I've gotten accepted to a few schools this year: U of Nevada SOM, U of Arizona SOM, and Oregon Health and Sciences University. Nevada is by far the cheapest at tuition coming in right around 20 grand, whereas Arizona is 43 and Oregon is 52. Oregon would be my top choice if money weren't involved, but I'm having a hard time justifying the cost of tuition as well as the cost of living there. It's ranked in the top 3 (not that it really means all that much to me). I liked Arizona a lot and it probably looks a little better on paper than Nevada does, but not for more than 20K a year. Nevada is one of the smallest med schools at about 60 students, which has its advantages and disadvantages. I know this kind of question gets brought up over and over, but advice would be appreciated. What would you do?

I would go to Nevada in your situation and save the money.

Moving to School Specific Discussions.

Nevada. You don't want to graduate with 200,000 debt under your belt.

My God man, go to Nevada. Is Oregon #3 for primary care? As I understand it, that means nothing and may even be a bad sign if you intend to go into a competitive residency.

I am guessing you are a WICHE applicant.

Are you confusing the Cost of Attendance and the tuition cost? Does OHSU charge WICHE-ers IN or OOS tuition?

OHSU Annual Tuition, Fees & Major Medical: Residents: $38,689.00
Non-Residents: $51,845.00

UA-PHX seemed pretty awesome: pass/fail grading, small class (48), a well planned curriculum, and historic classrooms with modern learning tools.

I'm a WICHE applicant but the funding hasn't been decided yet. Only 6 people from my state get the funding, so it's very competitive. If I were to get that funding I would pay IS tuition. As of right now I would be paying OOS tuition at each of these schools, but Nevada has a averaged cost of tuition program where I would pay the average of 1 yr out of state and 3 yrs in state. Yeah Phoenix was my choice when I had to decide between each of the campuses at Arizona, and had the best curriculum out of any school I interviewed at. Portland is by far my most favorite location of each of these programs, but each have some advantages (ie skiing and summer at Lake Tahoe a half hour outside of Reno).

Maybe you could ask specific questions about the schools? what criteria are you interested in for a med school?

Right now I'm thinking about going into Emergency Medicine or Internal med, but odds are I'll probably end up changing it to something else. I have each of the match lists for these schools, and there isn't a huge difference in each school putting out more highly competitive matches. Nevada actually matched 2 students into EM at Oregon, so that would be ideal. I'm not looking into any of the really competitive specialties, but I do want to match into a good program for whatever I do end up choosing. Location is important to me because I think a balance with my outdoor hobbies, but I will sacrifice that if it means getting a better education

If you're into skiing, let me just tell you that coming from Colorado (I might be a little spoiled though), the skiing in Oregon is pretty bad. A lot of slush/ or ice and not a lot of options.
