Hello,

I would appreciate it if someone would give me some insight as to which school would be preferable to attend: University of Louisville or Indiana University. I am more familiar with Louisville's campus (and am not particularly impressed, but they are in the process of constructing a new instructional building, so hopefully their facilities will improve!). I am hardly familiar with any of Indiana's campus(es), except for pictures online, so if anyone can give me some first-hand info on that, it would be greatly appreciated!

Louisville:

Pros: Nice location, a single, easy-to-navigate campus, friendly people, lower tuition, closer to home (for me), lower student-to-professor ratio, cheaper campus housing

Cons: Small classrooms...not enough seats (has an "overflow" lecture hall), seemed less organized than Indiana, current building construction, put on probation as of today (for a few reasons; see here: http://www.bizjournals.com/louisvil...he-nine-problems-that-put-u-of-l-medical.html) ...I don't know how/if this will negatively affect the incoming and current classes or not...

Indiana:

Pros: Friendly people, very research-oriented, seemed more organized than Louisville, nice location (Indianapolis, at least...I don't know about the satellite campuses)

Cons: Difficult-to-navigate campus...lots of road construction (Indianapolis), doesn't list recent match data on website, multiple campuses (with a "lottery" campus assignment system, so there's a chance of ending up at a campus you dislike), farther from home (for me), higher tuition, did not give a tour on interview day (so I don't even know what their facilities look like), higher student-to-professor ratio, more expensive campus housing

Well I don't have any first hand experience, but it depends on what your highest priorities are. For instance, if your highest priority is research, IU is ranked higher . If your highest priority is cost, then Louisville would be better. Rank your priorities and go from there.

I was curious if you came to any conclusions now that you know that you will be in Bloomington. Bloomington isn't a major city but it is home to IU and is a pretty amazing college town if you are in to that type of experience. I don't think you could go wrong with a Big Ten college town. I have lived in Bloomington for 5 years, so feel free to PM me if you have any questions about it.

Didn't UofL recently get put on probation? Regardless of what it was for that would make me nervous. Also, I don't put that much stake in the rankings, but I think 46 (IU) to 78 (UofL) is a pretty significant difference.

Thanks for your response...I am 99.99% sure that I will be going to IU! A few of my former classmates attend UofL and they say it's a wonderful school with great professors...it would also be more affordable and closer to home for me. However, their probationary status is enough to worry me, which is why I am definitely leaning towards IU. Apparently, UofL was put on probation for several reasons, the main ones being inadequate facilities and curriculum changes, both of which had already been addressed and are supposed to be taken care of by the time the class of 2018 starts. I'm still weighing my options and considering all the factors as a whole, but I have a feeling that Bloomington will be my new home 🙂
