Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2016-2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not particularly interested in doing research, but I could see myself getting into it if there's a cool opportunity or something. Could anyone comment on the research opportunities at MSUCOM? Should've asked on interview day...lol
I wasn't interested in research but I would say EL is the best for it.

We are slowly being introduced to opportunities but research seems to be something you have to seek out and set up on your own and not many people I know seem to do it at MSUCOM. It may be different in EL like I said but that is my experience as a DMC student.

Anyone know if they are still planning on sending II's?

No update letters this year... so hard to tell how many spots (Canadian) are still left..

You would be better off calling/emailing the admissions office as they would know more accurate details such as this. You can also schedule an appointment with an admissions counselor

I emailed admissions, they just copy/pasted the text from the application complete email (reviewing until mid-spring).

I wouldn't expect much more in the way of invites for this year, unfortunately. Though it's possible there may be more invites going out, I believe the last scheduled interviews are only a few weeks away.

How much time in advance do they typically send out the II? Say they have an interview date on Feb 15, would sending out an invite on feb 5 be something they would do?

Meh.. completed secondary late due to personal reasons (grandma passed away). But, I'm a Canadian applicant so I hope they still have some room!

I'm not exactly sure, but I believe that the latest invitations last year were in the first couple weeks of January. It would have been a couple weeks before the late January day and perhaps six to seven weeks before the March day (the last two dates we had).

Sorry to hear it... hopefully you get some good news on the application side of things. 🙂 If you don't hear back, just try your best to apply early next year.

@PKU honestly I would brace for applying next season. Get your entire app in EARLY JUNE. Submit the secondary within 10 days of receiving it (no matter the school). Those increase your odds. Applying late is very risky and I understand that you had extenuating circumstances but you still submitted your primary late. To put this in perspective, I had my complete file (primary and secondary) submitted by mid July and received an II in November and I am IS.
I truly hope you do get an II. Best of luck bud

Is anyone here interviewing 2/2 AM? I wish someone would post some tips on this MMI (i know it's against the rules, but still, a girl can dream).

As someone who was anxious and nervous prior to my interview... trust me, it's so much easier than you think! Just smile, and smile a lot.

Coming from someone who smiles when they are nervous, I think I just might be able to utilize your advice. Thanks! hah

II Invitation just now!! There is still hope for those that have not heard yet.... interviews are being scheduled into the end of March
Gives me some hope!

Anyone know if they've sent pre-II rejections out yet?

Are there any out of staters here who have been accepted? Any NY people?

Guys, is the deadline to order orientation materials tomorrow or Feb. 28th? The orientation email says the 28th but the admissions office told me the 1st LOL

I had to look up what you were talking about. Oh boy, I hope it's the 28th because that's what it says when we visit the class link!

Since you were just accepted you probably haven't gotten the orientation materials email yet

I emailed the woman on the email, and she said it's due the 1st but "we are accepting orders until the 28th". I personally am waiting until the 28th because it sounded fine from what she said!

Anyone happen to know if you can get a refund on the orientation materials if you end up not matriculating at MSUCOM?

Any Canadians interviewing tomorrow? Just can't seem to fall asleep >.>

Happy birthday @femmegoblue :hardy: I had a wonderful experience here today for my interview. MSUCOM is big on supporting it's students with any of their needs (academic and mental health). They truly want everyone to succeed. Definably got that "community" vibe from them too, that everyone in their class is close. The faculty we met were also super sweet. It's going to be a long 30 day wait!

Interesting, I also interviewed today and this was my biggest area of concern for MSU after leaving. The student that gave us a tour said that only 20-30 students show up to lectures because they're all streamed online and that every time they have a lab or test he's seeing new faces. All in all, there were five first-year students we had at our student panel and three of them hadn't met/known any of the others prior to this day. I'm sure there are tight knit groups at EL but the class as a whole seems disjointed.

With that being said, I think the Detroit campus is a really tight knit group but it's way easier for them since the class size is a lot smaller. MSU was my top choice but it's a hard decision knowing that getting in the Detroit campus is a stretch at this point.

It's what you make of it. If you want to be closer knit, go to class for sure! Remember the class is 250~ people. I am there to get an education first and I still am not worried with meeting 4-5 lifelong friends along the way. I get what you're saying though. It's just the nature of 250 people in a class. The more you participate the closer you will feel.

Had an excellent interview experience on Thursday too! I was Tier 3 WLed last year, but I also heard this school does like reapplicants who show interest.

Hope it works out for the best
