hahaI completely agree.
May I ask where u have been invited for an interview? Just wanted to
know which schools started out early
Shadow - Seriously? Argh. I'm from Chicago, and they're ridiculously responsive with plowing and salting when ANY snow touches the ground there. I just assumed that Minnesota/Rochester would be even more adept given the extreme winters. Guess it's a good thing I can just rely on the St. Mary's-Mayo Clinic shuttle. Unless what you're saying is that the shuttle along 2nd St. isn't even reliable in the winter! 😱 For what it's worth, I heard that with the exception of last winter, the past five years or so have been really mild, so maybe they were just a bit out of practice with snow removal. Here's to hoping there will be a mild winter this year, or that the plowing is up to snuff.
please ban him for being uptight.Mods plz ban

Did all the other ones go out last tuesday?

If I remember correctly, yes, it was between tuesdays and wednesdays...
Just wasn't sure if it was every tuesday or every other. In that case, eeeeeeek! If I remember correctly, yes, it was between tuesdays and wednesdays...
Based on last week (Yay N of 1) it looks like they went out at like 2-3 am Tuesday night (or Wednesday morning) so we can probably expect another batch to go out tonight. I thought from last year's post that they met on Tuesdays so I suppose that makes sense.
Naw, they'll save the rubix cube for later in the process. Maybe you'll have to solve it while answering questions during your interview. My last name starts with an A and I didn't get the boot. I'm pretty sure I'll be knocked out of the running soon, although a part of me is holding onto some hope of getting that LOR request. I guess we'll find out after tonight. If people down the alphabet are getting rejections than there might be some truth to this theory. But I doubt we'll ever figure out there scheme. I wouldn't be surprised if there secondary in years to come will be a rubix cube sent in the mail, with a note asking you to solve it within a week and send it in to get an interview.

Soo... Anybody get the ax while we were sleeping???

So either we're all safe, or nothing went out last night. This Mayo thing feels a wee bit like Russian Roulette.![]()
Congratulations. We are still in the running toward becoming America's Next Top Mayo Student.
Nice, Tyra. 👍

So, I realize that the Mayo application process this year is a bit of a black box that's stressing everyone out with the antici...
pation, so I tried to get some details for you guys from Marcy today (hopefully I got everything right). Apparently, the current initial screening process (post-primary but pre-LOR request) is purely numbers-based, and is thus based solely on your MCAT and gpa. Also, while it could take a few weeks for the primary to work its way from AMCAS to Mayo, once Mayo receives your primary the initial screening is supposedly automated and almost immediate. The second screening step, which takes into account your entire application (minus the LORs which have not yet been requested from anyone) takes longer, and some of you should hear back in a few more weeks.
Also, Marcy mentioned today to our first year class that interviews will run from about September 8th to February 13th this year, with about 10 interviewees seen on each Monday and Friday.
For those enjoying my description of the first few weeks as a first year at Mayo, today was a blast. We got to shadow our mentor physicians again this morning (I got to shadow a fantastic pediatric radiologist; another student shadowed an orthopedic surgeon and saw both a knee and hip replacement; another student was in the OR observing a mastectomy and other breast surgeries), and then we went for a picnic and tour of the Mayo family Mayowood estate. The legacy of the Mayo family is ridiculously impressive. Yet another bout of goosebumps today and the need to pinch myself.
And now back to your regularly scheduled programming....![]()

This doesn't exactly make sense. Are you saying we are in the second screening or the first? That is, we received a letter asking for our $$- was that after the first screening? We then paid so are we now in the second screening?

We're in the second screening. If you don't pass the first one, they don't even ask you for the money (which, in a way, is really nice of them).
Phoenix--Any idea about FAP applicants? Since there's no secondary do you get an email along the lines of "we would have asked for a fee, but since yours has been waived this is to let you know that you've passed the initial screening..."?
Pheonix, you rock!! Thanks so much for demystifying it a bit. And your first week sounds amazing. You are single handedly moving Mayo up the rankings for me!

Do you know if it's specifically based on overall numbers, or if they look at trends in the numbers too? 🙂 Thanks for all your help!
Phoenix.
Reading your enthusiastic description of Mayo really makes me want to go there. I always appreciate student comments the most when looking at med schools and your posts definitely moved Mayo up on my list of where I wish I could attend. That said, I don't think I'll get in, but it's worth a shot because you never know.
Random question, but how come lots of the mods have their mod icon with a line through it?
Pretty sure from what Marcy said that it's based on overall numbers, and doesn't involve someone taking trends into consideration at this stage in the initial screening process. It sounded like an automatic/automated system. I have no idea how they do it, but my guess would be that they might use something like the LizzyM score (gpa x 10 + MCAT). Again, that's just my guess - nothing official. There could just as well be separate gpa and/or MCAT cut-offs. And I have no idea what those initial screening cut-offs might be.
Also, for those wondering about the class make-up this year, I believe that 9/50 of our class is from Minnesota.
