endodontic residency 2021 application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it smart to submit your application before all the official scores are loaded, LOR, deans letter, ect. Pretty much pushing apply even though you are waiting on somethings to come in?

As long as you all get everything in by that 1st week of June you’ll be fine. You can submit things as they become ready, but you won’t get interview invitations without a completed app. I submitted all my supplemental stuff before PASS could be submitted, one program did email me asking what the status of my PASS was. I didn’t get any invites until the entire app was submitted and completed. If you were running behind on letters, etc. and it was later in June it may be beneficial, but it doesn’t make a different right now.

Is there a reason this is being discredited? Or do y’all just not know this list comes out every year. UoP has stated to the ADA that in 2020 is not requiring the ADAT, but it will accept it.
BTW, for Chicago this is what it says on their website:
  • ADAT required-***NOTE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the ADAT will be accepted but not required for the 2020 ADEA admissions cycle.***

They are not required as far as I know. Go to the program's website and check it. ADAT is one of materials used for consideration, but is not a requirement as per the website. If you really want the confirmation, you can always give them a call or email them.

I just got an email from NYU that they have received my PASS application. The problem is I still haven't submitted mine...Has this happened to anyone?

Nope. Just started the general application, started getting my scores in, but haven't submitted anything.
Yeah same. Haven’t started any supplemental application either.

My transcript was uploaded this afternoon so everything is in for me. Now comes the waiting game. Good luck everyone!

Hello everyone,

How do I go about posting my ADAT scores to PASS? I took the test last June and selected the schools that I wanted to receive the scores. I was under the assumption that it would automatically be uploaded to PASS, but it hasn't as of now.

I tried requested a score report from the ADA website but PASS is not one of the options like it is when requesting NBDE scores.

What do I have to do? Any help is appreciated.

Does the check status of each program on PASS change to "complete" once when you get all the requirements in?

Yup! Just takes some time for them to upload. If you call them, it speeds things up a little with the uploading lol

This is the release statement you sign at the beginning of your PASS application:

"By selecting Yes, you authorize ADEA PASS to release your name and contact information to your designated programs before you submit your application. Your designated programs can then send you important information about their admissions process before you submit your application. "

Generally speaking, I believe most endodontic programs prefer GP experience. Anyone know why?

IMO- because endo can be a pain in the butt and they want you to appreciate that before going in. Honestly sometimes I finish 2-3 hard endos in a day, my fingers are sore and blistered, and I wonder how specialists do this all day, everyday. It's hard on the mind and body, but rewarding like nothing else!

I just know some programs care more about GP experience than others, hopefully someone will have some insight for specific programs to help a brother out

Generally speaking, I believe most endodontic programs prefer GP experience. Anyone know why?

A couple reasons. A bread and butter Endo is generally a 1st or 2nd molar, with extensive decay, and symptoms. Managing this type of case is not bread and butter for a student straight out of school. Evaluating/ diagnosing/ managing patient/ treating / and restoring is going to be a handful for the student. Sure they can do it, but it will take guidance, oversight, and time. The programs that want experience don’t want to have to help with your access, diagnosis, or your glide path. Sure they will discuss it in lit and lectures, but they don’t want to have to step in for that in clinic. They want to monitor surgeries, resorption cases, regenerations, etc. That calcified #15 with SIP/ SAP they expect you to take your CBCT, access, EDTA, and get down it. And this is all while using the microscope and only an assistant to access with.

Secondly, you are very busy outside of clinic. So you need to be able to knock your cases out during the day fairly efficiently so you can get to your lit review, presentations, research, etc.

Having said all that, it’s still just preference. Some programs could care less about that and don’t mind working side by side with students and helping them traverse that steep learning curve. They like molding the young students because they have no bad habits and aren’t stubborn. But the programs that want experience, just want students to come in and know how to access, instrument, and place gutta percha. They are more focused on fine tuning and broadening those skills. Just really a teaching preference.

Has anyone submitted their application with only one letter of evaluation completed? I'm still waiting on 2 more to be completed, other than that I'm ready to submit my application and I'm getting a little impatient.

You aren't able to submit with just 1 I believe. You are still really early though so you're good.

anyone having to wait an absurdly long time for their transcript to be uploaded? good lord, the holdup is painful!

I don't think it matters if you submit without the letters. I submitted mine before getting anything in. One of mine just uploaded yesterday and the others are uploading this week. No need to wait for them.

Ahhh thank you!!

Does anyone know what happens in this circumstance? All aspects of my application are complete/uploaded except for my PEFs. I have assigned 4 people to be my recommenders/evaluators... what if only 3 of them ever submit their evaluation. 2 of my best evaluations were submitted this morning and I am expecting the next most important one to be submitted tomorrow. The 4th evaluator is very hard to get a hold of, and I am worried that their evaluation may take a while to be submitted...

