LECOM Bradenton Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It kinda sounds like I'm the only weird one who wanted to wait until the letter arrived to find out 😉 Congrats to everyone with acceptances who will be joining our class next year!

All that worrying for nothing:laugh: Congrats man!

I know, I know.........😀 Very stressful process but I am glad it is done. I am in and I look forward to finally getting to study what I went back to school for. Thank you gators21 and digitlnoize for all your advice and help. You guys have been great! 👍

Well, I sent in a LOI yesterday.... Here's to hoping I can go to FL instead of Erie!!! I would soooo much rather be in FL!

Best of luck! Are you on the wait list or are you hoping for an interview?

Just curious...for people that say they'd rather go to FL than Erie, what are your reasons other than location? Are there things about the school in Bradenton that you like better?

Is anyone else interviewing on January 6th?

Also quick question, I know the subject of the DO Letter was covered earlier, but I have a question about Science Professor Letters. I have 1/2 Science Faculty letters in, and my DO letter just got sent in. Other professors who have promised to write me the missing letter will be unable to write them until after winter break (which ends Jan 8th). Do I absolutely need the letter before my interview? Should I e-mail and ask if it is ok that the letter comes in 1-2 weeks after my interview? Any help would be awesome! 🙂

Edit: Also, in my requirements folder it says "Waiting for Grade Update" ... do I need to send in an updated Transcript?

You do not have to have the letter in beforehand, but your file will not be complete and they won't make a decision until it is

Ok! Thank you so much, I appreciate it. I was assuming that was the case, but you can't ever be too sure 🙂

I had to do it 🙄 I went and bought some anatomy flash cards to go over in my spare time until class starts. 😀 I have had zero exposure to anatomy other than EMT school which was quite basic. Also, I was curious, is there assigned or "suggested" reading that is to be completed before class starts? I do not want to be behind from the get go 😱

I'm doing the same thing...looking through an old anatomy book I ordered. In the time off I'm not in school, so I figure brushing up is probably a good idea because of the transition into classes.

Honestly, don't bother pre-studying... The common wisdom even here on SDN, a Type A-personality-heavy community, is that it's at best a waste of your time, and at worst a HUGE waste of your time.

People will differ on this. And yes, I spent my downtime at work before med school working on the Anatomy Coloring Book. Did it help? Didn't feel like it. You have to have some idea of what you're expected to know to really study well, and it's impossible to get that without being here and going through the lectures and labs. Also, you will need to spend a lot of time reading and studying no matter what your baseline is. That is, you won't be saving time by pre-studying. You will have to go over the same material you tried to read beforehand another couple of times to make it stick.

The school may send you an email eventually saying you should try to read a few chapters in one book or another before school starts, once the book list comes out (usually in late May/early June).

Anyway, to sum up, pre-studying won't improve your grades. If you're the kind of person who enjoys learning this stuff, fine; but don't push yourself too hard. The best part of medical school is the time between when you got accepted, and the first day of class. Make the most of that free time. Once you start, school has its ups and downs, and you just have to grind your way through it. Congrats to those of you who've been accepted, and good luck to everybody.

Thanks for the advice! I do not expect to know anything before I get there. I do enjoy learning about the structures and this is why after I put my kids to bed I might spend an hour or two going through the cards. I must say that it is a little hard to get out of the mind set of always feeling like I should be studying. I kind of feel like I am missing somethig. Probably driving my wife nuts not having anything to do  After taking all these pre-req's, Lets just say I am very anxious to finally study the stuf I personally find to be very interesting.🙄 I totally understand what you are saying and I am trying to give myself a break and just reeellllaaaxxxxx a bit 😀

They don't really care if you know all the structures, Liuzzi is more concerned that you know relationships. Like if you have a lesion on C5 1 cm lateral to the spinal column what are the deficits and things like that. they could ask you a bunch of things like what muscles or actions are knocked out, what nerves are involved, and things like that

I have never flown out of state before. I have an interview here, but I am not sure when I should buy plane tickets. When is the best time to buy plane tickets and plan it all out? Thanks!

Edit: Also, it it reasonable to have to pay $361 for a two way ticket to FL from CA?

