May I ask where u have been invited for an interview? Just wanted to
know which schools started out early

I got an invite from UTMB Galveston but I know that there's about 10 schools or so already sending out interviews. You should check out the official interview thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=544567

And for LET, yeah my last name is C. So maybe you're onto something...

Mayo's a tough school to get into so I can't say I'm too surprised by the rejection. I'm just a little bummed cause it was definitely one of my top choices...just goes to show that numbers aren't everything. Good luck to all the rest of you

Shadow - Seriously? Argh. I'm from Chicago, and they're ridiculously responsive with plowing and salting when ANY snow touches the ground there. I just assumed that Minnesota/Rochester would be even more adept given the extreme winters. Guess it's a good thing I can just rely on the St. Mary's-Mayo Clinic shuttle. Unless what you're saying is that the shuttle along 2nd St. isn't even reliable in the winter! 😱 For what it's worth, I heard that with the exception of last winter, the past five years or so have been really mild, so maybe they were just a bit out of practice with snow removal. Here's to hoping there will be a mild winter this year, or that the plowing is up to snuff.

Don't worry about the shuttles, they keep working no matter what. The problems is that the traffic was horrible even for the shuttles in 2nd st because they would not do a good job to plow the streets. Thankfully, it didn't snow every day...

I'm pretty sure Mayo doesn't have a secondary. This is the email you get after you pay the fee.

"Thank you for the fee payment. Your AMCAS application will be considered within four weeks. Please note, Mayo Medical School does not have a secondary application. When letters of recommendation are needed for your file, you will be notified via email."

Good luck all.

hey is anyone applying to mayo mstp? i know that there is a separate physician scientist forum but its dead so i was just curious if anyone knew about the timeline for mstp applicant reviews. thanks!

Did all the other ones go out last tuesday?
Posted via Mobile Device

If I remember correctly, yes, it was between tuesdays and wednesdays...

Based on last week (Yay N of 1) it looks like they went out at like 2-3 am Tuesday night (or Wednesday morning) so we can probably expect another batch to go out tonight. I thought from last year's post that they met on Tuesdays so I suppose that makes sense.

Just wasn't sure if it was every tuesday or every other. In that case, eeeeeeek!

I am all aquiver! It would be great if some peeps had gotten LOR requests though so that we had possible good news to look forward to as well as bad. 😛

So that's assuming that they meet every week... A lot of people on adcoms say that they only meet once a month during the summer, and then more frequently the deeper in the cycle you get...

Besides the people who got rejected already (sorry :-( ) didn't hear until towards the end of the month. I wouldn't stress out until you start getting to that four week point.

My last name starts with an A and I didn't get the boot. I'm pretty sure I'll be knocked out of the running soon, although a part of me is holding onto some hope of getting that LOR request. I guess we'll find out after tonight. If people down the alphabet are getting rejections than there might be some truth to this theory. But I doubt we'll ever figure out there scheme. I wouldn't be surprised if there secondary in years to come will be a rubix cube sent in the mail, with a note asking you to solve it within a week and send it in to get an interview.

Naw, they'll save the rubix cube for later in the process. Maybe you'll have to solve it while answering questions during your interview.

Sweet!...I'm all for that...I rock at solving the rubix cube....BRING IT ON!!!

Soo... Anybody get the ax while we were sleeping???

ahh scared the crap out of me opening my gmail and seeing (2). But they were both from my friends...

I don't think it can be once a month because they said we'd hear within 4 weeks and I haven't heard anything yet...if they waited another month for decisions I'd be about 6 weeks out or something like that...

So either we're all safe, or nothing went out last night. This Mayo thing feels a wee bit like Russian Roulette. :scared:

well it seems we all were spared last night/this morning. congrats to all.

i'm thinking that maybe next week or the week after we'll hear something...

CopperFrog-it's TOTALLY like russian roulette

Congratulations. We are still in the running toward becoming America's Next Top Mayo Student.

 Nice, Tyra. 👍

So, I realize that the Mayo application process this year is a bit of a black box that's stressing everyone out with the antici...

pation, so I tried to get some details for you guys from Marcy today (hopefully I got everything right). Apparently, the current initial screening process (post-primary but pre-LOR request) is purely numbers-based, and is thus based solely on your MCAT and gpa. Also, while it could take a few weeks for the primary to work its way from AMCAS to Mayo, once Mayo receives your primary the initial screening is supposedly automated and almost immediate. The second screening step, which takes into account your entire application (minus the LORs which have not yet been requested from anyone) takes longer, and some of you should hear back in a few more weeks.

