endodontic residency 2021 application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So according to this thread, 25 of the 49 total programs have already sent out interview invitations... I applied to 20 schools and 15 of them have sent invites and I haven't received any yet. Should I be getting worried, or is it still early? I guess I picked schools that interview on the early side. Do you think it would be a waste of time to submit my app to the schools that haven't invited anyone yet or is it way too late? getting nervous... last year I received a couple of interview invitations by now, this year my application is far better than last so I was expecting more excitement in my email inbox
Same here. But I only applied to 8 schools

Any luck with anymore interview invites if we still did not receive it?

Has UIC finished calling for interviews? How many batches of Interview do they have?

What is the typical turnaround time between interview and hearing about acceptance? I know that if they are not interested they might not reach out at all.

Approximately how many applicants are being called for interview in 1 batch considering there are so many Endo applicants this year? Any idea?

Usually about 7-10 for the typical program. But if you have bigger classes to fill, they'll probably invite more applicants.

Can someone pls provide data to support the fact that there were more applications this cycle?

Candidly, it’s hard to understand how application volume would increase during a global recession / pandemic. Thx.

The dental community was hit hard during the spring/early summer. Endo not as much. Some dentists took furlough time to decide on specializing. Couple that with 4th year students watching all of this unroll right before graduation and the "returning/candidates that were always wanting to do endo" results in more candidates. Increase in demand and same spots makes it more competitive. I applied to 8 programs last year and got 5 interviews. This year I applied to 6 and received 2. This year is tough. Keep your head held high and if you don't get it think of ways to make you stand out for the next cycle.

I'm just trying to figure out what was the deal with my application this year. I felt like I had a decently strong application and applied to about 30 schools and have heard absolutely nothing. Already trying to think of ways to improve things for next year now.

Volume has been increasing the past several years. The pandemic/recession probably has very little to do with application volume. Most people decided they were going to apply well before COVID-19. People didn't just suddenly decide to specialize in March and get a competitive app in by June. One program director in his email said it's the most applications they've ever seen. The same could be said last year, it'll probably be said next year. The PASS common app makes it easier to apply broadly. People are getting out of general dentistry in droves for a plethora of reasons. Endo is a good and stable specialty.

Last year UIC, Columbia and Penn all said they had more applications than they previously had. This year it was easier to apply to many more programs as travel cost and time was not a factor in the decision.
A theory: if there is normally a 10% increase in applicants every year, there are more applicants who didn't get in previously and they just get added to the next years cycle increasing the number even more.

Are you a fresh grads?
Usually for fresh grads with average stats, the only school that might give you a chance this year is probably your own dental school...

No, I've been out for four years now. I'm guessing the thing that's hurting me the most right now is my dental school doesn't have a gpa or class rank. I figure I'm going to have to take the ADAT for next year if things don't work out this time around.

I just graduated from Columbia. Last year they got much less compared to my year. Last year they got about 95 applicants

I didn’t really have much problems with getting interviews coming from pass fail school...

That's always good to know then. Does it bug program directors if you try calling after the cycle is over to see how I could improve my application for next year? Figure that might be worth a shot.

there Are lots of BS factors that are beyond your control. Some schools only/ primarily accept their own dental students so if you don’t go there, you are kind of out of luck ( Iowa, I’m looking at you). Some schools have chairs/ directors that don’t like your dental school chair/director, so they don’t want to accept you either.Anyway, assuming that you didn’t burn any bridges at your own dental school/ gpr, those 2 are usually your best bets. It is kind of unusual that with 4 years of experience and having applied to 30 programs, you didn’t get any interviews...is your school new?

idont think so but most of the time they will give you a very diplomatic feedback like John, you are a competitive candidate, you will find a program that best fit you

I went to Roseman and was part of the 2nd graduating class. But we've had lots of people get into specialties, endo included, so that's why I'm at a loss to the lack of interviews. Maybe I botches something really bad in the PASS application? Haha. Either way, things will eventually work out. It's still tough not getting bummed out about this though.

Endo is very competitive, I think it always had been at least for the last couple of years! I had to apply 4 times! I had a high rank In dental school, had research experience and did AEGD with couple years of practicing. Every school has few spots and they usually get students from their school or if you have amazing Adat score/very high GPA. Your highest chance is at the school you did you dds/aegd! Also like every field, connection plays a big role! My advice is if you really like Endo, dont give up! It might take some time but in the end, you will be doing what you like!

I know they had at least one round of interviews already, anyone know how many and if any offers have been given out?

Thanks for that advice! Unfortunately my dental school doesn't have an Endo program, so I'll just keep applying and get to know people like you said.

Make sure you attend AAE meeting, if possible do a research with publication or take ADAT exam- if you can get a good score, than I think you will be all set and def email the directors to show your interest/how to improve your application.

What’s a good ADAT score?

FYI: I spoke to I spoke to LLU admin yesterday. Seemed as though there may be additional rounds of invites. As per this forum only 1 person received an invite. How many others out there? In the past it was only 1 round with about 10 candidates. COVID has my crystal ball all off this cycle.

LOL.. too true.

Endo resident here. We all talk, directors talk. I know we went from 83-150, Iowa went to 200, A&M went to 260. So those schools all significantly increased. It’s fair to assume others did as well. No clue why the huge jump. I was told it’s students still in school or about 1 year out, and also foreign trained applicants that led to the biggest increase.

Thanks but I'm batting 2/19 so far, so nothing to brag about lol

They sent me an email today around 4pm, 30min interviews are being held 9:30am-3pm with a 1 hour lunch, so I estimate 10 applicants are going to be interviewed. For how many spots, I have no idea
