Hey guys,

I'm very lucky to have gotten into my two top med school choices and I am having a very difficult time deciding which school to choose (just got off of Stony Brooks wait list). I'm from NYS so I would get in-state tuition at Stony Brook, which would save me $50,000 overall (maybe?). I know that Georgetown is better for students who want to do surgery but I'm not sure what I want to specialize in. Does Stony Brook have a better research program? I'm from Long Island (would be ok with living there for four more years) but I was looking forward to living in a city and I really love DC. I don't know what to do :/ any feedback from current students at Stony or Georgetown would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Ummm what? Isn't Stony Brook way better than Georgetown anyway? I heard Georgetown's med program is pretty crappy

SBU has better research and I think is considered a better school. Georgetown will be at least $80K more than SBU ($40K vs $60K tuition, plus DC is more expensive) and then when the interest capitalizes at graduation it'll be at least a $93K difference.

Georgetown is not better for surgery. They just have a lot of students who have a desire to go into surgery. You'll be fine coming from SBU. What if all Georgetown students feel pressured to do surgery because of their large loans? There are so many personal things that go into specialty choice that you can't read into

You said you would be happy at SBU, it is as good if not better than GT, and it costs significantly less. Good luck with your decision!

Stony Brook is great and cheaper. Definitely won't be road block re: surgery if that's what you end up picking.