Yes, that is a reasonable fare for this time of year, especially if you're flying into Bradenton. Buying sooner is usually better than later, but when is your interview?

Does anyone know the general lag time for LECOM-B to get and subsequently update the status of your LORs? 😕 Two of mine were submitted recently and the status still says not received. One was e-mailed six days ago, the other was sent via snail mail seven days ago. I know it seems impatient to be asking so soon, but I have an additional letter getting sent in the upcoming weeks and I'd love to know what time frame I'm looking at. Thank you!

The status my letters in the portal did not actually change until I received my acceptance. You may want to call Annette Shively to check and make sure they have received them, although I am sure they have received them but processing may take a little longer do to the holidays. I would check after the new year.

In February.

I have an interview the 6th! I am getting excited!!

It's my first time going to an interview out of state. I have a question regarding transportation to the interview. I am planning to fly out the day before the interview, stay in the hotel that night, and then attend the interview in the morning, and take the flight out in the evening after the interview. My question is, how do we get from the hotel to the school the morning of the interview. Do we taxi, or is there a shuttle, or something? Also, can anyone who interviewed please provide which place you stayed at and give me some advice too? Thank you!

I stayed at Country Inn (which was very nice), and some others I met stayed at the Wingate. Which is also very nice. They are close to the school, but I think pretty much everyone either rented a car, or carpooled with someone else. You can talk to the hotel and see if they'll shuttle you, but I remember talking to both, and they wouldn't 'guarantee' me that they would be able to provide me transportation to the school.

I'd go for the Wingate. Word of warning, there are occasionally cops out doing speed traps on that stretch of SR 70 between I-75 and Lakewood Ranch Blvd, so watch the speed, especially at the school zone. There's also a crossing guard car that every thinks is a cop car out daily, so there you go...but the real cops do set up there sometimes. I'd hate for an interviewee to get dinged on their way in the am.

The Econo Lodge on SR64 isn't terrible for an econo lodge. It's certainly not going to win any awards, but I stayed there the first night after I moved to Bradenton (before my house was ready), and it was find and dirt cheap.

I do wish there was a better way to coordinate car pools. It's totally worth renting a car, to me, especially if you want to check out neighborhoods and/or the city/beach while you're here, which I did, and you should.

I agree with and did all of the above, however, I was able to get the Country Inn for way less than I could get the wingate, which was the only reason I didn't stay there... 🙂

Recently got an II for LECOM-B for 2/17. If there's anyone heading there who wants to meet, split a cab/rental car, etc. let me know! Good luck!

I'd recommend renting a car -- way cheaper than a taxi. I used a taxi and ended up with a bill of about $100 bucks (to/from airport and to/from the school). I'd imagine rental cars are far cheaper. and stay at the wingate! It's nice, cheap (about 70 w/ tax a night) and fairly close to the school. Good luck!

For anyone on the waitlist, there is still hope! I was accepted on the 23rd after only a week or two on the list! Really excited to be going here, and keep up hope for those of you who are still on the list.

If you stay at the wingate, be sure to get a nice room. It's a flat ~$70 for any room. For my interview I was in a suite about the same size or larger than my home apartment. It was only a night, but it's always fun to stay in a suite. Why not when you're getting a deal like that too.

+1 for renting a car and visiting the beach. That was the most fun part of my visit.

When were you complete?

I was complete on 11/9, and got a call on 12/6 asking me if I could show up to interview on 12/9 since I lived nearby. With such short notice, on top of not having a DO letter at the time, I declined. Apparently, they were booked until March and I was told it is much more competitive come then, so the secretary said she would call me back when an earlier spot opened. So I still await...

ouch! Sorry to hear, I would keep bugging and let them know how interested if you are still interested.

I was complete 11/10. The Februrary date actually works well for me, considering the combination of taking off work/school and the distance. I'm sure if they wanted to see you in December, though... you've got a good shot!

I wouldn't worry too much about the interviewing in March. A good chunk of their slots will be filled, probably, but it doesn't make sense to extend interviews without having a few slots left. Just go in, be calm, rock the interview, and enjoy the sunshine (it'll probably still be snowing here)!

hi all, my interview at Bradenton at the end of this month, can any of you guys give me some tips as of how's the interview gonna be like? like what kind of questions will I be asked? or anything else I should be aware of? thanks~!

