What about yoga pants? Or are those frowned upon? I basically live in them
"Please note, athletic/”warm up” outfits includes black athletic stretch pants. Stretch pants are considered inappropriate attire and should not be worn. On the same note, leggings arenot to be worn as pants."

I'm assuming no?

No yoga pants are supposed to be worn either. It's mostly to start getting you thinking about what you'll be wearing in practice. Most vets wouldn't be wearing sweatpants or yoga pants to work so they don't want students to.

Hey waitlisters, I’m declining my seat, so hopefully someone gets my spot ASAP! ISU seems like a fantastic school and I’m bummed to let it go, but I hope you guys all have a great time!
Hey Thanks! Where have you decided to go?

@IowaStateCVM or current students,

I accepted and sent in my deposit for my seat. What is the next step for getting ready for vet school? Will there be a welcome packet sent out?

Thank you in advance! 🙂
I dropped mine off yesterday! (I'm here in Ames) Starting to get a little more real 🙂

CLASS OF 2022 INFORMATION | College of Veterinary Medicine
The above link has lots of info about things that need to happen before you start classes. But a lot of it can’t be started until May - the administration usually likes to get through graduation before they start doing things like making netIDs. So just chill out until May. 🙂

Does anyone know if ISU will send out a notification when all spots are filled? I would assume they would but I gotta make sure 😛

Also, I'd keep in mind that the reason they say you can be accepted up to a week before classes begin is because even those filled spots may open up if someone has to back out last minute. Obviously that would only apply to the top of the alternate list at that point, but still worth noting.

Hey guys, after receiving multiple OOS offers I've decided to decline my seat at ISU. I was pulled off the waitlist here, so they're already moving down it. Keep up your faith those of you still waiting to hear, and best of luck to everyone wherever they end up.

Congrats! I’m glad to know they’re moving down the waitlist!

For the people who have already been pulled from the waitlist, did it come as another message to your portal like the initial waitlist decision? I would assume it would but no ones said anything about how you’re notified :dead:

Maybe there are different versions but my alternate letter said "When a position becomes available, the next ranking alternate is notified via the message board on their status page. If you are notified of acceptance, you will be given three days to respond to the message. In order to ensure a fair process for all applicants on the alternate list, if we do not hear from you by the end of the three days, we will withdraw your application and continue to the next ranking alternate. Therefore, it is extremely important that you check your status page on a regular basis, and ensure that we have your current e-mail address."

So yes, it'll be through your portal and you'll get an email saying you have a new message.

I got that same message for my alternate letter, but my question is more of have the people who got pulled actually gotten the email that they needed to check their messages specifically because the alternate letter had said it’s important to check your status page on a regular basis. I would think if there was a message that generated the email, they wouldn’t say it’s important to check the status page specifically.

I remember someone asking Hamtaro1996 how she was notified of being pulled off the alternate list and she said she was notified by email to check her portal messages. I check both every day anyway...

Does anyone know if they will do a live video or post any info from the open house on facebook or in an email? Or is the info at open house similar to the videos they have been posting. I would like to go but I'm working a spring migration event the same day.

I can tell you that the Interim Dean video used the same PowerPoint from my open house in October 2017. I am not sure about the upcoming open house.

Our Visit Day will be very similar to the videos posted online and the Open House days in the fall. I'm not sure how much we'll be able to live stream/record that day but we'll post that if we can. If you're able to come, please register here. If you'll be in Ames at a different time, please feel free to contact [email protected] to schedule a visit!

Can someone please tell me what the deposit amount is? TIA!

Do any applicants (or current students) have a good feel for how easy it is to get shadowing experiencing in the hospital during our "free time"? Are the faculty/staff receptive, schedule ahead of time or just drop in, etc.?

In my experience, they’re very welcoming of students coming in to shadow during free time. Of course there are some situations they might tell you it’d be best for you to hang back (intense client interactions, small spaces with lots of students on the rotation, etc), but in general they try to be accommodating. I know plenty of students who drop in, especially in the large animal hospital (just wear your name tag and introduce yourself so people know you’re a student and not just a random person). But I also think it wouldn’t hurt to ask clinicians on services you’d like to shadow whether they’d prefer an email heads’ up, or just a drop in. Even if they ask you to email ahead of time, as I said they’re overall welcoming, approachable, and happy to answer questions, etc.

Hi everyone! Does Iowa offer scholarships for international experiences?

I saw on the dean’s video that students can travel with a faculty member to other countries (i.e. China, Uganda). Does the school offer financial help to cover those traveling expenses or is it fully paid by students?

From what I understand, it kind of depends on your financial situation/how you use your loans for living expenses for the year and how the trips are organized for the future.

This year the vet school was able to register the international trips as a part of "spring semester" and thus finances from spring semester (whether that be loans or scholarships, dependent on your financial situation) can be used to pay for the costs of the trip. This inclusion as a "spring semester class" also meant the trips were cheaper (maybe like $2500?), as they didn't include any fees for summer tuition. (But I also think that, if the trips weren't included as "spring semester," you could just save money from your loan for living expenses, etc. from fall/spring semester and use that instead of having to pay out of pocket for the trip).

This is the first year they were able to work them out this way, and they're hoping to do the same for the future, but they're not completely sure it will stay that way for the future (I really hope it does!). I don't think you can increase your loan amount in order the trip (maybe you could do that if it's a "summer semester" trip?), but asking Mercedes Serracin in the student affairs office could clarify this, as well as asking her about other scholarships/ways to fund international experiences (I know there was at least one for ~$1000 for this past year).

I’m not sure about the open house but I’ve been watching the ISU CVM YouTube videos which have been helpful in getting to know the school a little better!

DO we have to request to find out our waitlist spot on the 3rd or will they tell everyone their spots?

As I have read in previous years they post it on your status page. It will say rank number/total wait-listed individuals, ex. 35/200 or something of that sort.

So I went on a tour of the school yesterday and learned some good information for us alternates. The alternate list ranking is not going to include any alternates who have already been called off of the list so if you're number 20 that means you're number 20 on the list as of April 3rd.

The ranking WILL NOT BE UPDATED on your status page but we are allowed to contact them once a week to see where they are on the alternate list. If you guys don't want to bug them constantly I'll be posting the current alternate list status on this thread every tuesday.

Thank you for the information! Did they say why they weren’t posting on the status page?

You'll get your number on the list on the 3rd updated on your status page but because it is all entered in manually they don't want to update it after that for every student. Like if they call 15 people off of the waitlist on April 16th you won't see your number on the page go from 50 to 35. Sorry if I phrased it in a confusing way
