Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I did it!!!!!!
Accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats! I am super happy for you! I could tell by your previous posts how much you wanted this! Maybe we'll even be classmates 🙂

So I just passed through Des Moines on my way to interview tomorrow at KCUMB. Check my email to find one from DEpaul University...what a tease right?

Check it 20 minutes later and this time it's the real deal..ACCEPTED!! 🙂 So happy!

Now back to dancing alone in my car! 🙂

Congrats everyone. Maybe see you next year!

Congrats to all who got accepted!! YOU MADE IT INTO MED SCHOOL!!! You should be so proud of yourselves! 🙂 I'm a current first year and one of your tour guides/interview ambassadors so some of you may have met me. I just wanted let you know to join the DO-18 Facebook group even if you are still not sure about attending DMU. It's a great place to ask questions to current students both first and second years. We will be honest and give you some tips on housing and how to prepare yourselves for actual med school. SO JUST JOIN even if you are undecided! Current students do not read SDN as much anymore. The 2nd years have been so awesome to us first years and we are going to pay it forward to you guys DO-18ers. Congrats again!

Since acceptances have already been handed out I need to ask what my late submit odds are.

Needed info:

In state, 30Q, 3.7, independent research, clinical shadowing, collegiate athlete, currently work at a biomedical research company
DMU secondary complete October 4th.

I know number-wise I'm competitive, my only worry is that I applied too late. Got extremely busy with work during early summer and when I did get AACOMAS submitted it took FORever to be verified... but hey, thus is life.

You're fine.

You'll most likely get an interview and even if all the spots are taken by then (highly unlikely) You could get waitlisted. Our class has a ton of people off of the waitlist. What you should be more worried about is if you do get accepted here then you will probably be beat down on the basketball court.

Haha nice! Do you guys play a lot? Is it bad if I base my decision on where to attend around your answer?

Hey here's a question for the First and Second Years, does anyone have any info about the Rural Education Pathway program? I read about it on the school's website but I am curious to know more about how it works.

Is it even likely that a first year will receive the scholarship?
If you get the scholarship one year do you automatically, or more easily receive it subsequent years too?
When they say you have to serve in a capacity of a general FM, IM, Peds physician in a rural setting does that mean you cannot sub-specialize before serving your year for year commitment or can you sub-specialize but you just have to give those years of general service in Iowa after sub-specializing.

Thanks for any help!

Signed up for MCAT re-test in January! My new score will be competitive and I hope it won't be too late by then. I'm still on the "hold to interview" list so that's a plus. Just such a long and stressful wait.....................................................

My AACOMAS is being verified and I've been debating if I should add DMU to the list.

My Stats are:
cGPA: 3.75
sGPA: 3.6
MCAT: 25 (8,8,9)

Should I add? Heard they want high MCAT.

No good. How'd it go otherwise??

Everyone was really nice. My interview lasted so long that my interviewers had to essentially kick me out of the room. I really liked the facilities. Everything is so updated. The surgical skills lab is impressive.

The new dean of the COM may be the most charismatic person I have ever met. I don't know if it was just me, but he totally had that je ne said quoi. I will buy any Kool-Aid that he sells. Haha

I totally felt the same way! He is an amazing guy.

Yeah I was able to move mine up by almost a month when someone else switched dates. Just pay attention to this thread usually ppl will post if they cancel their date.

Also im a fan of your name. Im picturing a tabby in downward dog which makes me smile.

Glad you like the name! Cats are good at yoga, you know, even if it is a downward dog!

I WAS able to move up my interview day (Now Nov 22). I just called/emailed every few days. Really looking forward to visiting the school

When were you complete? I have been waiting for a month now and I haven't heard any thing back yet..not sure if I should be worried..thanks

I was complete on Aug 23rd and yeah, didn't get the invite until Oct 4. Got interviews at KCUMB and KCOM much more quickly so the DMU wait was disconcerting. There are several other D.O. schools I've applied to and haven't heard a peep from. Good luck to those still waiting! 🙂

Congrats guys! Hope the interview day was helpful and answered most of your questions about the school. Hope to see you guys here next year!

Anybody?

Aside from emails, has anyone who was accepted received any correspondence from DMU via snail mail? 😕 Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything!

I haven't gotten anything via snail mail.

FYI to those who are interviewing in the future, DSM's TSA line is not the most efficient. It took me 45 minutes to get through it last week at around 3 PM, and by the time I got to my gate, it was last call.

Can anyone attest to how laid-back the interviews are at DMU...I've heard good things, just wanted to see if anyone got any hard ethics questions or felt grilled in general. Getting pretty nervous for mine in a couple weeks.

I didn't get asked any ethical questions. I did get asked about 1 course I got a C in and my less than stellar MCAT. But it wasn't accusatory or anything like that, more of a chance to explain myself. Don't get too worried about it, try and relax

As I have mentioned before, I would not be nervous at all. The interviews are extremely laid back. No grilling or any even remotely close to it. The faculty genuinely want to get to know. Thats how I and most of of my classmates felt about the interview, and those that have been interviewing this year have been saying the same.

To help make things easier, here are some things to think over for the interview:
1. Why DO? (when you practice answering this question, trying answering it without using the word holistic. No really, I am being serious).
2. Why DMU? What attracts you to this school?
3. What do you like about Des Moines?
4. Tell us about yourself? What are some of your strengths/weaknesses (always good to keep these in mind)
5. What do you think will be some challenges during first year and what have you done to help you prepare for those challenges.

^ I would take the time to think these things over. You never know who may ask you about any of the questions mentioned above. Thats not to say that you should be memorizing what to say if you get asked any of the specific questions above (because I believe the interviewers will be able to tell when you have "programmed" or pre-planned answer--and I think that can ultimately hurt you in the interview if you do that), but just give the questions some thought and brain storm some ideas about the questions stated above.

I would not be nervous, the school is great at making you feel at ease. I did get a question about ever having performed an unethic/illegal act and one of the docs started laughing, but still something you might want to cover, just in case. Other than that the usual questions about you and clarification on your app, they really dig into it before you get there so don't be surprised. Best of luck and grab em cookies when you can !!

For those who interviewed here, how do you guys feel about their system for setting up rotations in 3rd and 4th year? I loved everything about the school but I just feel like their rotations aren't as structured as other schools.

Actually, I prefer DMU's method. They give a lottery system for 3rd year with core rotations and for fourth year it seems you are free to roam for those 28 weeks wherever you see fit, which means you have more opportunities to extend olive branches to hospitals you really want to do residency at. This may also explain why so many of DMU students get competitive residencies and end up all over the US

Ya it does seem to be a bit of moving around during those two years, and something that is of concern for me, because I would prefer to have everything close by. The third year is more structured, as someone said, but the fourth its on your own. Idk how easy it is to set up the rotations in fourth year but its seems as bit scary

Hey when is the second look thing?
I can't find my dang folder

Quick question that anyone with info can answer. SO Im on the "hold to interview" list because of my less than stellar MCAT score. I signed up to take it again in January so I will have my new score in February which WILL BE competitive. What are the chances they are still interviewing in March-April?

I'm interviewing here Oct 31! Anyone else coming to town for a good ol' Halloween interview? Also, if anyone has some last-minute tips I would really appreciate them. I've been reading through the forum, so I know the material that is already on here but more preparation is always a good thing right?