Congrats to all those that got off the waitlist!

I interviewed in late October, was waitlisted a few days later.
I sent in an LOI in December and my updated grades from my Master's program last week.

Really, really hoping to get off the waitlist soon....

Congrats as well to everyone who's been getting off the waitlist! Don't forget to introduce yourselves on the class thread and on the FB group. Look forward to meeting you all.

Hey, the interview wasn't bad at all. Like everyone says, it was pretty laid back. The 1x1 interview is 10-20minutes and they ask 3-5 ?s. A few of my ?s were specific to my app, such as why did I do so poorly on the MCAT the 1st 2 times lol. And what I thought of my Masters program, and most importantly (i think) was describe PBL to me. I got a little stuck on the PBL one, but really it wasn't bad. Then the group interview is laid back, just some ?s about the PBL session you sat in on, and they might pose some ethical problems and ask what you see right/wrong about it. Overall it's not bad, just try to relax and make sure you get a few words in for the group session. I think confidence is key 🙂 just not too much of it! haha. Best of luck, try not to obsess too much, just relax, review the basic ?s that are usually asked, along with reviewing your application, and you'll be fine! Good luck :luck:

Just put in a cancellation request for my interview that was scheduled on 2/10, so hopefully that opens up a spot soon. Best of luck.

I was put on the "your file will be rereviewed in 60 days" list in November. Has anyone else had a similar experience? 60 days will be up soon...heres to hoping for something good! :xf::xf:

I had a similar experience. 3 simple questions asked in this order:
Tell me about your undergrad
Tell me about your MCAT
Tell me about your research
Very friendly interviewer who pretty much tied my undergrad education and research experience into what PBL is all about (small group and independent learning). He made the connections to PBL for me after I "told him about XYZ" and said I seem to be the perfect candidate. Others in the group also said they had laid back interviews.

Individual interviews at ~9AM to get it out of the way. The group interview was ~30 minutes, quite enjoyable. We were given a scenario about a mistake in the hospital and we were the board panels. We were asked one question, given time to answer and respond to others in the group and debate until no one had further input before we were asked another question. Financial aid etc etc in the afternoon and it was a great experience overall! Good luck to you

I don't remember if I already said this or not, but my experience was about the same. Individual interview was with a really nice lady and we only did about two questions:
"gpa looks a bit low. What's that about?"
"Tell me about your life since you started college."
then she told me that she thought I might be a good fit, but I was nervous that she maybe said that to everyone...

Our group interview was about our thoughts on pro bono work. It was actually a fun discussion. Very low pressure. The entire day seemed to be mostly about finding out whether or not PBL would be a good fit for you.

Obviously I enjoyed my visit enough that when I got the acceptance I jumped on it. 😀 Best of luck to everyone who is waiting to hear back and those who have yet to interview!

Finally got my II status in the portal! For those curious about portal statuses, I was "application sent to committee for further review" for about two weeks. Just to give a timeline. Still "under review" for LECOM-E.

Same!! I have been under review at erie since November. Got interview invite here today! Excited

A question for those who have sent in a deposit. If and how was it acknowledged and when did they actually cash the check?

and a big HELLO to c/o 2016!:soexcited:

Thanks! Scheduled for this Friday... They gave me 5 day notice. My friend is interviewing on the 20th but I doubt I would be able to schedule it for then. I have a feeling there was an opening from a cancellation and so I got first available. Wasn't expecting so soon, though! Alas, the earlier I interview the earlier I will find out about acceptance/wait/reject. Can't wait!

They will acknowledge it in the portal system under your status I believe. As far as when they actually cash your check, I am not sure as I gave them a certified check from my bank which comes out when you get it from the bank. I think Mrs. Shively sends a conformation email as well but don't quote me on this.
I am definitely looking forward to starting this July!!!!👍

Thanks for the info!
Do you or anyone else know when the first day of orientation is? July 23rd or July 30th? The lady on the phone said it was July 25th for c/o 2015.
