I need help deciding. I'm so torn but leaning towards Mayo.. Mayo Clinic is unreal and I felt very at home there.. loved the atmosphere and the people. However I'm not crazy about the weather. In terms of financial aid, I have ~50% tuition scholarship from Mayo and ~40% from Hopkins.

What about the town? Baltimore isn't the best, and it's still cold, but there's almost certainly more to do than Rochester.

However, I think that the combination of loving the school and getting more money there makes Mayo the clear frontrunner. Happy students are the best students, and being less in debt at a place you love sounds like a winning combo to me.

Generic advice, but I'd follow the money and where you'll be happiest at the end of the day. Concerning weather, and as somebody who grew up with bad winters, I wouldn't let it deter you from the institution you said you loved - Baltimore doesn't have perfect weather either.

Both will offer all the opportunities in the world for great training and meaningful experiences and set you up to be an impactful physician. Congrats!

I picked Mayo over several schools with better weather and I am very glad I did. The winters aren't unbearable and you can get away with almost never going outside if you do it right. I'm from TX and the weather was my biggest fear, but everything here has been so worth it.

I interviewed at both. They are very, very different programs. First of all - congratulations! You have an amazing choice to make, and will succeed in either environment. I think the people at Hopkins have really tried recently to eliminate their competitive atmosphere, with P/F, and the Societies system to bring the class together. Nonetheless, they were definitely all highly type-A and driven people. Mayo is much smaller, and I felt truly collaborative - there are too many opportunities and the personalities all around the Clinic just don't foster any type of cut-throat behavior. The patient population is also very different, Baltimore has an urban population that embodies many of the issues that we still struggle with surrounding race and income inequity. Though JHU is known to be more of the ivory tower (U Maryland being the people's hospital), you will have the opportunities to serve that community if you choose (for me was a big draw). I think you'll get more individual attention at Mayo, and their philosophy is inspiring - the needs of the patient come first.

How did you feel at both places? Which felt right for fit?

(RE: cost, I feel like in this case, 10% difference is negligible.)

I've been a few years out from college, and am continuously realizing that the people I was surrounded by, were the most valuable thing I "received." Financially, the 40%/50% is not a huge difference, so focus on your gut feeling.

Think about at which school you preferred the students, faculty, and administration - this will impact your wellbeing and motivation to succeed. Is one closer to home, and is that a factor you value? (I had a friend who narrowed down 2 stellar options by picking the instate over cross-country option, that was impt to her).

And at the end of the day, know that you cannot go wrong with either school! My friend always says, "Make a decision, and don't look back!"
