Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does DMU ask the ever so scary 'Tell me about yourself'? Least favorite interview question by far 😛

First question I got. I think it's the easiest because you are literally telling them who you are. How is that hard?

I never know exactly what and how much detail to hit. I don't want to say too much and waste valuable follow up questions that keep the convo fluent and smooth

You guys are over thinking it. Just be yourself and be conversational. The interviews here are super chill and the faculty and second year students genuinely wanna get to know you. Don't feel like you have to say or not say certain things. And definitely don't go in there with an internal clock about how much depth you need to go into for each question and whether that will take time away from follow up questions. Again...just be yourself and be conversational. Its seriously the best advice I can given anyone who really wants to do well on the interviews and get into this school.

Cold weather do you know what the acceptance rate for interviewed candidates is?

When i interview candidates, I talk to the people having lunch with them and answering questions, tell them to make sure the candidates know how chill the interview is. Then, when they walk in my room, I ask them what schools they applied to, how many MD schools, how do we fix the rural physician shortage, come up with 5 words that descibe you and why, what are your views on religion, what is your sexual orientation, what do your parents and siblings do for a living, what percentage of men over 50 get colonoscopies as recommended, what are the classic symptoms of multiple myeloma, and what is your ultimate goal in medicine. So yeah, it is super chill. And fun!

this is how all the interviews are.

😀 Yup, pretty light! How'd you guys feel today?

You forgot the questions regarding abortion and stem cell research.

Well they said they interview around 700 and I would estimate they accept around 400 (double their class size of 221)

Does anyone know when the admissions committee is going to met next? Angela said it could take up to 4 weeks to hear back and Im really hoping to hear sooner than that!

Btw this school is amazing, I'm in love 😍

Sometime next week they are supposed to meet to review some of the earliest interviewees. Then I *think* they meet every other week.

Up to 4wks? She told us we should hear something back within 21 days. I just want to know! 🙂

Thanks love.:xf: that they get to yesterday's applicants then as well.

If anyone is considering rescheduling an Oct 14 or 17 interview PLEASE let me know! Thanks and goodluck everyone!

As far as living situations go... are there places any of you current students would recommend living?

Random Q: Is this post-interview survey anonymous?

Withdrawing my app, hope one of you can take my spot 😉. GL to you all, this is a great school.

I don't know if I can wait two- three weeks for a decision. I'm not sure about how my interview went either. It's honestly a blur to me right now

Same..and Same!

Same..and Same!

It's been 2 days and this wait is killin me.

I wish they would have given a clearer idea of when we would be hearing back. The packet says 2-3 weeks, Angela said it could be up to 4 weeks and at the end one of my interviewers said 1-2 weeks. :scared::scared::scared:

Also I did look back on last years thread and most people heard back within 1 or 2 weeks, but I know the first interview group hasn't heard back yet and that was almost 3 weeks ago.

Ah crap, I think my pre-med neuroticism has reached epic proportions. Balls.

No kidding. I know its easier said than done, but just try to do your best to relax guys. Our admissions committee meets frequently and the difference is between 1-2 weeks and 3-4 weeks is really nothing. Both are a QUICK turn around when you compare, on average, how long some other schools take to get back to you with a decision. Don't refresh your emails repetitively. Go out and enjoy yourselves!

Is there a way to check online the status of my application?

I received my email from DMU this morning...I am on the alt list. Sigh.

Im sorry to hear that dear.

At least ur not outta the game yet, plus u have 2 more interviews right?

Any idea why u were alt listed?

True!

Yes I had one on the 27th at kcumb and one scheduled at KCOM on the 14th.

And I will email them about feedback...

I am in!!!!!!! Yesssss!!!!!! 😀😀😀

three weeks ago this friday.. I am so happy! I hate to show off but this school is amazing, im near tears haha

so it looks like they are giving decision to interviewees of the 9/13 date. Congrats on your acceptance, show off all you want. You deserve it!

So I called them and they said it was my MCAT score...that it was just below their average and based on the pool they wanted to maintain that competitive average. So there it is....well, positive thinking .... It wasn't an outright reject.

Oh crap my GPA is below there average so I will get wait listed/ or rejected as well 🙁

Well, maybe not! Don't go there just yet. That's just what she told me about me....maybe GPA is differently viewed than the MCAT. Think positive!!!

Unless you are being a tiny bit sarcastic......

Key word here: AVERAGE. Meaning there has to be people above and below it. Don't freak out.

Damn then why even bother to interview you? They already know your MCAT score prior to the invite...

That was kinda my thought?? She said nothing about my interview...but maybe I just didn't give myself enough sparkle to get them over the MCAT score.

Like I said at least it wasn't an outright rejection. But I don't think DMU's wait list moves a lot.