Also, Marcy mentioned today to our first year class that interviews will run from about September 8th to February 13th this year, with about 10 interviewees seen on each Monday and Friday.

For those enjoying my description of the first few weeks as a first year at Mayo, today was a blast. We got to shadow our mentor physicians again this morning (I got to shadow a fantastic pediatric radiologist; another student shadowed an orthopedic surgeon and saw both a knee and hip replacement; another student was in the OR observing a mastectomy and other breast surgeries), and then we went for a picnic and tour of the Mayo family Mayowood estate. The legacy of the Mayo family is ridiculously impressive. Yet another bout of goosebumps today and the need to pinch myself.

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming.... :luck:

This doesn't exactly make sense. Are you saying we are in the second screening or the first? That is, we received a letter asking for our $$- was that after the first screening? We then paid so are we now in the second screening?

We're in the second screening. If you don't pass the first one, they don't even ask you for the money (which, in a way, is really nice of them).

Phoenix--Any idea about FAP applicants? Since there's no secondary do you get an email along the lines of "we would have asked for a fee, but since yours has been waived this is to let you know that you've passed the initial screening..."?

Pheonix, you rock!! Thanks so much for demystifying it a bit. And your first week sounds amazing. You are single handedly moving Mayo up the rankings for me!

👍 I really appreciated those schools that would do an initial screening and save applicants from spending money on schools that wouldn't even read their applications.

Well, it sounds like those that have passed the initial screen haven't received anything telling them so, so I wouldn't think that FAP applicants that pass the initial screen would either. However, I could be dead wrong since I have no idea how the FAP applications work....

Thanks, guys. Happy to help. As for how amazing Mayo is - just telling it like it is. Today we had the most phenomenal two hour Q&A session with the CEO of the Mayo Clinic about fixing the health care system.

Do you know if it's specifically based on overall numbers, or if they look at trends in the numbers too? 🙂 Thanks for all your help!

Pretty sure from what Marcy said that it's based on overall numbers, and doesn't involve someone taking trends into consideration at this stage in the initial screening process. It sounded like an automatic/automated system. I have no idea how they do it, but my guess would be that they might use something like the LizzyM score (gpa x 10 + MCAT). Again, that's just my guess - nothing official. There could just as well be separate gpa and/or MCAT cut-offs. And I have no idea what those initial screening cut-offs might be.

Also, for those wondering about the class make-up this year, I believe that 9/50 of our class is from Minnesota.

Phoenix.

Reading your enthusiastic description of Mayo really makes me want to go there. I always appreciate student comments the most when looking at med schools and your posts definitely moved Mayo up on my list of where I wish I could attend. That said, I don't think I'll get in, but it's worth a shot because you never know.

Random question, but how come lots of the mods have their mod icon with a line through it?

Its a memory band. Just like when a police officer is killed in the line of duty and the other officers put a black band on their badges. Recently one of the SDN admin's daughter was killed by a hit and run driver. If you notice all of the mods have also changed the quote under their name to say "In memory of Riley Jane". For more info, see the announcement at the very top of the forum.

But this is only to decide if they request the $85 from you right? Because some 3.8/38 people have been rejected prior to a LOR request.

Hmm... I suppose my question WAS a little too intimate with respect to their process, and thus perhaps I shouldn't have expected a direct answer, haha... Well, here's to hoping I get to the interview stage! 👍

*increases*

In may, I called Mayo and asked if they had a GPA cut off. Marcy called me back, I told her my GPA was 3.49, she said 3.49 would be high enough to pass the screen. So we know anything 3.49+ is high enough GPA-wise. She did also ask for my MCAT score though, so I can't say for sure that 3.49 is enough if your MCAT isn't high.

This I believe is the screen to be offered the opportunity to pay the fee, not for the actual interview invite. I haven't heard from Mayo after paying yet, paid on 7/13

Well my GPA is horrible and they still asked for my money....so the cutoff can't be that high

FYI I sent them a grade update so now my BCPM is around 3.3...fantastic I know 🙄

I have not heard anything but the email did state 4 weeks

4 weeks to hope and pray i guess

I want to know if it is good news but if it is bad news they could keep it a secret  and still invite me

Has anyone emailed the Mayo updates to their AMCAS application? Is it a good idea to email an update, or just wait and bring it up during an interview if you become so lucky?

If it were me, I'd send them an update whenever I was ready to send it. Just think of it as an addendum to your application. No reason to keep it to yourself until after the interview. Ideally, it would be something to help fill in a gap in your application or a great addition that would work in your favor whenever they evaluate your application (whether pre-interview or post). :luck:
