them that I am withdrawing my invite to interview on Monday, 11/19/2012. Good luck to everybody!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I found out last week that I was waitlisted. I called admissions upset and they said my interview went great, but my MCAT score was a red flag. I am really upset, I wish I would have just been denied up front instead of going to the interview day and falling in love with the school!

Thanks for the info! I just called again, and they said they didn't have any earlier openings. They took down my name and number AGAIN, so hopefully they don't think I'm super annoying for asking again haha. They were very nice about it, though.

I'm interviewing here on 11/9 and just wondering if anyone has any tips? What's it like on interview day, etc?

Also, I'm staying at the Hampton Inn and get in pretty early in the day on the 8th. Would anyone want to get together to tour the town/grab dinner?

Looking forward to meeting those of you on interview day!

See page 14 of this thread for my synopsis of the interview day. Good luck!!

I'd definitely check out the school if you have time before you interview as a dry run so you know how to get there. Also, be relaxed for the interview and know that your perception of time is different while interviewing.

Does anyone know any more specifics about the Global Health Pathway? There's not much online, and I emailed but haven't heard anything back. I got an email yesterday about the Rural Health Pathway that was more descriptive, but nothing else.

Just marked complete today, what you think my chances are? 3.4,3.3, 25Q URM

Hi Guys!
I'm assuming its 2 faculty interviews + 1 student interview. No Panel or MMI right? Are the interviews open file or just the faculty?

Thank you all!!!

It's a three-person panel of (usually) 2 faculty members and a student (or at least mine was). Interviews are open file. All three of my interviews had their own copy of my app.

Does anyone know when DMU tells students what type of computer they're getting?

I know you sign up for a day a week or two before orientation where you go get your computers and your ID badges. In the past several years, it's been Toshiba laptops. However, I have heard some rumors that they might do away with the computers so hopefully we'll get some more info about that in the coming months.

Hey thanks. I remembered they went with laptops last year, heard some rumors on campus during my interview day about maybe getting iPads next year, but had no idea when they'd tell us exactly what we'd be getting.

question: i was complete about a month ago...is everyone for dmu that isn't getting the fast track interviews pretty much doomed to wait 60 days?

No, it appears some hear back faster than others. For me it was 61 days exactly.

Nope! I was complete on 7/24 and got invited to interview on 8/6 - this was a non-fast track interview invite.

that's good to hear. DMU is my favorite, and after seeing all of these people accepted I'm starting to get nervous!
