Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Secondary received and submitted today!! The last question with the 900 limit I nearly filled up. I don't think that is a bad thing, I just had a lot to say. I was at like 827.

Size matters not. Judge me by my size, do you? Say what ya gotta. Quality over...well, ya know. 🙂 Good luck, 2018ers.

When they ask for a physician's contact info under the rural experience and osteopathic physician experience, do they want the rural physician or the osteopathic physician?

I'm confused about this as well! 😕

got an email saying supplemental received. now we wait......

anyone notice the little addendum at the end of the app saying clinical rotation sites are not limited to Des Moines and that students should be prepared to move ?

Either way, DMU remains a top choice for me--though I thought it was interesting that they explicitly stated that.

Yeah....I know OB rotations are sometimes "outsourced" due to size limits (my OB went to DMU) and he said that they do allow med students to rotate through their office but only a few and you have to get in your pick rotation assignment choice early.
While I was doing job shadow with ENT and anesthesia I saw a couple DMU students come through, and I know they do family medicine as my FP DO takes students from DMU....just not sure how many get to do DSM rotations in other rotations...or if there are spot limits or something.

I know that the rotation sites through Ohio University CORE are open to DMU students on a space available basis...

Got the secondary today 🙂

secondary recieved! good luck guys. On the secondary, is a rural practitioner also considered a PCP? Also, can ER physicians in an underserved area pass for PCP?

+2.

Those completed, how did you fill in this part?

I used pediatric ER physician as pcp. Rural physician is less than 15,000 pop. I live in Houston. I certainly do not have rural experience so I just said none.

The contact info is asked under rural so I thought its for rural. They didn't ask for one for osteopathic.

I was just referring to the formatting here.

The questions are:
Experience with osteopathic physician?
Rural Experience?
and then right after is the field that you can list a physician and their details

Did you list your osteopathic physician here? Or is this field for the rural experience physician only?

Since it is right after rural I took it is for the rural physician. There is one right after experience with pcp also so I figured it was for pcp. I would think they forgot to place one after osteopathic, it would only make sense to have a space for each one.

I did the exact same thing as PediDoc. No rural experience for me.

Wonder how long it will take to hear about possible ii

About how long after secondaries came out did fast track IIs come out last year? Anyone know?

From last year it looks like secondary’s came out around July 5th. I saw a few people that submitted around the 12th/13th that got fast tracks around the 16th. It seems like fast tracks came out in batches between middle of July and the beginning of August.

Between getting the seconday around July 5th, I think my fast-track II came on the 11th... it wasn't even a week, I don't think. I was surprised I was selected for it. I do not know what the selection criteria are, they never said anything about it. Basically, it means you get an interview even though you may not have all of your letters/other forms submitted yet. I did have my secondary competed and turned in before they sent the II, I don't remember if that was a requirement for the II or not.

Just checked my old emails, let me correct myself: secondary received 7/6, fast-track II on 7/16, scheduled my interview for the second interview day, September 9th (a Friday). Last year the first interview day was Thursday, Sept. 8th.

The email reads:

"Because of your competitive qualifications, we encourage you to schedule your interview day at DMU even before all of the supporting documents arrive to complete your file! But plan to complete your file prior to your interview date."

I emailed DMU to check on my application materials, and accidently gave them my AMCAS info 😛 whoops.

O_O Nice! I really would've sworn I was interviewing for a waitlist spot by the time I interviewed at DMU! Late January. Kinda late app though (competed in late August). Do you know what kinda numbers, in general, warrant that kinda love (fast track) from DMU?

I have no idea. I submitted my app & secondary before I had even retaken the MCAT, so they had my old scores which I thought sucked. But I had a 3.96 UG sGPA and a 3.7 graduate cGPA. I don't know if that was it or not. From what my interviewer said, it might have been my graduate degree, though.

Your numbers are very solid basically anywhere (depending on UG cGPA). I wonder why your state school took so long. 😕

Submitted. Now we play the waiting game

Yeah, as a graduate student I got in-state tuition, but it's not the same for professional school. Go figure.

Wow last year's first ii came out July 16. But then again last year's supplemental didn't have an essay question.....

Hope we all hear some good news soon

Does anyone know how to check whether or not they have recieve all of your letters of rec yet? I cant seem to find it when I review my supplemental (submitted and paid for).

Yeah, send them an email. They are quick to respond and very friendly. Eventually you'll receive a final "complete" email after they process everything, but in the meantime they can confirm that they have everything.

* Have you had exposure to a D.O.? Yes No
If so, describe your clinical experience with an Osteopathic Physician?

* Describe any clinical exposure you have had with a primary care physician (family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, or OBGYN)

chances are if you had exposure to a DO, he/she was a primary care physician. How did you guys and gals go about dressing these two questions? I feel like if you answer 1 that you're answering 2 as well, eh?

For me, the only Rural doctor I shadowed happened to be a Family Med (MD) so I honestly put same as above for the box. Probably not the best way to do it but I didn't really know what else to write...😕

The DOs I shadowed were both surgeons so I probably had a somewhat unique answer for the Osteo one...

For the "describing clinical experience with the doctors" questions, can you just copy paste from AACOMAS? I listed each individual doctor on the primary and talked about the general experience.

I put basically the same info on the secondary as I did on AACOMAS...I added that I have been a patient of a DO since grade school since that is also "exposure" to a DO for me, at least.

2 days for me. Fingers crossed....

Gotcha. I received an email Saturday saying they've received my secondary, and that I'd get a final confirmation email after they processed all my stuff. Hopefully soon! Everything is in so...

I just submitted my secondary.

Man I'd love to go to DMU. Hoping for some love, despite an MCAT that is lower than the average.

Hi everyone!
I just received my June 20th MCAT scores and I'm freaking out. Do I have a chance at DMU with an 11V/7P/9B MCAT score and a 3.9 GPA? (plus tons of research, etc). I know I screwed up the physical. 7 is such a low score. 🙁

Is this a serious post?