I already submitted mine so I'm not 100% sure but if I remember correctly, you could choose to delete the evaluator under evaluation tab if they have not submitted the letter. That case you can still complete your PASS with 3 evaluations. Someone else can also verify this.

How long in general does it take for programs to cash out the checks after receiving them?

They cash them pretty quickly 🙂...It actually seemed to depend on the program last year. I can't remember exactly how long it took for each that I applied to. If you have concerns that a program did not receive payment, just send them an email and they'll let you know.

anyone know when most programs start emailing/calling for interviews?

Looks like June/July from previous years. No idea if COVID-19 changes it. I know that a few are for sure doing Zoom interviews.

There are 2 or 3 schools that interview first week of July, so their interviews may come out early June. UNC is one. I forget the others. Look at old Endo Application threads. All the interview dates are listed there. Most programs will start sending interviews out around mid June and later. They usually come out about a month before the interview date. First one I got was June 14 from Georgia. The rest came after that.

Good point. This sucks for you guys though. It’s important to feel out the area and also the clinic. Plus meeting the PGY-1’s and hearing their input. Doing a zoom interview and accepting a position is like buying a house unseen. Hopefully this won’t be the case for most the schools.

I’d personally give the last PEF a couple of weeks if it’s a good evaluation. However, it’s an optional PEF so it’s really your call. It’s frustrating though when they’re hard to get a hold of.

I set a deadline for 05/29 for my PEFs although I’ve contacted them months before. Besides the evaluation/LOR, there are a few boxes that they have to fill out on the PEF page. That might take a while to do.

3 of your best references will be in-> I don't know you, I don't know your application, but unless there was something earth shattering about this 4th reference (previous program director, well known name in the endodontic community) I would submit with 3. in your words they are your 3 best ones. I do believe there are a few programs that ask for 4 PEF's so it will unfortunately remove you from consideration. That said, IMO, the two most important factors granting you an interview are 1) Personal Statement 2) Class Rank. #3) would be "who you know"(your letters)... then the 4th is how early you get your application in. different programs will weigh the top 3 factors differently. these are only my opinions, but you want your application in as early as possible. don't listen to "just wait a few weeks" as there will be 5-6 programs that you've now removed yourself from consideration. if you're not applying to the programs below then you can definitely wait it out. I wouldn't. I would try to get as many interviews as possible. see below.
How long in general does it take for programs to cash out the checks after receiving them?
variable. I found a correlation between check cashed and interview invite/ rejection letter. read another way: they seem to cash your check after they have read your application and made a decision to extend an interview invite. correlation does not equal causation. but I seemed to notice a trend. maybe I made it up in my head. not all programs will email you that you've been rejected. I used the "my check got cashed" and no follow up email/phone call for 5 days following as an unofficial rejection. i'm sure there was an exception in my experience but it's just a loose correlation.
anyone know when most programs start emailing/calling for interviews?
as early as the first week of june. UNC, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, SLU and I'm sure a few others have historically contacted you very early. very early is defined by june1-june 15 for me. I got invited to one on 6/13/2019
UNC is one. I forget the others.
UNC, Minnesota, Iowa, SLU and last year Indiana liked to have the pick of the litter. these programs always seem to lead the pack. if people are not interested in these programs I would say the urgency of submitting your application early takes a few steps back.

TLDR: earlier=better

anyone else mail their ADAT scores to programs that don’t participate in PASS?

I mailed the scores to a few and they still haven’t received them... anyone else notice this holdup?

RE: late supplemental application fees- is anyone expecting their fees to arrive past any deadlines? I'm Canadian applying for Einstein (deadline June 1st), and the COVID situation is causing delays in international shipping. I emailed the program coordinator and she said it was OK for the check/money order to arrive after the deadline, but I'm considering paying $50 to ship it via Fedex/courier just in case

does one of the letters need to be from an endodontist?
is anyone having issues uploading the personal statement?

How long does it normally take for Dean's letter to be posted? I have been waiting since the day PASS has opened although I gave an early notice to who writes the letter.

should be instant once the dean's office receives the email...unfortunately this seems to be the holdup for most people, even with early warning! make sure they hit "submit" and don't just save and exit. The adea pass rep told me this happens quite often!

seems like most programs like the letter writers to be clinical faculty and hopefully one from an endodontist...but most programs have specifics outlined on their websites!

What kind of issues did you have with the PS?

I think since you’re applying to an endo residency it would help to have at least one letter from an endodontist. For the programs that I applied to I didn’t see that mentioned anywhere, but that would only help? I suppose.
