I interviewed at both. They are very, very different programs. First of all - congratulations! You have an amazing choice to make, and will succeed in either environment. I think the people at Hopkins have really tried recently to eliminate their competitive atmosphere, with P/F, and the Societies system to bring the class together. Nonetheless, they were definitely all highly type-A and driven people. Mayo is much smaller, and I felt truly collaborative - there are too many opportunities and the personalities all around the Clinic just don't foster any type of cut-throat behavior. The patient population is also very different, Baltimore has an urban population that embodies many of the issues that we still struggle with surrounding race and income inequity. Though JHU is known to be more of the ivory tower (U Maryland being the people's hospital), you will have the opportunities to serve that community if you choose (for me was a big draw). I think you'll get more individual attention at Mayo, and their philosophy is inspiring - the needs of the patient come first.
How did you feel at both places? Which felt right for fit?
(RE: cost, I feel like in this case, 10% difference is negligible.)
